Using the scrap for a shim is the most economical route it seems, I know I sure in the hell wont use the canopy sandwiched in between all that lol. Hopefully y’all can come up with a larger canopy from forward to aft!!!
Just out of curiosity, doesn’t PART 103 guidelines say that you “cannot have a canopy”? If you can have one, I would really like to know, because of the benefits of having a canopy!
Never was a requirement that I know of. Piper, Cessna, etc, Cessna in particular, never zinc chromated their aluminum parts for many years. I presume to save weight and cost. Modern practice is to use an epoxy primer. Though you will see ZC. Hangared and not in a salt air environment usually will last many years without treating with paint.

That latch assembly looks really involved and unnecessary. Why not do a simple coffer latch?
