Excellent reading goals, Ryan! I absolutely love the idea of of opening a book every single day. It is manageable, without being too stressful. I hope to do something similar. My reading suffered quite a bit in 2018, but I had a lot going on in my life and I can relate to the mental health struggles you mentioned. The times I did read in 2018, though, I remember feeling so happy and so grateful that literature allowed me to escape my own headspace for a moment, an hour, or a few hours. My only resolution is to read more. I refuse to put a number on my goal. Reading makes me deliriously happy, and this was a truth I had forgotten, until 2018 reminded me. Happy reading!
Oh Ryan, I'm so sorry to hear about Dean and your grandmother. I'm sending a lot of light and love your way. I feel you on the mental low's this year. All we can do is attempt to tease some helpful life lessons out of it. A bit cliche, but there's some truth to it. Great goals this year!
Sorry for the loss of the people you love. Hope your year has been a great one so far! 💛
Ryan, thank you for being open about your struggles with anxiety and depression. I feel less alone because your videos have really helped me cope.
I'm mad at myself that i JUST found you, but i guess i can binge watch your videos now! Happy new year! Wish you the best, you seem like a good hearted person.
I like your goals! Good luck with your reading and writing in 2019, look forward to watching your videos.
Hey! I just found this channel. I just wanted to say i already really enjoy it and subscribed. Im sorry to hear about your step dad and grandma... 3 years ago my ex broke up with me the day i got the ring, my step dad died, my grandma died and then my grandpa died... I feel ya buddy. Its hard. I hope this year gets better! And i look forward to more of your videos!
Hi Ryan, beautiful person of the internet! Great to hear your list of goals and the 5 books you are set on reading. I want to read the three that you showed in your video as they have also been on my list for years and I haven't read them. I so hear you about life intervening and knocking you sideways sometimes. I am so sorry for the losses in your life. I know how hard that is. I have goals related to reading, writing and academic conferences. Abstract writing is happening! I also have exercise and other health goals. I am trying hard to rethink them and make them DOABLE, no matter what. Good thoughts. Fingers crossed, my friend.
I don’t do new year resolutions, but reading a book written by you is surely one for me. I am pretty sure it would be heartwarming much like your videos:) Happy New Year!
I won't set up a number of books to read as resolution mostly because in 2019 I'll be writing my graduation thesis and that will take some time and effort. However, I'd be very glad to borrow your suggestion and try to read something not university related everyday. My present self knows I'd thank my future self for this 👌🏻 thank you for showing another angle to look at things from! Happy new year Ryan ✨
you'll fly through Kavalier and Clay, best book ever!
as someone who also failed most of my new years resolutions, i’m glad to hear you talk about process rather than numbers! especially because i’m in school right now, it’s easy for me to forget that growth isn’t always linear and get caught up in unrealistic external achievements. my goal in the coming year is to read more nonfiction and also to finally read Lord of the Rings because i’ve been putting it off for literal years
Good luck for your goals. I'm doing relaxed reading goals of 70 books prioritizing the ones I already own and finishing series. Aside from that I am going with my go-to resolutions of getting back into running, losing a few Kg on the way and eating better...I never fully fail but neither fully succeed, so keeping those goals until I do :D
Good luck with your goals!!!
Sad to not see 2666, but I’d read any of those books with you. When you read Blood Meridian, you will feel a power in writing like nothing else. Lahiri is magnificent. I teach the title story every year. House of Leaves is mind blowing. So experimental and cinematic. I loved it. Announce these and do close readings!
Sorry for your loss. Great goals. Good luck with these!
If I finish the book I’m reading tonight I’ll have read 24 books this year. I’ve decided that for 2019 I’m setting the bar low. I’m saying I only want to read one book in 2019 because I know I’m capable of reading more. I like your idea of opening a book daily. I think I’ll try something along the lines of that and see how it goes.
Have a happy New Years!
Nice goal! I like the idea of pushing yourself in a way that doesn't involve a numbers game -- something I quit doing last year. I started to realize that numbers-oriented goals have a certain quality to them that I really dislike. Almost like you're reducing the act of reading to mere consumerism, as if the point is to keep on gobbling up more and more and more. I think it discourages long books, re-reads and more difficult literature that requires you to slow down. Anyhow...House of Leaves is crazy, and a ton of fun, and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is one of my all time favorites! I hope you enjoy them both! As for me, I've been on a big Victorian kick recently (Dickens, the Brontës, and Henry James in particular), and I imagine that will continue for a bit. I'd also like to check out more Zadie Smith, Richard Powers and William T. Vollmann this year and, if I have time, I might try to finish off my last remaining Pynchon novels, too (Vineland and Mason & Dixon).
I love your channel.
I’m very sorry for your losses; that can really throw you into a spin. I think you did the right thing for you by opting to spend more time with your loved ones.
I’d like to finish the second half of Moby Dick (third complete reading); read Ulysses (first attempt); read War and Peace (second try), and...House of Leaves. It was a Christmas present and looks intriguing.
I think you’ll love both the Lahiri and Kavalier and Clay. They’re both wonderful.
Great goal Ryan! Very inspiring! I also have some of my own:
- I wanna read more.
- I wanna write more (I want to finish my 9th book and write more for my blog).
- I wanna run more, maybe do the Copenhagen Marathon this year.
I wish for a great year 2019 for everyone!
I love this reading goal! I set my goal for 75 books last year and I also read in spurts but still didn’t come close to the number. Consistency is important!
Hope you get to House of Leaves, I just bought it and have wanted to read it for a while. I'm a slow reader but want to finish it hopefully this year. Be very interested to see what you think of it. My condolences for any and all personal tragedies you've endured, Ryan.
2017 was the year I started reading more, and by the end of it I read 10 books. My goal in 2018 was to double that and I just finished my 28th book this year! In 2019 I might try to read around 40. I lost a bunch of reading time this year because of my mental health too...always good to see other people having the same issue, it makes it feel less lonely
Hey Ryan, have you read Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf? I feel that if you haven't - you really should. Listening to your goals - especially your reading goals - made me think of this book. I'm not going to spoil anything regarding that book but I feel as you should really read it and not pressure yourself with goals.
100 books in 1 year, wow. That's a high bar dude lol. Good luck!
I think I’ll read house of leaves too, this year. I tried last year but failed hehe
"what is Jan. 1st but than just an arbitrary date?" somehow I like this!
Sorry to hear about your stepdad and your grandmother. the only reading goal I have is reading the 11-volume Story of Civilization and Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past (all 7 volumes). Any other book that gets read is extra.
how did it go in 2019?
I really appreciate this video & I’m going to try to frame my reading and writing goals similarly. For me, though, number goals do help - so I’m thinking 50 books next year, since that’s how many I read this year so it won’t really stress me out as a goal.
My other resolutions are less mindless scrolling on the Internet, getting back into running (ever since moving to a city and living in an area of it where it’s not really safe to run outdoors.....I’ve been slacking. I’m going to join a gym for the first time) & calling my friends on the phone more often.
Also, sorry to hear about your losses and difficulties this year. 2018 was rough to many of us but I’m optimistic for 2019.
Blood Meridian is great. Handmaids tail isnt worth the time. The other books are terrific. I want to do a collab with you. Check out my Joyce series and see if you want to discuss books. Might motivate us both!
