    The S282 is modelled after a USATC S200 locomotive that served on the European, north African and middle East theaters of WWII. The S060 is modelled after a USATC S100 tank shunter that served about the same theaters of WWII.

    That deck plate story gave me the hebee jebees. Not rail related but did 40 years as a truck driver everything from vans and cube trucks to box trucks just under CDL required. Boss needed some new vans to replace a crapped out van but this was 08 when the auto industry was having issues and there was a year long waiting list for new so boss purchases a surplus Penske rental van cab with a cargo box. Driving a local expressway during the winter of 14 I noticed a wicked draft as I'm driving and in trying to locate the source of the draft move my hand along the bulkhead that's actually the front wall of the box and feel this gap wide enough to get my hand between the cab roof and bulkhead. Pull my hand back as I needed to flip on the turn signal for an off ramp. No sooner did I pull my hand clear there was a bang and the gap closed. Seems a combination of speed on the expressway with particularly strong gusts of wind opposite direction of traffic and the wind eased up enough to close the gap my hand had been in seconds before as the gap wasn't there any more.
    As to alcohol burning locomotives I suppose theoretically one of the UP turbines could have used alcohol as pretty much as long as it's flammable a turbine can use it for fuel but as noted it's not exactly the most energy packed fuel.

      @LogicalNiko Před 8 měsíci +10

      It was tried in Europe in the 1880-1920 era. Schneider-Creusot made a Naphthalene engine in 1913. And records indicate that at that time engines had been made using Ethanol, Benzene, Toluene, standard Gasoline, and wood gas. They were pretty much trying to see if they could viably make a reliable fuel from any additional refining of Coal Tar or fractional distillation byproducts of crude oil (especially heavy crude if possible as coal tar and crude were cheap and widely available)
      It was clearly the “Does it burn? If so try to chuck it in a steam locomotive” era of engineering.

      @Mr.crisskombat Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@Mr.crisskombat Yeah I think the United States never had the same resource shortages until after the age of steam was over. The US had way too much good quality coal production to ever make it necessary to look at alternatives. A lot of European countries had to import it all, which obviously puts some pressure to look at alternatives.

    The "slosh" effect is not exaggerated (at least not intentionally). I can't rule out bugs but from everything I can tell the amount of movement at the S282 backhead is realistic given the geometry of the boiler (long and narrow) and a severity of the grade changes on the DVRT trackage. Note that the trackside grade signs indicate *average* grade over a segment, and momentary grades can be significantly different from the indicated average.
    Yes, blower, air compressor, and dynamo all consume steam. So does the steam-driven bell ringer, in miniscule amounts.
    Yes, the S282 has blind drivers in DV.

But it might be so second nature *in this context* now that it might be hard to do otherwise =P (Emphasising the context before someone gets 'funny' ideas about how operations are on the CRM which I'll immediately presume to be 100 % professional without ever having been there).
      To be perfectly honest, it might not be the most entertaining topic in and out of itself, but I'm positively certain you'd make it worthwhile by putting technical and operational knowledge in, garnished with some anecdotes.
      This being said, a sandbox thing where you could run trains along several other people, a bit as in a certain game with "schlechter Code" but with a serious CTC/dispatching aspect to it would really be nice to see. I guess it'd bring some stories and info out that didn't have much impact on your content yet - but let's not forget you do have professional background from the whole railway signalling topic, too. And from what little I know about railroading vs. railway operations, there's even more "you do WHAT across the pond?!"-material in this range than what we already have just by looking on *one* train doing rounds.

    Fun fact: the Nickle Plate Berkshires were built with screw reversers, but 765 and I believe 763 were retrofitted with Johnson bars for local work.

    • @LogicalNiko
      @LogicalNiko Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yeah Johnson bars were also banned after awhile as being to dangerous after 1939. They were allowed for yard switching work, light duty, and historic restorations only after that. When steam locomotives started getting massive in size the linkage to the Johnson bar could just be forced by steam pressure from full open to full locked position, which both causes bad things for the locomotive but also with enough force through a large steel bar to kill a person standing at the controls. Having a screw wouldn't allow the force to be transmitted into rotational torque...although it made it a lot more work to go back and forth in a yard.

    no they did not run alcohol fired steam locomotives, but they ran naphtha fired locomotives where the naphtha was the fuel for burring, also the stuff that was boiled into naphtha vapor, it was also the lubricating liquid. so if a there was a leak anywhere then you would end up in a ball of fire. those engines were mostly found on small launch type boats. the worst thing ever made was the caustic soda locomotive's which the locomotives were fireless and used caustic soda to create heat. here's a link to the Wikipedia page about them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soda_locomotive

    I'm not sure how this would go, but... How many DE2s does it take to match the S282 for tonnage?
    Why do I ask? Because I think it might be funny to plot out a job/trip where Hyce has to put water in the S282 at least once, while kAN gets to run a relatively "simple" MU DE2 snake as the power unit.
    Of course, that means he has a lot of engines to worry about, and more chances for the "blue flash of doom" when the DE2s get angry and start popping TM breakers, but on the flipside, he has less to worry about regarding water, coal, driving the train, and trying to align switches.
    On the other hand, Hyce has the speed advantage initially, but will have to plan a refueling stop at some point. He has the more troublesome locomotive to keep running, but has the experience to run it, while kAN has the more simplistic locomotive-set to do the job, but also gets somewhat bit by "If one blows up, you have to decide if it's worth resetting to fix the problem, but now you're stopped dead, or run back and attempt to toggle the "dead" unit's TM breaker to keep going.
    ---
    An alternate idea is to have Hyce in the S060 and kAN in the DM3, both hauling something nice and heavy out of the Harbor.

    I mean grain alcohol is just purified ethanol. So it’s fine to drink if diluted. The danger is if they either added chemicals or it’s methanol. Ethanol for fuel or industrial purposes is often intentionally mixed with methanol or Pyridine. Either or Both will make it extremely toxic. The only exception is if this is lab grade ethanol. Then it’s probably pure.
    And just because it’s in a tank car doesn’t mean it’s not a food safe tank car. Corn syrup, molasses, etc are commonly shipped in tank cars.

    I would think most any locomotive built post 1900 would have lateral motion devices on the drive axles to negate most of the need of blind driver save some 5 axle drivers or the UP 4-12-2. I would imagine 491 was new enough to incorporate lateral motion in the running gear.

    The small model steam engines burn alcohol. So technically, yes... But economically on the big railroad, doubtful.

    The way you described it, you are saying that the cylinders alone are the engine when it's not, the whole locomotive is the engine

    • @WhitzWolf92
      @WhitzWolf92 Před 8 měsíci

      It kind of is, depending on how you use the terminology. Technically, the cylinders alone are the steam engine of the locomotive. But the latter is often colloquially called an engine, too.

    38:20 ish - "why didn't it couple" you hooked the chain in, but didn't tighten it. Probably that's the game's reaction to that. However, that being said - that's not how it works in real life. Initially it would work, though terribly. You can pull the cars, but every change in the train forces, especially transitioning between tension and pressure (which is done way more often and without a second thought in chain-and-buffer-land due to being an absolute non-issue) will result in major jerks with the cars running into each other. This can result in damage (because the same impulse over the same way is transferred in a much shorter time than usually), but the most probable result will be the chain jumping out of the hook on one of those occasions, resulting in a train split.
    I've had a shunter not tightening the coupler once. We had removed a car from the consist due to flat spots, somewhere close to what would later be the front of the train (it was a push-pull consist). When shunting to the platform, I didn't notice it; no big forces and changes, I was on the heavy locomotive while it was only two or three cars bumping (slightly; as I said, no big forces) at the end. But after changing to the control car, oh by the gods was that awful. At first, I thought it was just too much slack in several couplings, so I switched to sort of what you would call proper train handling in knuckle-coupler-land. Then my conductor or one of the train guards rang me up and said there was a slight gap appearing between the cars while decreasing acceleration or engine braking. We still interpreted that as way too much slack and decided to calmly pull into the next station and couple up correctly there. You can imagine it was quite horrifying to then find out what actually had happend with the chain fully long … That one report did absolutely go the whole effing official way.
    Actually there is a situation where you do move vehicles with long couplers: On hump yards. When the cut of cars is prepared for humping, the chains on the intended separation spots are elongated before the cut is pushed to the hump. On the hump, a humping shunter has a long stick and lifts the chain out of the hook. Knuckle couplers are way easier and probably safer in that situation, obviously.
