Strasburg Rail Road - Norfolk & Western 475 Steam Train

- Strasburg Rail Road Company 4-8-0 Mastodon 475 operates the regular hourly excursions based out of Strasburg, PA.
The 475 is a 1906 product of the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia Pennsylvania for the Norfolk & Western Railway. 475 is currently the only operating 4-8-0 in the United States. The 475 operates the excursion from the East Strasburg depot, eastward to Leaman Place Jct and return, a 45 minute round trip.
The SRC is often heralded as one of the world's premier steam tourist rail lines and maintenance facilities, and for good reason. It operates multiple steam engines regularly between February and December, and often runs two steam trains a day during the summer.

N&W's Ms had an interesting cab layout, the engineer stands on the tender more so than the cab itself! It's an interesting configuration and holds a most impressive appearance.

I know this video was years ago now! But I have to say, that whistle is just beautiful! I’d say it’s my 2nd favorite whistle 475 has worn. I think the 8 inch hooter and that “3 chime I think” are the best whistles.

Wow! Amazing! Thats the first close up footage and cab footage I've seen of an engine at strasburg! I've seen 475 twice, 89 once, and 90 once. Now I'm waiting for 7312 to be rebuilt and 39 to be restored. I was lucky to catch 90 on june 9. I got footage of it at cherry hill, riding, and many other things, but it won't be uploaded for a while though. Once again great job!

Fun fact, at 0:26 that was the original whistle audio for PRR #7002 in this Strasburg railroad roblox game. Since then the whistle has been changed in game.

LIRR 39's PRR 3 Chime
What is the intermittent clanging that occurs in time with the rotation of the drive wheels? It makes it sound as though something is loose. Or is this normal for an M class?
What speed would you say 475 attained in this video and how does that compare to the typical operating speed of this locomotive in its prime? Was this engine capable of attaining 60 or 70 mph?
The clanging noise you hear is the engine's drive rods and/or valve gear. I can't say for sure which component in the running gear exactly is making noise as I do not and never have worked with the engine, but from experience with other engines that sort of noise most often comes from the main rod or cross head.
The clanging is particularly loud in this video. It isn't evident on other videos of the same engine or on any other videos of steam locomotives. Must be a maintenance item.

On second thought, might be a microphone directivity phenomenon, meaning the mic will only register the sound if it is aimed just right. If it's aimed somewhere else, the sound isn't evident. Okie dokie.
Not in this case, the mic used is a stereo mic. I have filmed a lot of other videos of the engine where it is equally audible, and it is that audible in person.
Not hearing it on any other videos. Not to that extent. Very softly. Most of the sound is "chugging" of the steam pistons.

Strasburg switches the whistles out on occasion, seems to be most often on 89 and 475.
That’s more of a Branchline railroad to me.
It’s advertised as America’s oldest shortline. At only 4.5 miles, it fits the bill.
Would it be awesome if 1251 and 1187 could be double-heading together for a Reading Steam reunion special one day? No doubt about it but I think 1251 would make a great operated tank steam locomotive, it's in great condition and nothing can go wrong about it! I think it would be awesome one day if 1251 could possibly ride the rails again.

@@allis-chalmersb-10 No, 475 was 475 on the N&W. You're likely thinking of 382, a well photographed sister to 475 which is long gone. 475 has masqueraded as 382 on several occasions in recent years.
Thank you for correcting me. 475 still basically is 382 because they were both the same type of train operating at the same time on the same railroad.
