- Bobs Hummelbird Aircraft - Plans Built Project
Welcome to the Experimental Aircraft Channel. In this episode we end our visit to Moorseville NC with an interview with Bob Thayer who is building a Hummel Aviation Hummelbird Experimental Aircraft. He will be powering this aircraft with a Half-VW engine sourced from many different plans/suppliers. Follow along as we learn how this project came to be and the journey to build it to this point.

Morry was a great metalsmith and I like his designs. It is great to see people build his airplanes.
Agreed! Thank you for taking the time to watch. I appreciate it.
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel where do I buy plans
@@davidhill8811 Hey David! Looks like they are available online. I believe this is the correct link...Thanks for Watching: flyhummel.com/shop/plans-kits-info/
I completed one of these a year ago. I chose the tail dragger configuration only because I like the looks of it. I can understand the apprehension of flying it for the first time, I had to push myself a little to get in and do it. All in all it was a fun pproject and flys well.
Thank you! 🙂
Just read about a version someone built with retracts. But, it seems there is a never-ending variety of designs. Nice little airplane !
EAAChapter 907 in Mt Pleasant, MI. Are just starting to build a Hummel H5 with our youth workshop. We are currently fabricating the templates and form blocks for the bulkheads and ribs. Hope get our kids to make the actual bulkheads, etc.
Walter Ballauer ... How awesome! What a great project for your chapter and the kids. Thanks for sharing and Thank You for watching!
Good on him for building his dream plane from scratch. I'd imagine there are more folks building experimental aircraft in the USA than anywhere else. The concept of doing that seems to be well supported by laws and regulations as far as I can see. Australia's vast distances cry out for such an innovative approach, but I think experimental aircraft construction is infrequent.
Not hard to see, considering how you need an inspection and permission to do even relatively basic mods to your car🤷♂️
Can you NOT build anything you want in Australia? And have it inspected when you are finished?
What a lovely gentleman! Excellent work. Wonder how far off he is now
If I could build an aircraft, it would definitely be a Hummel. Great little birds! Think I'd be working toward electric power, for the quietest flight achievable. A hang glider holdout - I like it quiet; not even a variometer, they drive me nuts w/ the constant beeping. Just me and the wind.
Why not take up skydiving?
Lovely airplane. Love to fly it.
Nice one enjoyed the sctatchbuild, wish I could a seen the wings but did enjoy it.
Thanks! I would have liked to see the wings IN DETAIL as well but they were in the back of the shop and not easily accessible. (Long term storage at that moment). Thank you for watching!
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I try not miss an episode, always thought the Hummel a bit of an oddity but can't deny it's a legendary design, I was once looking at taking possession of a 'Teenie Two' build which had some Hummel mods but found some corrosion from long term storage that killed the deal, unfortunately, looking at that metal work makes my mouth water for another sheet build - maybe one day in the meantime I have channels like this to keep my passion going
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I try not miss an episode, always thought of the Hummel as a bit of an oddity with it's strangely small fuselage and large ugly wings but you can't deny it's legend and the genius of the design. I almost took possession of a very similar 'Teenie Two' project which had some Hummel mods but due to long term storage it had signs of corrosion so I abandoned the deal. Seeing that scratch metal work makes my mouth water for another sheet metal build, such satisfying work.
Very cool and nice little airplane, I was just thinking to built something similar but from composite (based on Burt Rutan and Mike Arnold methods which I discovered recently) and use engine from BMW R-type motorcycle (lightweight and powerful with all accessories like starter and alternator, some models even have 2 spark plugs per head which is also convenient )
thanks for doing this....
YOU are VERY welcome! I very much enjoyed making this video with Bob and learning about his airplane project. Thanks for watching!
10 year build! WoW!
I think it can be built in something like 400 hrs !!
Scratch building, where I am at. You know every part of your aircraft. I have even done my weldments. Started with Windwagon plans but adding a lo of the Hummel changes.
Nice! I also enjoy scratch building. Taking flat sheet stock and turning it into functional piece of artwork is VERY rewarding! Maybe you would like to share some video clips of your project? Send me an email: info@experimentalaircraftchannel.com Thanks for watching!
Thanks very much I enjoyed your video and your talk. I’ve always wanted to build one of those as well. I need something with folding wings
I'm loving these videos. If you know anyone with an Aircam (especially on floats) I'd love to see your version of a video on it. I've been on a big amphibian and bush plane kick lately so any videos of other airframes you haven't done yet would be appreciated as well.
Thank you! Actually I might. Someone in North FL send me a message he was about to paint his Aircam. Not sure if it was going on floats or not. I WILL INQUIRE AGAIN. Thanks for the suggestion. Thank you for watching!
Nice one.....
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
I built one of these....Amazing Little Bird...…..
can you fit a transponder in it? thinking about building on but I have B, D, & C all around me
Which is much better metal sheet or fibre plastic for the aircraft body,
Victor Konsam Honestly it is a matter or preference. Both are really great options for building aircraft. Sheet metal (aluminum) or Composite. Thank you for watching! Maybe you will build something in 2019?!
H5 is the plane formerly known as the Ultra Cruiser Plus.
Good to know! Thank you for watching! I appreciate it!
They took the best parts of the UltraCruiser, the UltraCruiser plus, and some modifications that were tried on the Plus, and created the H5. I built a UC plus tri-gear and it’s a fun plane to fly, but the H5 out performs my plane.
WHERE ABOUT IN MOORESVILLE AREYOU LOCATED I LIVE IN MAIDEN ABOUT 5 MILES FROM LANNYS AIR FIELD I WOULD LIKE COME BY AND VISIT. IM WANTING TO FIND A ULTRALIGHT AERO 103 YOU SOUND LIKE A GOOD PERSON TO TAKE TO. I ENJOYED THE VIDEOS.
My dad build a 1/2 V'dub, plans and advice from Morry Hummel himself. How U suspect dad, Morry and others are all flying together up there now.
I’d need to make the cockpit area a little longer and a lot, a whole lot wider to accept my very wide and round frame.
I ❤🛩
Thanks! Thank you for watching!
Any interest in purchasing a completed Hummel bird fusalage?
Maybe, if you still have it.
@@brettrat9273 my mom owns it but she is still looking to sell it
@@Ken-qz7ef How much is she asking and where is it located?

The Hummel may well be the smallest “real” airplane out there 👍
There are a few tinier.. I wouldn't fly them though.. not at 6'0" ;)
It may be... but they are quite popular for sure. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Cri cri is a real airplane. Twin engine!
Where do I get plans
Where can I get plans
Hard landings - not good for the gear and spar.
Looks like a very nice job but 10+ years to build it? It doesn't seem like this gentleman ever intends to fly it. He just want something to tinker with.
Too much noise from others juring this interview hard to hear the builder talk
Too bad the hangers-on couldn't keep the talk down for 12 minutes of their life.
What is the point of the interviewer talking over the builder, and not even knowing what model aircraft is being built ? Plan intelligent questions, and then wait for the damn answer !
170lbs 😂
Martin Kaufmann The Hummel H5 can handle a 6’2” 300lbs pilot if you need something bigger. It’s also an experimental class/ sport class aircraft like the HummelBird.
Hiflier35thCAG thanks, I check that out!

How many elderly American men are killed in home built experimental aircraft each year? They must begin their project in middle age. The project out grows the basement or their first marriage and moves to the garage. Sometime after qualifying for Social Security, the plane nears completion. At this point, with grandchildren lending a hand, the "experimental" get's in the air. Then, grandpa dies on the six o'clock news.
I Flick.... well to a degree I guess I can't argue that. These projects often take a long time and get put on the back burner. Reality... life (people and family) are more important than airplanes and life get's in the way of our passions and dreams. But... often the living takes place in the journey doesn't it? In the meantime.... there is a HUGE amount of fellowship and friendships that are made in the process that many of us would never trade. Truly an awesome community. If you haven't started a project yet and are involved with a chapter building or a maybe a friend that is interested in building at the same time... consider this your invitation! "Just Build It" :-)
I agree. I spent 2 years on the Hummelbird. Retired so had plenty of time. I realized I was in over my head. I spent about $6,000, BUT, my purpose was to learn airframe construction and I did. It was becoming ever more stressful to try to get it right every time in every way. Big personal moment when I said, "This is just a prototype, a learning project, not meant to be flyable." Sad, but a mature moment.
I gave the project to a young man who wanted to see how one looked. That would be an enormous help to a builder. I had many hours trying to visualize from the paper plans.
I do want to say my set of plans had numerous errors in dimensions, that sure didn't help. Someone said you build two planes, the one you learn on and the one you fly.
I am a pilot and owned two production lightplanes. I wanted to learn construction so it was hard, but I learned airplanes and a lot about myself.
I would ask, how many elderly men lose their lives in the restored sports car they have been restoring for the last twenty years?
How many young men wind up on the six o'clock news crashing their airplane, car, boat, jetski etc.
We all are going to die. You usually have little control over how it happens, so build your airplane, car, boat, whatever and enjoy the experience while you can. It's better than vegging on the couch waiting for the Grim Riper.
