Was Ozzy Osbourne Lip-Syncing?!

- Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi played a surprise show at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games this year. This is the first time Ozzy has been performed since his recent surgery in June. A few people have said his is lip-syncing in it, but is this true?! If it is, does it even matter? If you go to see Ozzy and Black Sabbath live, would you mind if his miming or not?

Justin, I have noticed in your last few videos that your mic cable does not go through the holder perfectly anymore. Hope everything is ok :D Keep the great videos coming!
Who would pay YOU?
Hey, Justin, you are the honest guy, thats right, thats not the Ozzman. He is just in recovery and now he is standing on a Trampoline. That hurts to an really Fan. This is a scary act and i wos angry that Ozzy is falling. He's not agility. Surgery wos on June 2022. Oh, OZZY, your such a great musician but this show is very sad. I love you so much and my heart goes to your recovery. Get well. Justin is the honesty guy on this planet with respect and feeling. Thanks for streaming. 👍🙏👌👏😍💓

P.S. - science has validated that Tony Iommi still has more great riffs stuck in his moustache than most bands will ever have in their entire careers. #fact
Even when he was clean shaved in the 1970s. Lol
the math checks out
He can play both left handed and right handed, he learned to play left handed after he lost his fingertips on his right hand in a factory accident, he played right handed again (like he is here) after he got caps made for his fingers.
Other way around.
I love this comment!
Seeing Tony and Ozzy do this brought a tear to my eye. Could be the last time we see them together. True legends. Love that the games organisers had the balls to finish with Black Sabbath. Real metal resurgence going on at the moment. Love it.
Exactly my reaction.
I’m 31, saw them here in New Zealand on the release of the album 13 they did. Couldn’t believe my luck I had the opportunity to see Black Sabbath after all that time. One of my fav nights ever
@@nz540im3 Awesome ! Seen Ozzy 38 times and seen Sabbath 5 times 3 with Ozzy , once with Dio and Once with Ian Gillian from Deep Purple ! Yeah im in my 50's lol ! So cool you got to see the TRUE God's of Metal !
The smile on his face! The fucking smile on his face at 6:12 is so heartwarming. He truly loves nothing more than being on stage in front of a lively audience.
Of course he can't sing a live show anymore, but his vocals (and the movie) on Degeneration Rules, and Patient nr. 9 are fucking incredible, especially when you factor in his health.
Yes, he can do multiple takes. Yes, a lot is repeated so he doesn't have too sing as much. Yes, the vocals can and will be altered during the mixing... But seriously, who gives a shit.
He and almost all the guitarists has recorded with are really neat the top of my favorite artist.
A wonderfully respectful and optimistic analysis as always Justin. It's his first live performance in 4 years at 73 years old and from what I've read it was a pretty late decision to appear at all. He only asked Tony if he could do it when he saw him doing the opening ceremony on his own so I'd be surprised if it was a live vocal. The impressive thing here isn't his voice, it's the fact that he's bouncing up and down 2 months after major back surgery. This is a 73 year old man with a rare non-degenerative form of Parkinsons who hasn't stood up straight for 3 years and here he is jumping!
He's definitely a rock legend isn't he? Can't fault Ozzie at all.
@@jeanproctor3663 the father of metal
There is no non-degenerative form of Parkinson's and it's clear he has been suffering from it a lot longer than since 2019. And yes, I know what I'm talking about.

@@jeanproctor3663 Greetings from your Aussie cousins!
This is one of those rare occasions where I couldn’t care less if the singer is lip-syncing or not. After all Ozzy’s been through, you’ve got to respect the man for simply standing on the stage! For what it’s worth, I think he’s singing, even if it’s not 100% live, and I can’t remember the last time I saw him look so happy, it’s beautiful and heart warming. 🥰
Would you be happy for me, too?
Can assure you he's not singing.
@@noname-ng6sj No you can't. I've seen him sing for over 40 years live, good and bad, the best I've ever seen him sing was with that last Black Sabbath tour, he sounded great , he did hit the odd dud note but some of those early Sabbath tunes weren't written for his vocal range, overall I was stunned by how well he sung....
What I just said to my other half before clicking the play button. It's the occasion and fact that he made the effort to be there. Rock on!
I totally agree with you on that. I think he is lip syncing only because it sounds super clear and you can see like halfway thru the song he tries to do his usual “let me hear you” type crowd work and it doesn’t come thru the mic. I don’t think he wants to lip sync but I’m sure the event kinda made him
If Ozzy lip-syncs now, I don’t blame him. I’m amazed he can stand at a microphone, let alone sing.
Which is exactly why he should retire.
@@MercilessGuitar151 The lure to get healthy and get back to doing what he loves is probably what is keeping him alive. That and the financials for exquisite healthcare
Yup
For real Ozzy paid his dues and deserves a break, there's 20 year old singers who lip sync every performance. He deserves to be on the stage and do what he wants.
@@MercilessGuitar151 why?? he enjoys it so much
I'll tell you what! I was working in the stadium earlier in the afternoon listening to him and Tony sound check and after he finished and had recieved a warm applause and cheers from those present he said loud and clear into the microphone "oh fuck off!"
The guy's a legend and has still got it, especially if you compare him to other 'aged' stars.
During the sound check, how did he sound?
Been an Ozzy fan my whole life and I can honestly say I couldn't give a toss if he was lip syncing, it's not like they were charging fans money for a live performance, just two Birmingham legends appearing together for what is almost certainly the last time. Thanks guys for being the soundtrack to my life.
nail on the head there ^^^^^^
So you'd be ok paying $1,200 for a near front row seat for lip syncing?
Sorry….. rather watch old live videos than be at a “concert” where it’s all playback…..
@@Steve.Cutler i didnt really see lipsyncing, i honestly heard auto tune. which is to be expected the due has Parkinson's. even though i hate autotune. i understand why he had to use it. hes doing his best and fans need to respect him. i dont think hes lipsyncing. i think hes having monitor issues.
@Beth Jenkins, spot on!!
Packed stadium two miles from where he grew up, huge fireworks display, and a helicopter filming it to a live TV audience of millions. If this is Ozzy’s last stand then what a way to go out.
Hopefully it's not he has a new album out on 9th September

Yeah, it was just cool to see him still smiling and performing even if it wasn’t fully live.
@@pablinitortellini I agree and, although I wrote him off from live, maybe he will manage some form of tour next year following the Patient #9 record release...
Couldn't believe what I was seeing, nearly fell off sofa! 😱
They were FANTASTIC. Loved, loved, loved Ozzie. ❤️
Luckily they didnt miss a trick with Dexys, they were the opening act doing Come on Eileen, it was a cracking performance as well!
Check out the album One Day I am Going to Soar - it's by Dexy's in like 2012 or something. Very good.
You’re bang on but thankfully cuming on Eileen wasn’t an event that was televised unlike running and throwing a javelin.
I thought Dexys was one of the best acts. Kevin still sounds great!
@@grantm6933 I went watching them on the tour for that album. My dad runs a big dexys fan sight on facebook and we've made friends with a lot of the band, we got to meet Mick Talbot, Pete William's and Big Jimmy Patterson at the afterparty from the manchester concert, one of the best nights of my adult life.
I had a girlfriend called Eileen once, you can guess what happened..
I saw Sabbath on their last tour a few years ago, and Ozzy definitely at least had some assistance with his vocals at that time. Honestly was just so excited to be in the presence of those absolute legends that I couldn't have cared less.

After having tickets for Ozzy's No More Tours 2 tour for four years, seeing him on stage looking this good makes me so hopeful tat the shows will finally go on next year. Even if it's not fully live it's still Ozzy!!

Dear Justin,
I've enjoyed your channel for a few months now, and wanted to express gratitude: for your effort in producing such an original and interesting show on a regular basis, positivity (in your analysis of music and artists) and overall message, and fun which you are obviously having.
Cheers from Tangier,

I don’t care if Ozzy was lip syncing this. The man is a legend and gave a great performance.
All credit singers get for performing live, Ozzy gets as an advance for being alive and on stage.
This was a heart-felt post of yours, Justin. Right from the soul. Thanx for this, mate.
Let me tell you who I think deserves a massive well done for a return performance at Newport folk festival and that's Joni Mitchell. 78 years old and she performed her 1st gig in 20 years after suffering a burst brain aneurysm. She performed live with no prerecorded 'just in case' vocals. She had Brandi Carlile supporting her along with a lineup of other singers and musicians. Wasnt pitch perfect but those imperfections were somehow as beautiful as her voice at the height of her career. Sure use a bit of lip syncing if needs be, but just be honest about it. Fans would love him all the more and the baying public would have a giant middle finger thrown their way!
When the band started up and you could her Ozzy's voice I thought, oh, fair enough, Ozzy's probably not well enough to show up and they're just using his pre recorded vocals... and then up he popped! Just to see him there and the look on his face was enough, obviously wasn't easy for him. Put a smile on my face.
Good evening Hawkins' community
I first heard it yesterday and honestly from what I've seen and heard it seemed live.
Although I've only been viewing it from a smartphone with a somewhat adequate speaker.
Anyway I found this clip a very unexpected welcome surprise!
Thanks Justin for sharing your impressions of it.
At 67 and a lifetime Ozzy fan, I am just overjoyed to see our dear Ozzy on stage again and clearly he is really enjoying being there, you could see that with that beaming smile, I don't care if he was lip syncing, give the guy a break , after all he has been through, It's just amazing to see him up there bouncing and having a good time. 🤘
Considering the fact there hasn't been a good/tolerable album since No rest for the wicked. No more tears was barely tolerable. Ozzy should have retired a long time ago.

I seen Black Sabbath at Download Festival about 8 years ago (can't quite remember exactly!) They were incredible and Ozzie, Geezer and Tony were absolutely f**king fantastic. Ozzie's voice was immaculate.

They had Dexys performing earlier in the night. A big celebration of Brummy music all round. I know they are technically Wolverhampton, but I was very disappointed Slade wasn’t included. Or Dodgy. But it was pretty cool.

Hello Justin. I just discovered your channel and thought I'd drop a comment to say how much I appreciate your honest and non-biased opinions and reactions to these videos. It is absolutely and literally a breath of fresh air to experience someone inside the music biz being so honest and subjective with your takes on these things. I'm an older guy(56) that has played rock and roll most of my life, but never got that "big break",but still play for the simple love of music and creation. Had I gotten the "big break", and were in your shoes,I no doubt would try my best to be as open and honest as you appear to be. Thanks for these videos and I enjoy watching you be yourself and not just another celeb doing celeb crap. BTW--this profile is from my youtube channel of my current writing/recording project, and my name isn't really "Crazy Nayburz".....Cheers!

Hello Justin, I am a huge fan of The Darkness everysince the 00's. I would really love to hear "Living each day blind" and "I love you 5 times" live, I have search for videos or recordings without luck. Anyway thank you for your kind attention, always looking forward for the next album!! Love from Mexico.

This was amazing. Highlight of the year so far. Yeah even if Ozzy's performance was pre-recorded who cares it would still have been his voice at one point or another. It was an absolutely stunning performance. When Tony looks over at Ozzy/....gives me the chills. Absolute respect to them both. LEGENDS.
How on earth can a pre recorded vocal performance be considered "stunning". I get it you like Ozzy but fucking hell, fanboys are a strange breed.

Justin talking about Ozzy being legend, and not fully appreciating that he himself is a legend! In my view, this is a legend, discussing another legend’s performance! #win
He’s done it for decades. His most recent “Crazy Train” was using audio from a 2010 show, and then who knows if that one was even live? But the fact remains that it’s still Ozzy’s vocals, edited or phoned in or otherwise. They even gave him a small bit of room to sing on his own during “P#9” at the halftime show. It was just mixed in with other takes of the track’s vocals to blend it better.
But come on, we’ve seen Ozzy sing, we’ve seen him jump, but we’ve _never_ seen Ozzy do both simultaneously like recently, so he’s seems to be feeling a little more free with these appearances.
And I absolutely love it because to me he now looks and moves like his Guitar Hero model, which is still one of my favorite moments from that series
I think Ozzy is one of a handful of legends you'd let off with a lip sync because 1. His age and 2. His condition. Amazing he's up there at all. I don't know if it's a lip sync for sure or not but I'm just glad he's still at it.
Slade!!! Noddy f***in Holder!!!
Justin, Daniel below said it well when he said "a wonderfully respectful and optimistic analysis..." I do love that about this podcast. I simply wanted to add that I absolutely love your jacket, particularly the lower sleeves! Gorgeous! Thank-you, as always for brightening my day!
This is awesome!!
I was reading about this on Brian May's "soap box" he was fanboying over Toni Iommi. I'm glad it's up to watch!!
Ozzy is looking happy and it's all awesome!
That amazing screaming just hyping up the vibe, it's super cool!
I don't think it's a track, but if it where who cares. He's fresh out of surgery and can barely move yet he's ROCKING. This is awesome
So much love and good vibes to you Mr. Hawkins!
Ozzy's vocals have always been (at least) double tracked on the albums so adding a recorded unison vocal seems like a pretty standard thing to do. If it was in fact intended to be live my guess is that the front of house mixer heard a voice and didn't realize it wasn't the live vocal from the stage until Ozzy shouted something which wasn't heard. Ozzy's mic was then added to the mix and all was well after that. Often times at these events there is only one generic crew for all the performers and on top of that mixes are often done ahead of time and handed in on a memory stick!
That's definitely a pre recorded vocal track.
I suspect there was some pre-recorded stuff given the circumstances around his health but honestly it was great to see him & Tony at it so who cares in the end. They weren't the only ones that had some form of pre-recorded stuff for musically sections but in the closing & opening ceremonies. Given how those are generally done around timings and keeping things going smoothly it's only to be expected.
I’m sure he sung. For sure
So happy to see Ozzy back on stage! What an absolute legend. No one loves music more than him.
Ozzy has definitely had "assistance ", with his live vocals for years, I saw an interview with a guy who was hired to stand by the side of the stage and "enhance " his vocals, might have been Miles Kennedy now that I think about it, but I might be wrong. He also has a vocoder on his vocals, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of pre recorded vocals as well. That being said, Ozzy's voice is one of my all time favorites, his voice is just so unique and intense, nothing like it.this performance seems pretty legit tho
I have had the feeling that his voice sounds a bit vocoded ever since I saw him at Wacken 2011 but I never cared enough to find out.
Robert Mason is his name, current vocalist for Warrant
@@fusionhaywire A guy who can actually STILL sing. That's the problem here. If you suck and can't do it anymore, nobody wants to see it. At least I don't..because it isn't live.

From the reports coming out recently about his health, im surprised to see him on stage bouncing around. Sharon made it sound like he's on his deathbed
Sharon has albums to flog to the Americans.
He was pretty much on his deathbed for ahwile untill about a month ago, he got a spine surgery so he can walk normal again
I did think he was lip syncing at one point. I am going to see his live show next year, to be honest I really don't care if he lip syncs the whole show. Just to have the man there while his songs are playing at amazing volume I will be well pleased. Either way, good luck to him. If anyone has earned a bit of help Ozzy has. Judas Priest are supporting him on his tour as well 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love the way you approached this. Spot on

He was clearly having a good time and he deserves that at the least
Ozzy's voice sounds really strong when he yell's "I love you Birmingham!" I don't see why he couldn't pull the vocal off live
most of these televised events and award show wont allow the vocal to be live. RHCP and flea always comment on that when they do big shows.
Man you are an unbelievably respectful cat. Nice work
Being from Brum Ozzy is a legend and we love him! Can’t wait for his last tour again this year ❤️
I didnt care if it was fully live or not, its just great to see that Ozzy is still ALIVE. You could see on his face that this is what he still lives for and its what he loves to do.
Ozzy has been helped with vocals for years. That's fine he has earned his place.
A place in a dumpster. Ozzy has always sucked
I saw him with black sabbath in New Zealand in 2013. It was definitely him singing. He was tiring by the end of the show. But it was still absolutely fucking epic.
@@nz540im3 Saw Sabbath on their last tour. It was clearly him, he sang a bunch of songs with the verses in the wrong order 🤣
He did have the TC Helicon pedal that helps with pitch though. I was surprised to see it on stage. Ballsy move, very Ozzy.
Is it "Fine" though.. Is it. There is a thing called retirement. I think Sharon is greedy. I saw Ozzy last in 2008.. It was a good concert.. But borderline.
Nice one Justin. I think the last point you made hits the nail on the head - the audience didn't pay to see Sabbath, so it is what it is 👍
It was just amazing to see these 2 legends back on stage together. I really didn't think that Ozzy would be able to do this much.
Ozzy did enough here, at the very least, to have us take a pretty hard look to answer this question. The verse he sings after he yells out for the first time sounds like he lost a little breath to me, which points a little to live vocals, in my opinion. Regardless, it's an energetic and enthusiastic performance by all and a great video by you, Justin, as usual!
I'd be willing to bet that was live....
Same here. There are definitely some breath pauses and volume drops that you won't get from a clean studio vocal. As someone noted above, he may have recorded it earlier, like day of, just to have a safety net. Even Whitney Houston did it for her Super Bowl rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. She recorded it the day before, during rehearsal
@@MickH60 you'd lose

It sounds too good for a live vocal considering his age and what he's been through, but there are moments when it seems more real. But as you and various others have said, you have to give him props for what he's given over the years and how good that performance looks. He is a legendary singer and performer, and it's great to see him alive, standing up and performing.
Well said sir. Total legend!
Ozzy doing well just to be standing there after after recent problems at the age of 74!!! the man is a legend 👌🏻👍
Hi, would you make a video about HIM (his infernal majesty)? Theyre my guilty pleasure since teenage years, epsecially their 1998-2000 era
The man had covid, just had a surgery, and also has Parkinson’s disease, and people still complain about his performance??? Wtf
Also, I think he's at an age where he can do whatever he wants
Not to mention he doesn't live in Birmingham anymore so travelled primarily for this gig. I'm sure he got financially compensated but they're down to earth guys that never 💩 on their roots and immediately said they'd do it without hesitation. Ozzy is game, I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted to lip sync either but he wouldn't want to miss this for the World and he's desperate to get out there. 100% respect for this man. It's not like he was even an advertised act that people were paying to see either.
Just seen that you're doing gigs with my favourite band Black Stone Cherry! Any chance of a video about them?
Very respectfully put Justin. I think its a combination of the 3 things you said going on here. 1. Ozzy was singing live. 2. I heard a backing track played at low volume likely as just a safety net. If you watch the DVD of Sabbath playing at The End tour in Birmingham Ozzy is out of time on the first track so there was likely an issue with his monitor as he pulls it together by track 2. He's a month away from releasing his new album. It has to sound right. 3. I also saw the part where he was shouting into the Mic with an ad-lib comment which would have caught the sound guy off guard when balancing the mix. Finally..my mate was working the venue and was in the stands during the rehearsal (lucky !) I put it to him about the lip sync comments and he said this "I was in the seats and he was in the middle of the stadium but it looked live. The drummer was definitely going for it. When they stopped moving the music stopped straight away and it was definitely him who told us to fuck off. In my opinion it was live." In relation to Ozzy telling the workers to fuck off it's because they all stopped and clapped him and he said fuck off in the light hearted way he does. 😂😂 Lol Legend. So proud to have Sabbath as a local talent all amazing musicians in their own right. As a band its easy to see why they were so awesome. Cant wait to see Ozzy next year at resorts world in Brum
Having seen Ozzy a couple of times live I can tell you that once Ozzy gets on stage he is an extreme professional. He can run around and bounce without his voice altering. It's called about 50 years experience. The man knows what he is doing on stage.
Well done to the Commonwealth Games. I would have missed this without JHRA channel. Thanks Justin

Some people forgot Ozzy made surprise appearance. SURPRISE! Nobody knew until the last second. I was there and I honestly don’t give a sh*t if he sang it not, he’s been through a lot lately, the man is a legend , the stadium “exploded” , next to us people couldn’t believe their eyes, some other was crying . We saw lots of Black Sabbath fans around the stadium and I can only imagine that maybe be one of the best night in their lives, because even Tony appearance was a surprise. We love you Ozzy and Tony ❤❤

Once Ozzy gets on stage… he is in his true zone. He has always been able to give it all. Watch previous live performances off his face live. It’s his zone. Always delivers
Ozzy is known to have a 'extra guy' who is normally under the stage or at side stage who always sings the higher notes since the late 90s!
Couldn’t help notice you’ve swapped out your Beyerdynamic T1 headphones for the Shure SRH-1540’s. Curious as to why you’ve changed ?
I agree, couldnt give a damn if he's lipsinking, reading lyrics or what ever. Its ozzy freaking osborne and tommy iomi. Just so blessed to be able to see them on stage, loving life and enjoying themselves whilst they still can.
The fact he's on stage giving this kind of energy at his age after what he's been through is just amazing
The voice when he was yelling sounds dry compared the effects on the singing parts. Plus you even mentioned the part where he yells and the mic is off. But again, it's just nice to see Ozzy.
Didn't Dexy's Midnight Runners play at the closing ceremony?
