      David says, that was the original intention!
      But (as often happens) in his enthusiastic desire to try to help everyone as much as he can, he got a little distracted.... and the duration turned out to be "a bit" longer and more detailed, then he was at first thinking about. 😋
      Throw in his Irish "gift of the gab", a selection of what he regards as being really important plant facts, some lovely, beautifully grown plants.... and as you've noted, it turned out to be longer than planned.

Thanks for all you do!!

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thanks for your kind sentiments.
      Getting color on your panicle hydrangeas depends upon two main factors:
      1/ The variety and its genetic make up (some just go from white to various shades of beige and brown, no matter what you do).
      2/ Cool summer night time temperatures (ideally temps under 70 degrees).
      You are outside of our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ so we would defer to others with more local experience, but we know that in areas with intense sunlight and hot, humid nights, getting them into a spot where the flowers receive a little relief shade from the sizzling, hot afternoon sun will help to keep the flowers cooler and prevent them from "frying" in the intense sunlight.
      Also, keeping the plants from getting too dry at their roots (incorporating humus in the planting hole, mulching, watering etc.,) will help to give you a better chance too.
      We notice (in our trials) that the age of the plants seems to matter too, probably because older, well established plants have a stronger root system and are able to extract moisture from the earth, when they need it most.
      In our region, we definitely see a big difference between how the trial plants in our nursery in S. New Jersey perform compared to those in more northern, cooler night locations like OH, PA, W.VA, Upstate NY, New England etc. They get way better color!
      Have you viewed our video (also on this channel) entitled "Complete Guide To Enjoying Panicle Hydrangeas": czcams.com/video/jLqmDOMPQJs/video.html, in this video David explains more about the things we've detailed above, and also goes on to explain how we give our plants a second trim to delay flowering until later in the Fall, when we get cooler nights and therefore consistent pink color. 😉👏
      This might be something you could experiment with.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi David,..another great and very informative video. IMOO, I think you have left one of the most popular and favoured tree-form hydrangeas off your list from which, likely, the parentage of some of those you showed originated from - that being Vanilla Strawberry ‘Renhy’ - which has been my “go to” for years in light of its flower’s annual colour transition from white to pink to burgundy. For comparison purposes how do you compare the stem strength of VS to that of the new and soon to-be-released ‘Worry-Free’ cultivar?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thanks, and nice to hear from you again.
      We grow both Hydrangea Vanilla Strawberry and Strawberry Sundae: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sf_s=Hydrangea%20Strawberry as part of our First Editions offering, varieties that can be found at many of our partnering garden center locations: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/.
      We have them in our trial areas, and if you haven't already viewed it, David has posted a video on Strawberry Sundae (also on this channel): czcams.com/video/Tfwz8o8HSq4/video.html that will explain what we think of it and Mr. Jean Renault's breeding.
      As this video explains Mr. Renault (a retried nurseryman) in North Western France started breeding Hydrangea paniculatas in the 1970's.
      25K seedlings and 20-25 years later, he discovered a genetic trait that led to the beautiful pink coloring you mention. Vanilla Strawberry was introduced first, followed by Strawberry Sundae which is a little stiffer in its arching habit. Both are very popular (especially in northern areas areas with cool summer nights).
      For comparison sake, you should tune in for an upcoming video David is working on that will explain much more about Love-a-lot Pink. Essentially, if you are getting good color on Vanilla Strawberry, you are going to really like WorryFree® Love-a-Lot Pink😉👏👍😊
      It will be shorter, much stockier, more upright with larger, more densely packed florets and will probably color up much deeper too - all the way from white to pink and for you (with your cooler nights) into deep shades of red 😁👏.
      Selected from a field of over 10,000 seedlings, and extensively tested by us - it is simply outstanding.
      But, you have to find that out for yourself!
      So stay tuned, watch for David's video (which he is working on), and then when you get it going, and had time to enjoy and evaluate it, let us know....
      We think you are going to LOVE 😍.... WorryFree® Love-a-Lot Pink.

      Thanks for your nice comment and for reaching out to us about a potential source for the tree form of Hydrangea Love a Lot Pink. It is a super new selection and may not yet be on everyone's radar.
      In time (no doubt), it will be become more widely stocked but in the meantime you might have to ask around a little.
      In looking at a map it appears Russell’s Garden Center, Lovell’s Nursery, and Briggs would be the closest places to Upton. This link will help you find the locations of the partnering garden centers that stock our plants:grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/
      If some places do not actually have it in stock, then perhaps if you ask the buyers nicely, they may be able to get some in for you.

    Hi David - I recently bought a standard limelight hydrangea- we had a week of tremendous rain & now the blooms are turning black & rotting - any ideas of what to do ?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 10 dny +1

      We got the rain too, and for us, it was very welcome!
      Its not unusual for some selections of panicle hydrangeas to discolor as the flowers age, especially when we get hot, humid nights.
      Once this happens there isn't much you can do, except just snip off (remove) the ones that look unsightly.
      If you've been watching any of our other videos here on this channel, you might have come across some that feature our trials and testing. This is where we carefully evaluate and select the ones that hold, and sometimes change their colors to pink and red as they mature. So if you have the space (and the inclination), you might want to research them and then visit some of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ because that's where you are likely to find lots more information on these sorts.
      So, when time allows, can we suggest that you search and scroll through some of David's many videos, on these wonderful types of hydrangeas, here on this channel.
      We hope this helps.

    I have tickseed how do I split it when it’s huge and blooming . I have a plant I need identifying but I can’t upload photos here.

      Thanks for your question.
      Coreopsis (Tickseed) can be divided in Autumn or Early Spring when the top growth is dormant or going dormant in late Autumn.
      Here's link to one of David's videos where explains how to divide Coral Bells (Heucheras): czcams.com/video/9NLlarfmsxM/video.html. The timing, technique and process is similar.
      Also, if you are trying to identify plants, the Plant Search on our website would be a good resource for trying to identify the plants you have in your garden.

    I need to find a place for a hydrangea, but my yard is mostly shade or part shade. I there a hydrangea that likes part shade?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 11 měsíci +2

      The last one featured Love-a-Lot Pink, would be a great candidate for your partially shaded site. We know of a couple of sites where it is growing in partial shade and we've been impressed by the deep pink / light red color that it turns in Autumn in these conditions. Its a trade off, the plants will be stockier and more compact in full sun, but if we get searing hot sun and sustained dry periods in mid-summer (especially in the more southern parts of our region), the florets can get blemished and take on premature browning shades. Whereas in shadier spots, they are likely to be a little taller and maybe a bit more open in habit, but with the protection of afternoon shade the flowers will gradually turn glorious shades of pink and even pass through to reds (like one shot in this video shows). This is especially good in northern parts of our region where they get more cool summer nights.
      Because this selection is so stocky and sturdy, it will cope with the lower light conditions better than say some of the older, thinner stemmed sorts.
