How can we say today's players are more talented when they lack basic fundamentals on both sides of the ball? I mean, shit man, they don't play defense most of the time, and barely try hard on D as most players are terrified of getting posterized. I would believe that they were more talented if they actually had to play against players that took pride in defense. Because when today's players face actual defensive effort, they normally choke big time.

I have been very critical of the NBA over the years for load management. It is a lazy excuse to get rest when they don't have a major injury. I am ok with players missing games if they are actually injured, sick, or personal reasons, then I am fine with them not playing.
Everybody wants to be loved and remembered like Kobe. They think all they have to do is put up similar numbers! It goes way deeper than that! If you don't appreciate your fans, if they don't feel your love.... they're not gonna give it in return! Kobe will be remembered because he left it all out on the floor. There was literally nothing left for him to give to the game. He squeezed every ounce out of talent and ability, and we were all witnesses to it.
The core of the problem is simple to identify: guaranteed money. If you would pay players per game played (plus incentives for production, awards) the problem would be solved instantly.

For these players, fines mean absolutely nothing. They need much harsher penalties for not playing, like not getting paid if they don't play. And yeah, the 65 game rule is great, but much, much, much, too late. Not being eligible for awards because you didn't play enough should be as embarrassing as it seems. These players have massive contracts of guaranteed money, and only incentivizing playing time will the league get back to superstars actually caring about anything before March.
I agree, they shouldn’t be paid if they don’t play. The 65 game rule is not enough. That means they are allowed 17 games to slack off. Some players make $500K+ per game so load that’s still $8.5m for doing nothing. It should at least a 75 game rule. Any injury must have MRI proof by specialists or else they don’t get paid.
That's why Jordan, Kobe are my faves, they had the same mindset where the didn't want to disappoint the fans who wanted to see them play. Even at age 40, we all know Jordan played all 82 games and it makes that statement even more profound because back then, the league was more physical, medical knowledge and treatment weren't as advanced as they are today as well. It makes it even less of an excuse with today's NBA. My friends and I got to see him play his last game against the Pelicans in New Orleans. In the 4th quarter, everyone was chanting his name during the final minutes when he was going to rest and instead of doing that, he went back into the game until it was over. By contrast, in Wilts 42.5 mpg season, the Warriors had 12 back to back games. Not much difference, right? Yeah, we’ll add to that another 9 stretches of 3 nights in a row, back to back to back. Two stretches of four nights in a row, and one of five nights in a row. That kind of schedule really killed his performances. On the fifth night of the five game stretch, he only went 62 and 23. Then, in the first round of the playoffs, they had a back to back to back, and one back to back in the second round. Now add to this that NBA players now typically travel by chartered planes. In the 60s it was on commercial air, by train, or even by bus. It’s just a much different league now.

Like renaming "shell shock" to "post-traumatic stress disorder", or "cripple" to "physically challenged". They think that if you bloat the name of the condition with extra syllables and big words, you change the condition. Nope, doesn't work like that. All you did was euphemize and sterilize the term that everyone already understood. The NBA has chosen "load management" as the new name for "laziness". Longer, more convoluted, twice as many words, more "professional sounding", but still just means laziness. Unrelated but here's another modern example that George Carlin could have added to his bit if he were still around: "Ebonics" being renamed to "African American Vernacular English". Great vid. I didn't realize that about Iverson. When looking just at games played...he missed quite a few (my quick tally: 168 games missed from 97-2008). But leading the league in minutes played 1997-2008? 7 times in that time period he lead the league in minutes played! That's amazing. BTW: at the age of 32, while with Denver, Iverson played all 82 games AND lead the league in minutes! People forget how little the guy was, and how aggressive he played offensively. His ass got knocked to the ground regularly! And vs. Kobe, in their careers, Iverson averaged 41.1 mpg to Kobe's 36.1. I have to add, Kobe obviously was on some really good teams, and often sat out a significant portion (or all) of the 4th quarter due to blowouts. Still, Iverson was a friggin BEAST!

One other note: Karl Malone missed a TOTAL of 5 games... during his first 13 seasons! Yep, he played all 82 games 8 times in that span. And he was routinely in the top 10 minutes played every season. What a joke today's NBA "stars" are (most of them)

I'll say this - as a FAN, contrary to popular thinking, it's MUCH safer to automatically side with the owners. The owners best interest is to create the best product for the viewer, this attracting the most viewership, and the best league experience. This directly benefits them. You know what benefits the players? Getting the biggest contracts, while playing the least amount of games possible. This basically guarantees a longer career, and maximizes earning potential. But fans, and this is only recently, have started automatically siding with players because places like reddit, and the general online culture has shifted to "rich man bad" no matter what, without applying any critical thinking. This only hurts the fans. Players don't have anywhere near the direct incentive to make an enjoyable product like owners do, only a tertiary incentive. This is basic economics.
Jordan’s quote on performance and money resonates with me greatly, as someone who has once dreamed of being a touring musician and also trying to be an entertainer, but got encouraged to keep on perfecting the craft as told by my mentor - good to have dreams, but perfect the craft first and know living on your own decisions. Getting that huge pay and being able to play in large venues like stadiums would be a dream, but heck, it all starts with playing in smaller venues, and also perfecting the craft until we realize that dream. A good handful of NBA players in my opinion, just want to skip that perfecting the craft part, and go for the money, because that becomes guaranteed. MJ’s quote is similar to this and load management. Having boat-load of money will get you less motivated, and one will not take their job seriously. I think players load manage, due to the mix of their play-style (some lacking fundamentals), the money they are paid, and the amount of work ethic instilled within them.

And yes, looking at # of games played for top players these days is drastically different from previous era's. I'm glad the commish put in this rule, but more importantly, the 65 games rule. How many players in the last 3 years would NOT have qualified for all NBA , DPOY, MVP, etc.. I'd like to see that list. A lot of player legacy's are defined by All nba teams, MVP, etc..
RANT: ok ik most Americans don’t care about or even watch FIBA. BUT Honestly this FIBA has exposed that something about the NBA and American basketball needs to change and fast. Idky Team USA were shocked they lost, when you could clearly see that they were not giving their all, they weren’t showing any real heart. And the 4 times they did actually show heart, they looked a whole ass mess. It seems we focus more on popularity and athleticism than actual skill and passion for the game. They are not training their young talents seriously or properly and it shows. And the Americans need to stop making excuses, it’s not that the players that went weren’t our best players, we need to focus on developing our new talents properly and better, as simple as that. These young talents barely knew how to defend, barely knew how to box out, barely knew how to pass, barely knew how to block, etc. And straight up struggle to even properly operate as a team. The way they got picked apart so easily was crazy. It was honestly embarrassing to even watch. Jumping extremely high, dunking, dribbling, and running fast across the court and trynna show off individually is not going to get the team a win in a tournament. Bcuz you need to work and play as a TEAM like all the other teams do. The criticism, laughs, and jokes Team USA and the USA are receiving are justified for being cocky prior. We needed to be humbled and hopefully this will get the American basketball league to wake up. I just remembered who called out the Spurs for sitting out their stars in some games. The NBA penalized the Spurs for it. Then a year later, the same people who complained about the Spurs came up with the term "load management" with "player empowerment" as an additional excuse.
I'm surprised that it wasn't mentioned in the video, or if it was I missed it, that Jordan had a "love of the game" clause in his contract. He could play basketball anywhere and anytime he wanted because he loved basketball that much. It was only in his original deal and was removed when he signed the contract extension in 1988, but that shows just how dedicated he was to the game. In my opinion, the players from the early days through the mid 2000's played the game of basketball because they loved it. They were true professionals and real men from a time when the NBA was a "No boys allowed" kind of league. Guys like Stockton, A.C. Green, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Kobe, and Iverson were like Cal Ripken in MLB, the Iron Men who suited up for almost every game and didn't want to disappoint fans. Guys like that are cut from a different cloth. This was a mentality that was instilled in them from a young age. They proved their greatness through their work ethic and dedication to the game. As a fan, you have to respect that level of professionalism and dedication, even if you may not like the player themselves. This load management b.s. is an insult to the fans and the game.
Kobe and MJ took pride in playing as many games as possible. I remember when the Spurs did it - it was something new and different. But yeah if you're still young and not injured, you have a responsibility to play. Especially when you get paid as much as these guys do!
I am a Spurs fan, and used to be real high on Kawhi. Even when he went to Toronto, he was my favorite player, and I really enjoyed watching their chip run. I thought he was a tough, hard nosed player. And maybe he is on the court, but he is not the man I thought he was off the court. He is one of the biggest pre-madonnas in sports history, and I would never have thought that his first few seasons. He is such a major disappointment, and an absolute disgrace to the NBA

I’m not sure about this comparison, Kawhi may have an arthritic knee condition which is much different than getting injured and healing. An arthritic knee condition most likely is not going to get better and is painful. That’s my gut feeling with him. Players not playing is a major issue though, the other thing is we know more about rehabilitation and recovery. The player to look at in terms of playing with injuries would be Grant Hill, he played through pain and literally shortened his career potential by playing on a damaged ankle, he was literally playing with no cartilage in his ankle. So that was an old school mentality that really hurt his career and pushed by the team. So it still depends, Kobe’s injuries came later in his career. Some of these guys are wimpy others like Kawhi and George may never be able to play injury free again, unfortunately. Some players have been blessed to have minimal injuries, or had them much later in their careers MJ, Kobe, LeBron, Kareem, Giannis, Joker, etc…look at Embid, Zion will they make it past early 30s. Look at Blake Griffin for example something definitely going on with his knees. Also San Antonio started that sitting players and other teams adopted because of their success so… I think stars should have to play on the road, And if they’re not going to play in home games, the fan should be able to substitute the ticket for another game. Also, if a star is not going to play, they should have to sign autographs for at least an hour with fans. Just sayin’

I appreciate what you’re saying. But you are missing one thing. It is not necessarily that they do not care, I just do not believe they are tough and are not nearly as tough as they were 25-30 years ago.
Actually, yesterday's players were just as skilled as today's players. This style of play has changed in the current era which allows today's players to take shots that yesterday's players were philosophically prohibited to take due to scheme. Players such as Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, David Robinson, and Hakeem Olajuwon could actually shoot threes. They used to do so in practice all of the time. But it was an inside-outside game, which kept them in the paint instead of stretching the floor to the degree they were able. Guards could handle the ball and shoot from just as deep. In the previous eras, those deeper range shots were considered poor shot selection. Players were just as skilled. What they are allowed to do and what is considered acceptable in contemporary times is the modern difference.
to be fair to kawhi, he is currently experiencing Grant Hill injury moments... thankfully he is playing today, which the medical technology is far better than Grant Hill had that time...
Truth is this. Stars nowadays wants to prolong their career. So that they can get multiple max contracts $$$. Back in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, stars just want to lead their teams to win and they average career are shorter.
We should lay a large portion of the blame at the feet of Popavich. Anytime someone does something new and is successful, the whole league copies. That's what happened here. Its also why I root against the likes of Kwahi Leonard. And against purchased superteams for that matter. Happy to see teams like the Nuggets and Heat in the Finals. Home grown teams with no load management bullshit. Hopefully the rest of the league will try to copy that now.

I have been very critical of the NBA over the years for load management. It is a lazy excuse to get rest when they don't have a major injury. I am ok with players missing games if they are actually injured, sick, or personal reasons, then I am fine with them not playing.

For these players, fines mean absolutely nothing. They need much harsher penalties for not playing, like not getting paid if they don't play. And yeah, the 65 game rule is great, but much, much, much, too late. Not being eligible for awards because you didn't play enough should be as embarrassing as it seems. These players have massive contracts of guaranteed money, and only incentivizing playing time will the league get back to superstars actually caring about anything before March.
I agree, they shouldn’t be paid if they don’t play. The 65 game rule is not enough. That means they are allowed 17 games to slack off. Some players make $500K+ per game so load that’s still $8.5m for doing nothing. It should at least a 75 game rule. Any injury must have MRI proof by specialists or else they don’t get paid.
That's why Jordan, Kobe are my faves, they had the same mindset where the didn't want to disappoint the fans who wanted to see them play. Even at age 40, we all know Jordan played all 82 games and it makes that statement even more profound because back then, the league was more physical, medical knowledge and treatment weren't as advanced as they are today as well. My friends and I got to see him play his last game against the Pelicans in New Orleans. Hard to compare just by saying minutes per game. Last year, for example, the Clippers had 11 back to back games, and everyone knows how hard back to backs are on the players.
By contrast, in Wilts 42.5 mpg season, the Warriors had 12 back to back games. Not much difference, right? Yeah, we’ll add to that another 9 stretches of 3 nights in a row, back to back to back. Two stretches of four nights in a row, and one of five nights in a row. That kind of schedule really killed his performances. On the fifth night of the five game stretch, he only went 62 and 23. Then, in the first round of the playoffs, they had a back to back to back, and one back to back in the second round.
Now add to this that NBA players now typically travel by chartered planes. In the 60s it was on commercial air, by train, or even by bus. It’s just a much different league now.

Great vid. I didn't realize that about Iverson. When looking just at games played...he missed quite a few (my quick tally: 168 games missed from 97-2008). But leading the league in minutes played 1997-2008? 7 times in that time period he lead the league in minutes played! That's amazing. BTW: at the age of 32, while with Denver, Iverson played all 82 games AND lead the league in minutes! People forget how little the guy was, and how aggressive he played offensively. His ass got knocked to the ground regularly! And vs. Kobe, in their careers, Iverson averaged 41.1 mpg to Kobe's 36.1. I have to add, Kobe obviously was on some really good teams, and often sat out a significant portion (or all) of the 4th quarter due to blowouts. Still, Iverson was a friggin BEAST!

Jordan’s quote on performance and money resonates with me greatly, as someone who has once dreamed of being a touring musician and also trying to be an entertainer, but got encouraged to keep on perfecting the craft as told by my mentor - good to have dreams, but perfect the craft first and know living on your own decisions. Getting that huge pay and being able to play in large venues like stadiums would be a dream, but heck, it all starts with playing in smaller venues, and also perfecting the craft until we realize that dream. RANT: ok ik most Americans don’t care about or even watch FIBA. BUT Honestly this FIBA has exposed that something about the NBA and American basketball needs to change and fast. Idky Team USA were shocked they lost, when you could clearly see that they were not giving their all, they weren’t showing any real heart. And the 4 times they did actually show heart, they looked a whole ass mess. It seems we focus more on popularity and athleticism than actual skill and passion for the game. They are not training their young talents seriously or properly and it shows. And the Americans need to stop making excuses, it’s not that the players that went weren’t our best players, we need to focus on developing our new talents properly and better, as simple as that. These young talents barely knew how to defend, barely knew how to box out, barely knew how to pass, barely knew how to block, etc. And straight up struggle to even properly operate as a team. Jumping extremely high, dunking, dribbling, and running fast across the court and trynna show off individually is not going to get the team a win in a tournament. Some of the best veteran American NBA players have been saying this for years. I'm surprised that it wasn't mentioned in the video, or if it was I missed it, that Jordan had a "love of the game" clause in his contract. He could play basketball anywhere and anytime he wanted because he loved basketball that much. It was only in his original deal and was removed when he signed the contract extension in 1988, but that shows just how dedicated he was to the game.
In my opinion, the players from the early days through the mid 2000's played the game of basketball because they loved it. They were true professionals and real men from a time when the NBA was a "No boys allowed" kind of league. Guys like Stockton, A.C. Green, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Kobe, and Iverson were like Cal Ripken in MLB, the Iron Men who suited up for almost every game and didn't want to disappoint fans. Guys like that are cut from a different cloth. This was a mentality that was instilled in them from a young age. They proved their greatness through their work ethic and dedication to the game. As a fan, you have to respect that level of professionalism and dedication, even if you may not like the player themselves. This load management b.s. is an insult to the fans and the game.
Kobe and MJ took pride in playing as many games as possible. I remember when the Spurs did it - it was something new and different. But yeah if you're still young and not injured, you have a responsibility to play. Especially when you get paid as much as these guys do!

I am a Spurs fan, and used to be real high on Kawhi. Even when he went to Toronto, he was my favorite player, and I really enjoyed watching their chip run. I thought he was a tough, hard nosed player. And maybe he is on the court, but he is not the man I thought he was off the court. He is one of the biggest pre-madonnas in sports history, and I would never have thought that his first few seasons. He is such a major disappointment, and an absolute disgrace to the NBA
my only complaint about this new penalty is the amount. should be one million fine for each game missed instead of starting at hundred grand.
There should be a min game per season requirement to be eligible for max contracts
NBA owners might be forced to pull a page out of the NFL book. No guaranteed contracts. They will play much harder.

I’m not sure about this comparison, Kawhi may have an arthritic knee condition which is much different than getting injured and healing. An arthritic knee condition most likely is not going to get better and is painful. That’s my gut feeling with him. Players not playing is a major issue though, the other thing is we know more about rehabilitation and recovery. The player to look at in terms of playing with injuries would be Grant Hill, he played through pain and literally shortened his career potential by playing on a damaged ankle, he was literally playing with no cartilage in his ankle. So that was an old school mentality that really hurt his career and pushed by the team. So it still depends, Kobe’s injuries came later in his career. Some of these guys are wimpy others like Kawhi and George may never be able to play injury free again, unfortunately. Some players have been blessed to have minimal injuries, or had them much later in their careers MJ, Kobe, LeBron, Kareem, Giannis, Joker, etc…look at Embid, Zion will they make it past early 30s. Look at Blake Griffin for example something definitely going on with his knees. Also San Antonio started that sitting players and other teams adopted because of their success so… I think stars should have to play on the road, And if they’re not going to play in home games, the fan should be able to substitute the ticket for another game. Also, if a star is not going to play, they should have to sign autographs for at least an hour with fans. Just sayin’

NBA needs a rule that divides player`s year salary by 1/82 and gives them as much as the number of games played.
When the spurs did it it was always at the end of the year the last 5 games not in the middle of the season I hate when ppl use the spurs as an example when it was never during when the season is in affect

I appreciate what you’re saying. But you are missing one thing. It is not necessarily that they do not care, I just do not believe they are tough and are not nearly as tough as they were 25-30 years ago.
Actually, yesterday's players were just as skilled as today's players. This style of play has changed in the current era which allows today's players to take shots that yesterday's players were philosophically prohibited to take due to scheme. Players such as Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, David Robinson, and Hakeem Olajuwon could actually shoot threes. They used to do so in practice all of the time. But it was an inside-outside game, which kept them in the paint instead of stretching the floor to the degree they were able. Guards could handle the ball and shoot from just as deep. In the previous eras, those deeper range shots were considered poor shot selection. Players were just as skilled. What they are allowed to do and what is considered acceptable in contemporary times is the modern difference.
to be fair to kawhi, he is currently experiencing Grant Hill injury moments... thankfully he is playing today, which the medical technology is far better than Grant Hill had that time...

Truth is this. Stars nowadays wants to prolong their career. So that they can get multiple max contracts $$$. Back in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, stars just want to lead their teams to win and they average career are shorter.

We should lay a large portion of the blame at the feet of Popavich. Anytime someone does something new and is successful, the whole league copies. That's what happened here. Its also why I root against the likes of Kwahi Leonard. And against purchased superteams for that matter. Happy to see teams like the Nuggets and Heat in the Finals. Home grown teams with no load management bullshit. Hopefully the rest of the league will try to copy that now.
