Royal Raag Darbari - Jor & Jhalla | Irshad Khan | Surbahar | Music of India

  • #darbarfestival | Irshad Khan plays the surbahar (bass sitar), using its thick, deep-toned timbres to explore Raag Darbari, harking back to when musicians played for kings at the royal court.
    Learn more about the music:
The surbahar’s deep-toned strings can bend upwards over an octave, allowing artists to explore the contours of a raga using only a single fret. Suited to the slow elaborations of dhrupad, it is large, heavy, and notoriously difficult to master. Here it is played by Irshad Khan, who hails from the illustrious Etawah (‘Imdadkhani’) gharana alongside greats such as Shahid Parvez, Vilayat Khan, and Imrat Khan (Irshad’s father). His ancestors gave shape to the modern sitar, customising the design and mastering gayaki ang (singing style). Irshad lives in Canada today, playing and teaching sitar and surbahar around the world.
Here he plays a heavily ornamented jhalla from Raag Darbari, described by musicologist Deepak Raja as being “the emperor of ragas, and the raga of emperors”. The word ‘darbar’ refers to to the royal courts of past ages, and it is easy to imagine Darbari’s majestic tones echoing across marble floors, bringing solemn relief to kings, diplomats, and warlords. The mood is grave, reverential, and often slow, blending lyrical passages with a precise microtonal geometry. Its optional ‘Kanada’ suffix denotes the raga’s likely origins in Carnatic music - some consider it to have been imported North by Mian Tansen in the 16th century.
It uses Asavari thaat [SRgmPdnS], with Re and Pa as the vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes]. Characteristic phrase resolutions include gmR and dnP, and the raga is often elaborated in mandra saptak [low octave]. Musicians often pause on Ga and Dha, ornamenting them with andolit [heavy oscillations]. It resembles the modern Carnatic Raga Natabhairavi, and the Western natural minor scale.
Recorded for Darbar on 4 Apr 2008, at the Phoenix, Leicester

If a few brief minutes of Irshad aren't enough…watch his full 55-minute performance of Raag Darbari Kanada in pristine HD on the Darbar Player, along with dozens of other captivating concerts: www.darbarplayer.com/videos/irshad-khan
We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

Indian classical music is always evolving and this is just another way to present Darbari which is an intense raag and can almost put you in a trance state. I've had images of battle scenes, dark forests while singing or playing this song and I've only just scratched the surface :-) At the end of the day its all about the expression of your emotions. It's probably once of the few Raags that you would attempt such presentation. Adana would be another one imo.

Irshad sahab has given a new dimension to the raaga I feel. It might not be the "classic" way to develop the raaga, but when have two musicians evolved a raaga in the same way! What is beautiful about this rendition is that usually Darbari slowly takes hold of the soul and by its grace charms its listeners... but here the raaga takes its audience by surprise and sheer forceful beauty. It opens the gates of our hearts and brings out the unsorted emotions there to cause a cathartic effect. Ever grateful for such music!

It's pouring Divine sorrow, watching our suffering with calmness as Gibran says it. Then it goes away to come again and goes away, until we learn from our mistakes. Then there's union with That. It's like waking up from a bad dream. And then we laugh at our self made suffering.
