Well, my original goal was to just watch all of the Best Picture nominees. I think I overshot it a little. Follow my Letterboxd: letterboxd.com/alecleaper/ Twitter: / alecleaper
Hey there, I got four movies left in this year's deathrace and I really enjoyed your recap! Was really surprised by your love towards Ala Khachuu, because it was also definitely my favourite movie in that category and I feel, it's rarely talked about.
Ala Kachuu is so underrated! From all of these anonymous ballots, it seems like there’s some underdog support for Please Hold, so it’s my tentative second place. Which movies do you have left? I might be able to refer you to some places to watch them if you’re having trouble locating them (Writing with Fire was especially tricky for me)
I very strongly disagree with a number of your opinions about these films (definitely do agree with many others), but I really enjoyed watching this very well-made video! Sincerely, Your newest subscriber
I’m well aware there are some hot takes here (I’ve especially been getting flack for Spencer) but hey, what’s the point of film discourse without some disagreement? I’m glad you enjoyed!
I saw CODA the day after it watched Best Picture. But the problem was that there were no subtitles so I had no idea what the deaf people were saying. I thought it was fine but of the nominees Spielberg's West Side Story should've won in my opinion. But strangely enough I think Best Picture should've went to Luca mainly because it was so likable and charming and the characters were likable, it was imaginative and creative and it was funny. Edit: But yes I have to give CODA another rewatch with subtitles this time. Who knows I might think it would be great. I certainly don't know.
Actually when Encanto won I got so angry. I was shouting f*ck that movie so much. I didn't think Encanto was that good. While the animation was beautiful, the songs were great and Bruno was an interesting character, I was let down by the movie because I found every other character to be underwhelming, boring and cliched and I found the story to be too predictable. And I found it to be not very funny. Once in a while John Leguizamo got a laugh from me but every other comedy moment felt awkward or sometimes a little bit of a groaner for me.
Nice video, I'm checking out your channel from the other Oscar video you made. Here would be my ratings of every film that I saw this year that was nominated (in order from most nominations to least): Best Picture Nominees: - The Power of the Dog: 7/10 - Dune: 9/10 - Belfast: 5/10 - West Side Story: 8/10 - King Richard: 6/10 - Don't Look Up: 4/10 - Drive My Car: 9/10 - Nightmare Alley: 8/10 - CODA: 8/10 - Licorice Pizza: 9/10 Other Multiple Nominees: - Being the Ricardos: 5/10 - Encanto: 7/10 - Flee: 7/10 - The Lost Daughter: 7/10 - No Time to Die: 7/10 - The Tragedy of Macbeth: 7/10 - Cruella: 3/10 - The Eyes of Tammy Faye: 6/10 - Parallel Mothers: 7/10 - Tick, tick, BOOM!: 7/10 - The Worst Person in the World: 9/10 Single Nominees: - Spencer: 7/10 - Luca: 7/10 - The Mitchells vs the Machines: 8/10 - Raya and the Last Dragon: 4/10 - The Hand of God: 7/10 - Ascension: 6/10 - Attica: 5/10 - Summer of Soul: 6/10 - House of Gucci: 5/10 - Free Guy: 6/10 - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: 6/10 - Spider-Man: No Way Home: 8/10 This year's lineup was honestly... kind of boring? Aside from Drive My Car, The Worst Person in the World, Dune, Licorice Pizza, The Mitchell’s vs the Machines, and to a lesser extent Nightmare Alley, CODA, West Side Story and Spider-Man: No Way Home, this whole lineup was somewhat lackluster at best, and at worst terrible. Here are some films I would definitely consider snubs: The French Dispatch for Original Screenplay, Score, Production Design, Film Editing, and Best Picture. Denis Villeneuve (Dune) for Director. Spencer for Score and Costume Design. Nicolas Cage (Pig) for Actor. The Humans for Adapted Screenplay, and Richard Jenkins (The Humans) for Supporting Actor. Cmon Cmon for Original Screenplay and Best Picture, as well as possibly Joaquin Phoenix for Actor. The Rescue for Documentary Feature. Catriona Balfe (Belfast) for Supporting Actress (Judi Dench had no business being nominated over Balfe). The Green Knight for Cinematography. A Hero (Iran) for International Feature. Renata Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) for Actress, and the film for Best Picture. Mike Faist (West Side Story) for Supporting Actor. Licorice Pizza for Film Editing. EDIT: Changed my ratings.
Here are my predictions to win: Best Picture: Dune, Nightmare Alley or West Side Story Best Director: Steven Spielberg- West Side Story or Jane Campion- The Power of the Dog Best Actor: Andrew Garfield- Tick, Tick… BOOM! Best Actress: Kristen Stewart- Spencer Best Supporting Actor: Kodi Smit- McPhee - The Power of the Dog Best Supporting Actress: Ariana DeBose- West Side Story/ Kristen Dunst- The Power of the Dog Best Original Screenplay: Adam McKay- Don’t Look Up/ Kenneth Branagh- Belfast Best Adapted Screenplays: Dune or The Lost Daughter (Tied) Best Animated Feature Film: Encanto/ The Mitchells vs The Machines (Tied) Best International Feature Film: Drive My Car Best Documentary Feature: Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) - Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent, and David Dinerstein Best Documentary Short Subject: The Queen of Basketball Best Live-Action Short Film: The Long Goodbye Best Animated Short Film: Robin Robin Best Original Score: Dune- Hans Zimmer/ Encanto- Germaine Franco Best Original Song: No Time To Die- Billie Eilish & Finneas O’ Connell Best Sound: No Time To Die Best Production Design: Nightmare Alley Best Cinematography: Dune Best Hairstyling and Makeup: Cruella/ House of Gucci Best Costume Design: Cruella Best Film Editing: Tick… Tick… BOOM! Best Visual Effects: Spider-Man: No Way Home or Free Guy or Shang-Chi and The Legends of the Ten Rings (Definitely Spider-Man: No Way Home. Marvel needs a chance to win for Best Visual Effects. They also should’ve won for Avengers: Endgame back in 2020, but the Academy just had to screw this up by announcing 1917 the winner) I really hope they won
I think Best Picture is between Power of the Dog as the nominations leader and CODA as the PGA winner. I agree with you in a lot of the below the line categories. I’m interested to hear why you’re predicting Nightmare Alley in Picture, I think it’s the least likely along with Don’t Look Up
Great video! Can’t wait to see what else you got planned for the channel
Thank you!!
Tick tick boom happened to be my favorite film of 2022 idk why, but I had fun lol
That’s great to hear! It’s definitely got its fans, and I absolutely had a phase of listening to 30/90 on repeat
I was not prepared for how upset I’d be at your Spencer take

The Green Knight would’ve been my personal best picture winner so I totally get rooting for something that wasn’t nominated!

I agree with a lot of those snubs; so many great performances/films missed out on deserved nominations!
THIS is 2022!!!
2022 Oscars, 2021 movies :)
Wild that you missed really some of the best movies in those years???
IKR! I've caught up with them since, though. Can't believe I missed Minari because I would've been rooting for it all season long.
