And thats what i keep saying over and over again…
Characterization wins oscars… that’s the only thing that matters to the academy.

    Is all about the makeup
    Over the performance

"Look at this great performance" = "Look at this great makeup and costume" is exactly why popular opinion about Oscars and acting performance in general should be totally discarded. Those damn popular memes of STILLS with actors in 6 different productions going "x always understands the assignment" as if they did their own character design.

2010: Colin Firth - Way prefer The Social Network, but Firth shows a lot more range in his performance.
2011: Jean Dujardin - Again, prefer Moneyball, but Dujardin is what made The Artist win over critics and Academy members. Clooney would be my runner-up, but I've never seen A Better Life.
2012: Joaquin Phoenix - I don't remember finishing The Master when it came out, but it's probably Phoenix's best-ever performance. Gotta rewatch it, but this seems like the right choice.
2013: Leonardo DiCaprio - I did love Matthew McConaughey in DBC, and I can see why he won. DiCaprio's performance has stood the test of time though, often seen as his best work.
    2014: Michael Keaton - Easy!
2015: Michael Fassbender - Another easy choice, one of my favourite-ever biopíc performances.
2016: Casey Affleck - Yeah, they got this right.
2017: Timothée Chalamet - One of the all-time great young performances.
2018: Christian Bale - Cooper is a close second, but Bale is so incredibly good here, it's a performance I couldn't really believe.
2019: Adam Driver - I don't mind Phoenix winning since it was his first time, but if he'd won for The Master, the easy choice would be Driver.
2020: Chadwick Boseman - Pretty split between Hopkins and Boseman. People are often going to link Boseman's name with that strange fiasco at the ceremony, which is a shame to his legacy. Plus, he more than deserved it, but I can see why people would vote Hopkins instead.
2021: Benedict Cumberbatch - The more nuanced performance. I also kinda hate how blatantly Smith tried to win an Oscar.
2022: Brendan Fraser - I would have preferred Colin Farrell win, but it is a fairly toned down performance. Fraser is a force of nature in The Whale, very hard to forget.

With all due respect, I disagree with some things.
For instance, you say "This should have been his Oscar win isnstead of Joker". Ok, I agree Phoenix could have won with The Master and sure 2019 was a strong year, but the Oscars aren't (shouldn't be) compensatory awards. If he gave the best performance in 2019 as well, he deserves the award as well.
Also, I get the feeling that you say that you're putting Pitt for Moneyball because you say liked the film. Or again, choosing Kaluuya over Chalamet because you like Get Out more than Call Me By Your Name. I don't think the quality of a performance depends by any means on the quality of its film.
Anyways, good video. I don't think any nominee could be consider any short of great, despite agreeing or not with the winner.

    @reecejennings9637 Před rokem +1

Excellent video with explanations for why you make or retain choices, and just great choices in general!!:
2010: Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) (But I do still hold the performance by Firth in high regard. I like King's Speech, not greatly, but it's a solid 7, but Firth is a superb performance imo)
2011: Brad Pitt (Moneyball) (Are you kidding me, this is his best performance to date. Absolutely alive with charisma and true showmanship as a performer, but it's so emotionally alluring too. The final shot of him in the car is some of the finest acting I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.)
2012: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) (I don't know why, I'm not crazy about this lineup anyway, haven't seen Phoenix or Washington, but I do think the other 3 are superb, although hard for me to get excited over. Cooper is a pretty great performance, however.)
2013: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) (DiCaprio rocks, McConaghuey is my instant runner up and one of the finest winners of any acting category this century. All well and good, but Ejiofor is giving one for the ages from start to finish, and transcending acting as we know it.)
2014: Michael Keaton (Birdman) (No need to even expand on why, it's just the one.)
2015: Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) (My favourite performance of the 2010s, I need not expand any further, but am happy to. Absolutely vibrant in a perfect marriage to the dialogue, and thunderous in his emotional explosivity, both on the surface and whenever the direction allows his subdued torment to show. A performance that revels in the demons of the character, both obvious and personal. Brilliant.)
2016: Can't comment as haven't seen enough of them, so I won't comment.
2017: Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread) (Somehow the best performance DDL has given imo, which is saying a lot. Absolutely on it with the comedy and balance of that with a true earnest tragedy. Chalamet is also exceptional, and would have been an all timer winner.)
2018: Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) (I also adore Bale in Vice, and (especially) Dafoe in Eternity's Gate. Mortensen is pretty great, but he's overshadowed by Ali, and Malek is being awarded for half a performance, something Audrey Hepburn was refused a nomination for. Malek's work is a good performance that makes for an absolutely tragic winner, especially when Cooper is going ahead and giving a performance also based in musicality to full effect, but also to an effect that is so emotionally shattering that I have been unable to forget the beauty of his torment since first seeing the film.)
2019: Adam Driver (Marriage Story) (A solid lineup, one of the best, yay for Pryce! Would have swapped DiCaprio/Banderas out for Egerton or Griffin Davis, but Driver is simply superb, and somehow the best part of a film that is one of the best of the 21st century. if his rendition of Being Alive alone isn't enough to convince you that Driver is one of the best actors working, I think you may have misplaced your taste and/or soul.)
2020: Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey) (Seems more and more out there to call him my winner as time goes on and more people rally behind Ahmed and Hopkins, but I still attest this would have been my winner if the circumstances were different, but how shocking to imagine an ill man bringing this much life and health to this character. Removing that from the equation, Boseman is still remarkable and giving one of my favourite performances in history, shattering through social and political ramifications of his character to unlock a darker and more brutal truth behind Levee than even the script seems to be searching for.)
2021: Benedict Cumberbatch (Power Of The Dog) (Can not comment on Washington or Garfield, but I like Smith a lot in his role, and I am actually in the camp of thinking Bardem is the strongest performer in his film, and the one who really sticks the emotional core the best. But this should have gone to Cumberbatch (or Hidetoshi Nishijima from DMC but I digress) who is playing with a viewer's expectations to uncompomising effect from the first scene until his tragic last.)
I am very passionate about my picks for a majority of my winners, but especially I do believe my winners for 15,17,19 and 20 are in that all time camp for me, like would have been top 10 winners.
    As for the actual winners:
    Yes to Firth.
    Meh to Dujardin.
Yes/Meh to Day-Lewis (ofc it's great, I just am not passionate)
    YES YES YES to McConaghuey
    Meh to Redmayne
    ---
    ---
Yes to Oldman, but only just. He does do exceptionally well in some scenes.
    NO to Malek, absolutely not.
Yes to Phoenix, but the Driver loss is the biggest tragedy in that decade.
Yes to Hopkins, but again, Boseman loss is tragic to me.
Yes to Smith, but I would have preferred others.

Come on! Adam Driver was fine in Marriage Story, but Joaquin Phoenix was unbelievable as the Joker. Easily one of the best performances I have ever seen and I think even better than Heath Ledger, reason being there was far more depth to Phoenix performance and he was actually sympathetic, a pretty brilliant turn.

  • @fromomelastocarcosa3575

Largely agree with your list and your rationales. Phoenix in The Master is the greatest screen performance of the Century so far and it is a travesty it never stood a chance given the overwhelming perceptual tidal wave of DDL as Lincoln by Spielberg.
My hatred of biopic wins means I wince at the Steve Jobs pick, but as you point out there were really no good choices that year - horrible set of nominees.
Biopic impressions garbage reduces from 8 to 1 or 2 on your list (depending on perception of the Pitt choice, given that he makes essentially no attempt at all to portray the actual Billy Bean and treats it as an original screenplay) is a big positive, but all round the choices are solid.

@@fromomelastocarcosa3575 this is a very idiotic comment. Biopic performances are some of the most scrutinized roles in acting. You need to get everything from their mannerisms, their way of speaking, and their facial expressions.

I think body transformations play a bit too much as the winning/deciding factor for a win. I think it's what you do WITH that transformation. Hot take but I don't think Matthew was all time great in dallas, he was good but not as good as leo. Lewis in lincoln was a complete transformation on top of an outstanding performance. And i think that Leo's revenant win was purely because of the physical toll and pain he went through (although he was good in it, he wasn't necessarily *acting* as much as wall street)

The only thing that bothers it’s when people say a performance is “fine”, “okay”. I think it’s pretentious coming from people that don’t act. Twitter is a bit annoying lately, because people rather hate than appreciate and that sometimes carries to Critics as well.

Ehhh I’d like to think that people understand that the actor they’re criticizing is a significantly better actor than them but can still have an opinion on it. @@poett8875 you totally lost my point. I meant there’s a tendency to shrug it off performances because we don’t like them, and we end up diminishing them. @@TheFilmDrunk My bad if it came across that you need to be something to have an opinion. What I meant, it’s that nowadays people have the tendency to diminish art, and act like it’s easy what they do, just because we didn’t liked. I personally don’t like the “it’s okay”, “it’s mediocre” attitude we have about everything when it comes to films. It’s just like when CODA won and people start saying was bad, mediocre, it’s just the tendency now. But I really like your content, and also don’t want to take what you do for granted.
