      Hey Rob, i'm looking to mullet my stilus to, but I want to use a zeb 180mm. This wil give the bike 1 degree more slackness i think. What do you on a longer travel fork?

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Richard, you may be pushing it a bit with 180, will slacken it off a lot with mullet too. Most I’d go is 170 which is still a decent increase over stock (they originally had 150mm on this bike)

      @@RobRidesEMTB Thanks for the advice. Still not sure what to do now. Keep my 27,5 wheels with a 180 fork ( that should give me 1,5 degree more slack, every 10MM is 0,5 degree slack). or do what you did and go for the same setup. In my opinion the slack is the same, what do you prefere and why? sorry for my nagging, the doubt is making me crazy ;-)... Love your channel by the way... Cheers

    There’s nothing like us Brits for meddling.
    I’ve swapped out so much stuff on my Stilus, my wife is sick of ‘bloody bike bits’ arriving through the post.
    Also, there’s something cathartic and rewarding about actually doing the calculations, upgrades and work yourself.... offset, travel, height, reach, clearance, 1 finger/2 finger, choosing bigger or smaller components, even down to something as simple as Grips. Just mind boggling how much of an expert you become in the field of ‘building your own bike’.
    Your video confirms my suspicion that I’m not the only one doing this, I felt obsessive before but now I can carry on tweaking.
    Thanks, great video as always Rob. One of my favourite channels.

    That look amazing. I also have a Stilus which I’ve just fitted a 2021 Lyrik to and a 29 wheel is on its way soon so I can go full mullet. It rides so well and has opened up so much more riding than a traditional mountain bike, while also having the stability and handling of my old downhill bike.

    @SubmarinersDive Před 3 lety

    Rob, I like all the additions you have made. They all make perfect sense, and look amazing as well. Cane Creek is just a couple of hours from me, and they make some of the best suspension components in the industry. Thanks for the bike check, it really reaffirms some of the changes I have planned for my bike this winter.
    Best Regards,

From acoustic bikes we'd been leaning to shorter chainstays for nimble playable feel, so getting my head around the longer chainstays of planted ebikes is finally making sense : nobody wants to wash out the front wheel with that extra speed and weight

    I understand the criticism of the geometry of the base bike, however, Decathlon did themselves no favours by producing just three sizes called M, L and XL when really these bikes are size S, M and L. So there is not really an XL which someone as tall as Rob needs.
    The chainstay length is a matter of what the bike is being used for. I live in the alps and we often do long steep climbs and I often wish I had a chainstay as long as on this Stilus so that I can get more weight on the front wheel. Every 10mm of extra chainstay puts an extra 1kg of weight on the front wheel! I would be very surprised if I lost out very much on the descent with a longer chainstay.

      Is this new weight MORE or LESS than the off the shelf bike weight please?
      And how much extra did it cost to get this to how you like?
      Thanks

    That seatpost is quite good mine has been getting flogged for the last year and is still good a little side to side play but I don't notice it
    They're easy to modify for the amount of extention travel if U need to reduce it.
    Trick bike Rob
    Have you considered running a little bit longer stem
    Way way way way way back
    We used to run 150 mm stems on our cross-country bikes
    And 90 was a short stem in the downhill scene
    Maybe try 10 or 15 mm longer
    Just don't have it rising up
    It will slow your steering down a little bit too

    Regarding the geo; perhaps Decathlon have got it right and everyone else has got it wrong. Someone has to be first. Maybe in 3 years all mtbs will have frames with this geometry! I thought what a load of BS when manufacturers started bringing out 29ers and now they're probably the standard wheel size.

    I bought an ebike with even worse geometry and upgraded it until it became a modern enduro downhill machine. Head tube Angle from 68 to 63.5 degrees (or 65 with 27,5 wheels) . 180mm travel upfront, mud tires. And I am a sender and it works great. Need a new shock but other than that, my bike rides really well

    Rob, you know I love you man but (unless you’ve got more money than sense) please explain to us mere mortals the logic of buying a inexpensive full suss e-MTB only to pour a truckload of money (of HOPE goodies) into upgrading it? Yes your entire built still came under £5k but unlike the rest of us poor working slobs, you’re in a pretty unique position. The real question that has to be asked (And remains unanswered) is can the common man do a similar upgrade on the same bike but ON A BUDGET?
    I’m gonna do a video to answer that precise question based on the experience I’ve had upgrading my 2018 Giant Fathom E+3 29er HT (£1800). Watch this space!

    • @johnchristopher5075
      @johnchristopher5075 Před 3 lety

      @Brendan Tovey I hear you loud and clear but Decathlon wasn’t marketing this bike to the hardcore and experienced e-mtber. The price point of this bike was squarely aimed at those e-MTB virgins getting into the sport for the first time and those on a budget that could just about stretch to this full suss. I brought my entry level HT because it was a exercise in risk management. If it all went wrong, I could afford to take a hit on £1800 as opposed to £3K and even after 18 months of peddling, I’ve still spent less than £1k on upgrades. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. The TWO biggest things that you can’t readily change on a e-MTB without sending you to the poor house are the battery and the motor. My bike was shipped with a 400wh battery, which IMHO is only good for committing duties to and from work. It was a decision I have lived to regret.

    • @johnchristopher5075
      @johnchristopher5075 Před 3 lety

      @Brendan Tovey would YOU buy (£3000) a used e-MTB full suss with no warranty on either the motor or battery? Ummmm!

    • @johnchristopher5075
      @johnchristopher5075 Před 3 lety

      @Brendan Tovey Well that’s where my late wife and I started ( in a small two bedroomed flat), so your analogy is smack on the money. Alas until the market for 2nd hand e-mtb’s stabilizes and comes with some kind of warranty and peace of mind for the buyer, I won’t be dipping my little piggy into that shark infested pond anytime soon. Irrespective whether you’re a newbie or an experienced rider, money is still the same and so it the pain when you’ve been given third degree burns.
