    The last topic about the drive train hits the nail. I think 8 to 10 gears could be a good range to work with. Also this could be used to build more durable cassettes an chains.
    Also some kind of smart gear change with a perfect timing synced to the motor. That would be awesome.

    Just FYI, you can run a Kenevo Expert as a mullet. The Boxxer takes a 29er front and lets you drop the forks through the triple clamps 10mm to keep the geo. Marshall Mullen runs his as a mullet. 🙂

    Thanks Rob and liking the new studio set. In my humble opinion. The extra gears 12 speed won’t make much weight difference for an ebike. Having the extra bigger gear will allow the rider rather then the motor to do the much steeper longer climbs consuming less battery power. A big long days ride even a 700Wh battery on a Specilized Levo will run out.
    In summary 2 benefits, easier leg power on very steep long climbs and battery conservation.

    Rob thx for highlighting the MAX system bike limitations, the manufacturers do not speak about this... It was very tough for me to select a bike. I am a heavyweight I selected a Merida E-one 60 up to 150kg. I love it. I was hesitating between Cannondale and Merida. Since I bought the bike I lost 20kg :) so spread the word on the Max system weight BS.

    Brilliant vid Rob....as always . Karim was absolutely right about the gearing on EBikes . I’ve got a Levo and I’ve often thought that I didn’t need as many cogs on the cassette . However ....I did recently try out an SL.....and I definitely needed all the cogs on that cassette lol 😂 . The SL wasn’t for me ......if I’d never owned an EBike...then maybe....but once you’ve had a taste of those 90NM on the Full Fat Levo.....it’s hard to forget

    great vid and something I learned the expensive way. My $5500 carbon framed low spec bike required full brake and rotor upgrade after a run down a wet mountain. Compared to the alps this is a hill. My expensive bike is a much heavier joy to ride now but still with a few things that I can live with but know many of the other brands have bettered. 50 and feeling useless, unable to keep up with younger legs it's new bike time and e-bikes are the way. Lesson learned, the Levo is to me, my $5500 carbon frame, modified and this time it's alloy with brakes, rotors etc that simply failed on a much lighter bike with a big heavy motor, not without fault, and an asking price of over $10,000 with only 29" wheels, no flip chip, 3 pawl low engagement hub, 12 speed cassette, big chain ring, smaller cranks... similar expensive problems at a higher expense to me. The great news is the amount of competition on offer shows that some are rider focussed offering reliable, end to end value befitting the high price and pedals and saddle are all I need.

    I have the 2020 specialized kenovo expert and this bike is great but if you buy a e-bike make sure it is near the bike shop as they break a lot. I am waiting for wheels as the so called DH rims ain't up to it as one rim cracking at the spokes and now the hub has failed also on my 3rd free hub. 2nd seat post,2nd motor, 6th cassette,2nd derailleur , 4 coil shock failures which I have to send to Silverfish in Newport and the fox shock keeps blowing the cast shock body as just posted this morning after lots of emails. The Boxer forks have had HSC/LSC damping internals but still have metal to metal contact when bottoming unless 125psi so low speed feel is lost even with 6 spacers. £6999 is to expensive and the bike is built down to a price. Chris at Berkshire Bikes has been helpful so that's is a plus but as in my first line buy near so when something brakes and it will it can be fixed.

    I agree about the ebike specific drive trains as less gears would mean wider stronger longer lasting chains and I'm sure a 10spd 10 to 42 would be ample but cassettes do not add to rotational weight, tyres, tubes and rims do of course 👍

    Hey Rob Rides Emtb! Regarding the folks who want less speeds on the rear cassette they my want to switch the shifter if it is an ebike specific single shift limited unit! To prevent riders from shifting multiple gears under maximum load conditions and breaking the chain some ebikes come with shifters that only change one gear at a time instead of 3 for 4 in one lever press. Maybe that is the issue with the rider on the Norco sight vlt! I like the 11 speed cassette on my ebike and would be less satisfied with the larger ratio change that comes from fewer rear cogs! Ride ride ride!

  • @asceticscorpio972
    @asceticscorpio972 Před 3 lety

    I've been saying it ever since I demoed my first eMTB ( It was a 2018 Levo) e bikes need e bike specific drivetrains. For the reasons Kareem stated and because of all the additional torque that is put on the system. The newer freehub standards XD driver and microspline are not as long as the most recent HG they are more stubby which is a good thing for all the torque produced by the motor. I think microspline should be the freehub body of choice as the short and stubby shape and the many many small splines will last longer than the most recent HG freehub bodies then it would need a 9t-46t 10 speed cassette with a 32t chainring or an 11t-50t 10 speed cassette with a 36t chainring

    I have not ride a full power e-bike, but the classic downhill 10 speed look the way to go, 10 speed road cassete from shimano (Tiagra CS-HG500-10), and Saint
    derailleur for durability.
    First time i like the e-bikes was when i see the more "downhill" oriented, like the Haibike XDURO Dwnhll, but the reviews stated a litle bit of lack in power, but that was like 4-5 year ago, and as motor and battery technologies improve, i think thats the way to go.

  • @stephendavies6325

    In relation to 8, 10 & 12 speed. It's all about sales volume. The price was so high they never sold many EX 8 speed which is why it got scrapped. The issue I have with 12 speed is not the number of gears or the weight as 200g savings on a 23KG bike is not really a big deal. The issue is paying £200 for a casette and chain. I get through 3 sets a year on my ebike.
    I'm so glad I'm stuck with 2 x 10. I bought two 10 speed 11-42 cassettes a while back for £30 and a chain for £25.
    Hopefully selling more 12 speed will bring the price down but if I was forced to go single ring on an ebike, I'd be changing to a 10 speed 11-42 from the start, switching to a 38 tooth chainring and selling my 12 speed cassette, deraileur and shifter.

    What we need is the Revonte style automatic transmission and motor system refined for dual suspension Emtbs .All the motor manufactures are currently working on them.Simply select your desired cadence and go for it or set your own virtual ratios. I've got 3 EMtbs one with 14speed Rohloff hub really good but I am not buying another Emtb until I can get a mid mounted auto combined motor and gearbox. Derailleur is efficient but hopelessly vulnerable in the rocks and gluey mud. E=MTB²

      They’re probably working on that very thing just now and may even have prototypes but is the world ready for this yet. It will take a lot of time and money to develop and manufacturers will want a return on that investment. It’s not just the public that maybe put off by a emtb that seems more like a motorbike but also the law makers who may take a dim view. I think Ebikes will need to be much more common place before we see any such development released and accepted.

    As a sidenote to the gears question. More gears will result in the need for thinner cogs and chains. That will mean a shorter lifecycle on the gears and chain since the added power of the motor already increase the wear and tear. A 10 speed casette have a thicker and more durable chain than a 12 speed one. I would think, from a durability-point of view, 9 gears would be optimal. These chains are even more tough.

    • @mtbmike9866
      @mtbmike9866 Před 3 lety +3

      Wrong wrong wrong!!
      The side of the chain is not what stretches, it’s the pins deforming. 12sp pins are shorter than 9sp pins thus the width overall is thinner. Because the pins are shorter, 12sp pins are harder to deform than longer 9sp pins thus have better longevity. Don’t believe? Try bending a 4” long pencil and a 8” long pencil and tell me which bends easier. Still don’t buy it? Go look at the physical test data.

    Sram ex8 for me, from start - even without ever trying it - was not usable just on the cassete price alone. More than 400€ for a cassete that normally wears and has to be replaced? XT 12sp cassete is 1/4 the price of that.

    Why do you name the fork types by clamp count? And even then the number of clamps is wrong.
    I normally know it as dual/double and single crown forks. But even when you name it by clamps, doesnt dual crown forks have 4 clamps and single crown mostly 0 because the stanchions are part of the crown?
