- On January 27, 1991-ten days into the Persian Gulf War-Whitney Houston took the field at Tampa Stadium and performed "The Star Spangled Banner", backed by the Florida Orchestra along with music director Jahja Ling, before 73,813 fans, 115 million viewers in the United States and a worldwide television audience of 750 million. The pregame program including Houston's performance of the national anthem was produced by Bob Best for the National Football League and televised live on American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in the United States. Because of the Gulf War situation, this marked the first time the Super Bowl would be telecast in most countries around the world. Outside of North America and the United Kingdom, the Super Bowl was broadcast for the first time in such countries as Australia, Russia, and most other countries. Houston's performance was later used as a music video of the song.

Great job with this, the remaster brought to life this gem of music that is good enough reason for the planet to have evolved us. @Whitney Houston Remastered, I Wish you would have acknowledged the person most responsible for this performance's amazing different sound, and deeper effect: arranger John Clayton. A jazz bassist who became an arranger, Whitney had just started working with him when she got the call to do the Super Bowl SSB, and she insisted on him. In 1992 black people were just becoming forward in the dominant white culture in the USA, and John, a black man, had not seen any black men before him have an arranging gig anywhere near that huge Usually the arrangement of the SSB sticks to 19th century harmony but John came from Jazz, the most American of art forms, and added dissonances gleaned from 20th century classical music and Stan Kenton arrangements. But as revolutionary as that was, his real genius move that changed everything is that the national anthem is a song in 3/4 time. John wrote this one in 4/4, and it had never been done that way before or and hasn't since (outside of anywhere I happen to be playing piano when the SSB is called for). It was a brilliant, radical and bold "Of course" sound that is the most genius of things because:P no. one. ever.notices (you didn’t until now I'd bet). This unnoticeable but radical move gave that tight-ass 17th century English back-country reel a complete makeover into an American sound, while it also gave whitney one extra beat per measure to widen her vibrato and resonate those glorious long notes or stick in that additional whistle-voice flourish on the word "free", and gave John Clayton an extra beat to stick in those startling and gorgeous substitute jazz chord changes that fit into 4/4 more naturally anyway, that together make this the most American of arrangements, and give it the fresh, and uniquely better sound this SSB has. John Clayton. Face it, ¾ is more corny, and modern American music is all in 4. Plus, WHITNEY, best singer on the planet at the time, going all in - no other SSB comes close. Holy crap. I'm a professional musician and huge music snob, and I STILL get goosebumps and tear up nearly every time, and I watch it several times per year certainly.
Hey, THANK YOU for this comment. I knew about the new 3/4 to 4/4 but I never knew the real story behind it. It's indeed ubiquitous that the singers get the most credit while the composer(s), and the other musicians get mostly no/very little visibility in their work. So thank you for this amazing story that also acknowledges these people.
@Jim Maneri I too want to thank you for the background information you provided. This performance always feels to me to be the birth of the masterpiece it always should have been-for all the reasons you have mentioned so eloquently.
Your mention of the successful choice to arrange it in 4 reminds me of the same decision made by someone-Do you happen to know who?-to take “Fly Me To The Moon” out of 3 and into 4. Both songs deserve to be in 4! In 3, they both sound musically directionless; in 4, they let us soar “among the stars”. Cheers and thanks again.
Very interesting indeed thanks!
Yes indeed. Piano player myself. Goose bumps and tears in 1991 AND today.
Unnecessary bashing of the past, the reason Whitney could do this was the foundational origins that were beautiful! The change was also beautiful, both were beautiful, past and present!! Bashing the past is bigotry and unacceptable.

My dad is a professional singer, choral teacher and minister. He said this was about as perfect an interpretation that could be performed. Impeccable execution and just the right amount of flair.
What I love most about this, and what I think makes it stand out the way it does, is that she didn’t do anything fancy or flashy. It’s just raw, incredible talent combined with flawless execution.
Utter perfection.

It was fancy and flashy. Whitney is so excellent that you didn't even notice😂

Absolutely hands down the best national anthem performance in history. I was born in '97 so I didn't get to experience this masterclass on tv, but I can imagine how well it was received back then. Weirdly enough, Whitney died on my birthday in 2012 😞
Her voice was 24k gold. Legendary performance
the thing about Whitney and what made her so great was how restrained she was. she knew how to hold back and knew exactly where the power should be and not. there are many singers that sing as well as her but her unique aspect was the power and volume she projected all while in perfect pitch control. She was the master of her instrument.
Absolutely this!!!!!
Spot on! She is all those plus she can emote so well too! To me she is still (and will always be) the best!
Her head voice was so gorgeous.
@@elleohai I think the original poster was referring to the belting and the use of head voice at “whose broad stripes and bright stars.”
She sung better than the Devil himself. It’s damn near impossible to sing this perfectly.
People were already applauding after she hit the extra note on “free” because no one had ever heard it sung like that before. Even new versions by pop stars today try to do it because she made it so iconic.
Most end up screeching/screaming in falsettos, squeks, light hv or oversinging free- making it pathetic and horrendous
Whitney's Free and brave notes are forever unmatched
Her tone, dynamics, coloratura, vibrato, stage presence and that POWER are second to none 😂🙌

How can she be smiling while hitting the high notes? Truly, no one is like her. Despite her struggles, I truly believe she touched the souls of many people through her inspiring hits, like ‘The Greatest Love of All’ and ‘One Moment In Time’ to name a few. You would always be remembered Whitney. You live in our hearts. 2022 and still crying!
Because this was Pre-recorded/Lipsynched. She could sing it really live though.
@@royalpanther6391 She was still singing though, the people on the grounds could hear her
I thought the same thing!!!
My Uncle was there as one of the sound guys during that time…..and he said he was no more then a few feet from her and he said he heard EVERY NOTE come from her ……he said I don’t care what the world says I heard that woman sing that song with my own two ears….every time he talks about being that close to her sing the national anthem he gets emotional
Wouldn't you smile if you were singing like that and just knowing you're nailing it.
Who else could get up in front of thousands in a white jumpsuit and hair band and just belt out those notes with such ease? No fuss no over the top theatrics just a voice so pure and rich that it just washes over you with such emotion. Rest In peace the indomitable the fabulous the greatest ever Whitney Houston we will never forget you ♥️
Unmatched!!! Whitney Houston had an incredible voice. That was effortless excellence! No one has even came close to this performance. Just play this every year. No need for anybody to bother. Y’all go head and focus on the halftime show. 🤣
She sings this so well and her voice control is sooooo good it looks like she was having fun showing you she is YES that good of a singer. RIP MRS HOUSTON
31 years later, and who has even come close to capturing the emotion and patriotism like Whitney did in this interpretation?! Girl no one, she literally set the Golden Standard, and few have met it, and none has surpassed it. A true legend.
Jennifer Hudson has come the closest. But even she is miles behind whitney.
Hands-down, the best rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner ever! They’ll never be another version to top this. They might as well enshrined this version as the a national treasure, and the official version of the American national anthem. It should be played at the Olympics and every American sporting event.
Everything. Everything about it was perfect. The LORD conducted this.
I always felt the same way too. They should!❤️
Yes we no longer need a live performance. This still gives me chills. Whitney Houston is unmatched
I just came here to compare to Stapletons performance. They both have things that I enjoy more so then the other. We all win by having the chance to listen to both.
@@ts6377 you’re joking right? 😂
The best performance ever of the National Anthem. In some radio stations in USA at noon they play Whitney’s
NOBODY has come close to duplicating her ferocious performance!! Some singers did fantastic jobs, but Whitney's rendition still ranks as the best. My goodness! Where does that 5'6" frame get that power?!?!
Nobody has even come close to Whitney’s performance of our National Anthem ❤
leann rimes and whitney
Whitney's version is the only version I get goosebumps from.
That's testimony to natural talent
What about Fergie?
@@greent16haven't heard that one, feed me
Kirstin Maldonado in a NCAA match. It's a capella song but her voice is awesome.
I'm British but this classic rendition of the US 🇺🇸 national anthem sung with vigour by the late, great Whitney Houston brings tears to me eyes! And I'm a true East Ender. Brilliant 👏 👏. Uk 🇬🇧
Beestoverever
As an American I just pray that the people of the world can get our respective governments in check. Almost none of us want to hate. Governments perpetuate it for Blackrock ⚫️, Vanguard, and State Street.
Almost none of us are true enemies.
Italian here.. the same cazzo
this really is just a classic moment in music history. I was so happy to find out my daughter's elementary school music teacher played this for her class one day. a beautiful woman and THE most beautiful voice. rip Whitney we love you. 🙏♥️
Indonesia here ❤
Not only the best vocal performances of an anthem, one of the best performances ever . God bless Whitney.
The best rendition ever!to be able to keep that pitch with the noise and all!!!!👍 raising from the dead 😊
I'm Italian, But this rendition of the US National Anthem is something hard to believe being sung by an human. I think she had the voice of god.
SMILING AS SHE'S SINGING, COMPLETELY EFFORTLESS!
OFF THE SCALE BRILLIANT ❤
Same thing I said. Effortless
That’s because it was pre-recorded! It’s well known.
This was like a warmup for her...vocals and power most singers would kill for.
Up in heaven whenever they play a sport she's singing this and everyone cheers even my mom who's in heaven now
RIP Mom
RIP Whitney Houston
I get instant chills when she hits those notes!!! Truly gave this a whole new dimension!! ❤ RIP Queen!!
