    Thank you so much, David, for all this information. I have a gorgeous planted panicle hydrangea tree. Every year it blooms abundantly and then flops after a heavy rain. I’ll try the July Trim and cut back on fertilizer. Appreciate the overview of different varieties as well. I learn so much from your videos about different plants and how to care for them! Keep them coming!

      Thank you, that's great to hear. When you try it, don't forget to let us all know the outcome!
      When we all pool our information..... we all learn.
      One point to bear in mind, I used the 4th of July as an easy to remember cut off date! If your plant is one of the older, later flowering varieties and you live in a more northerly location with a shorter growing season, you probably ought to do the second prune a bit earlier (maybe 3rd week of June). That way, it will have a bit more time to grow out and form the new flower buds. BTW, if you don't mind, it would be wonderful, if you could kindly click the "like" icon on any of our videos that you deem worthy, because that will help other people find the information too. Thanks again for your lovely appreciative compliments.

      Hi David my 2 year old limelight hydrangeas is blooming heavily but because of so much rain, they’re flopping. I tried to tie a rope around them and secured them to the fence. Now I’m going to try cutting them again on July 4 to make them stronger. I live here in Sayreville nj so we are on the same zone. Also last year they went from chartreuse to white then to brown and not pinkish. You mentioned about not getting enough cold . I’m wondering, did yours do the same? If not, how can I make them turn pinkish as they aged? Thank you. I’m always learning something from your channel.

      Thank you, that's great to hear. We sometimes get comments from pundits about them being too long in duration. But, we take the view that its better to try to give as much good practical information as we can in one place, so if any viewers want to watch them in at different stages and then go back and review them again at different times, then at least the content is there. We are not looking to produce catchy, glitzy videos that are designed to generate high numbers of views and click through rates, rather just good down to earth, straight forward information that people can refer to, when and as they want. So, if that takes a little longer to explain, then that's the way it is. Thanks again for taking the trouble to let us know, it is appreciated.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Thanks, it's really amazing how well some plants can cope with oppressively hot and humid conditions. And ones that have cooling white and blue shades help to create the illusion of a few degrees cooler. We know how superbly well these panicle hydrangeas do here in our our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ and while we are not that well acquainted with your Texas conditions, we suspect that because they are so resilient and easy to grow, maybe it might be worth taking a look around your area, because maybe (just maybe) you'll come across some that are doing OK and therefore are worth trying. Especially of you take "a leaf out of our book" and prune them a second time to get them to flower later in the Fall when perhaps the temperatures are cooler and more forgiving. If you want to re-visit this, and learn more about this technique, then at the 11 minute in this video, you can catch David showing you how we do this to get some of our plants to miss the worst of the hottest summer weather.

    Absolutely gorgeous! I LOVE hydrangeas! I don’t have any "conical" ones. My blooms are completely round on one kind….the others have a flat bloom. Bloom seems to have almost like seeds in the center, then small blooms all around. I have a few tiny shrubs starting. I buried a branch last year. This Spring, it rooted, so I planted it in another garden. I assume, you’re telling us not to prune them in the Fall? I have so much foliage, but blooms are sparse! Other years, the dead wood stood tall, then blossoms fills up. However, this year, not many blooms. Mostly leaves…?

    I’ve been wanting two Oakleaf Hydrangea Harmony for years. Nobody carries them locally. I’ve got my eye on two finally for next year. I’m hoping. But Harmony is, what I’m told, an older variety. Popular at older Southern homes. A local nursery man was a little insulting when I asked about whether they carried that variety. He told me “hell no, I don’t want that damn plant”. Not sure what that was all about but I thanked him and haven’t been back over twenty years now. I love the mutton head blossoms. They are huge and brilliant. Love how you say flower. Loved your video and I will be watching for more.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +2

      Oakleaved Hydrangeas are really beautiful and we have trialed lots of selections over the years. Harmony is sometimes disparaged because it tends to be floppy as a young plant with flowers that hang down and trail on the ground, which is why (perhaps) that is why it has fallen out of favor. It stiffens up later in life, and it is nice that some enthusiasts are trying to keep heirloom varieties going. Plant Heritage in the UK is doing some sterling work in preserving (and reintroducing) some that are in danger of being lost to cultivation, and we are always on the look out for "hidden or overlooked gems" so stay tuned, because you'd never know what we might be coming up with in future! Often the old "tried and true" are really good plants that deserve to be appreciated and admired again.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +3

      Its the hot, humid summer night temperatures (above 70 degrees), drought stress and intense mid-day summer sun that is causing them to turn brown. When you revisit this video listen in to the part where I describe how we trim our plants a second time. In this area we do this around mid or end of June (certainly by the 4th of July), this sets the flowering date back to late summer/ early Fall when the night temperatures are cooler and that's how we get longer lasting blooms and often glorious pink shading. Just bear in mind that the eventual flowering dates and coloring intensity depends also on the variety.

      In your intense sunshine, they will probably do better with a little shade - especially in the mid afternoon. My guidance is based on our trials and experiences here in Eastern North America, but the same basic principals, organic matter incorporated in soil, supplemental watering, mulching etc.
      Keep in touch with your local garden centers, because if they look like they are going to be a success in your area, they are likely to begin stocking them. Try if you can, to find some places that are conducting trials. That way, you'll be able to source the best performers and get the scoop on what to do, to get the best results.

Question - I am pretty sure I have a Pinky Winky tree hydrangea in my front yard - which doesn’t really get too much sun. You certainly could consider, lifting it and "giving it a ride in a wheel barrow" to a new sunnier site. And to do that, a good hard prune like David describes in his videos would be helpful too. Normally they transplant well....., just try to lift it with a good sized rootball, and transplant it with plenty of organic matter mixed into a generous sized hole (like David describes in this video: czcams.com/video/xybT3obydPw/video.html then be sure to mulch and water it well until it gets stablished.

      Thanks for your kind comments, it is nice to know you are enjoying our efforts.
      Trimming your Annabelles will delay the flowering date (just like it does with the panicles), it has the added advantage of making them bushier and probably less floppy too.
      But some of this depends upon where you live and the length of your growing season, so we would advise doing some experiments with a plant or two, just to make sure it works in your area.
      It would also be worth experimenting with removal of fading flowerheads to (dead-heading) because there's a chance you might get some light rebloom of some of the newer H. arborescens selections - again it depends on your location, the length of the growing season and weather in Fall, but it might be worth tinkering with....

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thanks, it is good to hear you are finding our efforts helpful.
      You can trim them back almost as short as you want to (it won't harm the plant). They will make new bushy shoots but depending upon the variety, just know that they are unlikely to flower again this year.
      Some varieties have heavy heads and thin stems and are "floppier" than others (that's one of things we look for when we are selecting new ones, we only pick the ones with sturdy stems that are less likely to flop over).
      Unfortunately some will bend over no matter what you do, but if you care to watch the video again, you will see David demonstrate (at the 11.25 mark), that it is possible to give them a second trim earlier in the season that should help you create shorter bushier growth.

Phantom is a larger growing selection that is now in our opinion superseded by better more floriferous and more compact growing ones (which is why we didn't include it). It was introduced over 30 years ago (in 1990) and at that time was notable for its big flowers.
      Recent achievements in breeding have resulted in selections that are bushier, with wonderful free flowering abilities, sturdy stems and some even change color as the flowers mature.

      Thank you. Your observation and comment is appreciated. This one is still under evaluation, it is a lovely selection and is impressive, but the criteria is so high that many are surpassed when bushy, stocky non-flopping habit, duration of flowering, late and after season effect and other factors are taken into consideration.

      @@OverdevestNurseries Yes, much to consider when it comes to plant breeding. I grow 'Little Lamb', it is very hardy in my far north location and blooms earlier than most of the fuller paniculata types, though it has one drawback, the blooms do not have a great deal of substances and brown and dry up when others are still going strong, I think the variety would be rejected if it were to be under trial today.

    David, another great and helpful video. Does cutting back the plant in late June/early July tend to produce more flowers than if one just lets the plant ‘run its natural seasonal course’ - ie: are more flower buds set? and will the flower stems be stronger so as to reduce possible flopping because they may be, overall, shorter?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +5

      Yes, it does help to make the plants shorter and bushier, with smaller and often more flowers, but really the reason we do it is to delay the flowering to extend the display season and get better pink and red coloring.

      Depends on when they were planted, soil and weather conditions etc. but it usually takes about 8-10 weeks for them to build a good root system in their new plant position. Even then, I don't consider them fully established until they pass through a complete growing cycle. You won't be able to see what going on under the ground, but once they become established you'll be able to see strong new growth coming out for the buds and a sturdy look tot he plant. Until then, keep up the TLC!

      There's usually plenty of adequate moisture in the soil at that time of year, so we do not have to water them.
      Obviously, if you are growing them in containers and over-wintering indoors where they are not exposed to rainfall, then they will need occasional watering. Its a matter of keeping them moist enough to survive but not soaking wet.

      Pretty sure that will be too late in zone 3. As David has mentioned in other comments, in zones with shorter growing seasons it's recommended you prune a few weeks earlier, sometime in June. I don't know if it's entirely necessary in zone 3 though, as we already have later flowering than higher zones, and our first frost date is earlier as well.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +1

      Thank you Aquafish. I agree, in your shorter season you may not have to do a second trim at all. Cooler nights in colder zones usually results in them naturally turning color. Of course it depends upon the variety. If you do decide to try a second trim - you will have to do it earlier (perhaps early or mid June at the latest). I used "by the 4th of July" as a guide for this region because it is easy to remember, but with shorter growing seasons that would have to be adjusted.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +2

      Absolutely, it should work well for you. Only bear in mind, that you should probably try it earlier than the 4th of July (i.e. mid to end of June). I used the 4th of July because that's a date that is easy to remember, but the trick is to leave enough time for the new growth to grow out and set flower bud before frost. Also, some varieties are earlier flowering and more responsive than others, so if you have more than one plant, try a little experimentation on one plant first and then tweak it according to whatever works best.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +1

      The parts of the plants that are above soil level are very hardy, and will have no issues. But, the roots in a pot (which are normally insulated under the ground in a garden) are vulnerable to freezing solid when surrounded with cold conditions in a pot.
      So they will grow well in a large pots, but the pot should be protected in a sheltered spot and wrapped with insulation or brought into garage or basement etc.

I have clay soil and I think I maybe over watering because I recently checked the soil with a meter and it read wet after not having watered in over a week. My leaves are green and healthy but blooms are partially brown. Second season in grown. My question is should I dig up in the fall and create some sort of burm? Or should I leave alone and just not water next year?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +2

      The browning on the flowers is caused by hot, humid night temperatures and sun intensity. If it's any consolation, it happens to our plants too. That's why I talk in this video about trimming them a second time, in late June (certainly before the 4th of July). The browning is accelerated in prolonged dry periods, so some supplemental watering will help to prolong the display. You are wise to be careful about not overwatering but its the night temperatures and not the watering that is causing the discoloration. By trimming them a second time, you are delaying the flowering time, so that then when they do flower, it is later in late summer and Fall, when the night temperatures are more likely to be less than 70 degrees.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před rokem +2

      This is something we've been working on for years. The reason we do it is to delay the flowering to extend the display season and get better pink and red coloring in the cool weather of Autumn. The important thing is to leave enough time for the plants to grow out and set new flower buds. So, while I mention the 4th of July (because it is an easy date for everyone to remember), really it works better for us if it is carried out by the end of June. Exact timing depends upon where you are located and the variety.... The further north you are located the shorter the season - so you would probably need to do it earlier. For us, the end of June works best on early flowering types, later flowering ones will need earlier pruning dates.

      They are terrific (really beautiful) plants for growing in pots and planters. Just be aware that in colder districts the pots will probably have to be moved to a sheltered location (or into a garage or basement) during the worst of the winter.
      The tops of the plants are very hardy, but the fleshy roots (which are normally insulated under the ground in a landscape setting) may freeze solid and be damaged, when the elevated and smaller soil volume of n a pot or planter are surrounded by cold conditions.

      Thank you Aquafish. Generally they don't need much pruning, but old, overgrown specimens can be tidied up and reinvigorated by pruning just after flowering (just as the flowers begin to fade), that then leaves enough time to for the new growth to grow out and set buds that will over-winter and bloom the following year.
