When Scott McTominay plays for Scotland he is a goalscoring leader. His seven goals helped secure Euro2024 qualification and placed him joint fifth top scorer.
But he plays a different role for Manchester United. JJ Bull explains how Scott McTominay plays for Scotland, and whether he could replicate that style for Man Utd.

I think what also separates McTominay from other midfielders is his natural confidence. He can mess up 10 times trying a pass but still has the confidence to keep trying it for the one time it comes off. At the top level, that sort of confidence either just doesn’t exist, is forced out of players by managers and coaches or it is within the very best players e.g. De Bruyne, Bernardo, Odegaard.

The notion that not-technical = defensive really annoys me. Passing is not all of football. McTominay has never been a DM or a CB but he keeps getting played there, when he's so clearly an AM who offers more in running, pressing and goal threat from cut backs/crosses/set pieces than someone who's gonna keep possession or create loads of chances.
As many have said, he'd be great for Moyes at West Ham but IMHO he's integral to Man Utd. Home grown, great mentality, scores goals, keeps running.

I've known this watching him play way back in 2017/18. Long story short, he is best as a box-to-box. He is now better grasping when to make late runs and when to stay back. This is why he's scoring goals. Late runs into the box is very hard to defend against but it is also a two-edged sword. His position in a defensive shape would be open so the team is vulnerable to a counter when he does make a late run-in. Man City, Barca and Real are all vulnerable to the same thing which weaker team exploit by using a lopped sided low block and leaving a quick forward on the side of the midfield that pushed up. Now this is not without remedy. Teams put their full backs in an underlap position, like an additional MF, rather that out wide, to cover that late running midfielder (like TAA for Liverpool).

Erikson lacks the physicality to play that deep role, bruno lacks the composure to play in a midfield role, both bruno and erikson can be used in the advanced midfield or number 10 role to be the creative outlet, they should not be playing together rather than used as per the situation
mct can be the sub player when u need the physicality but when u need to control the game and have more possesion he clearly isnt the player,
the whole video explanation was good but you have to understand that for scotland the manager really doesnt have many options, so he trying to make best of what he has
at utd we have plenty of midfield options, problem is most of them dont gel together and we currently dont have a planned system in place, we have casemiro - mct - erikson - mount - amrabat - dvb - bruno, but we dont know which is the best combination, then there are young players like hannibal - mainoo, unless we put down a proper system in place we wont be able to find the working midfield,
eth just has to put his foot down and demand the players to play a certain system, the players who can fit the system should stay, rest can leave, there is literally no point in chopping and changing the tactics everytime we have an injury crisis, we look for short term fixes and it causes issue with the long term plans,

    My 2cents on McT!!!
*I always thought the best way to get the most out of McFred was to play a 4-4-2 diamond.
*Rooney suggested an interesting idea before the last / last to last Manchester derby - to a play a 4-2-3-1 with McT and Fred as the "wingers" - in a very narrow shape - which kinda reminded me of the City team of Mancini - with Silva - Nasri - playing as wingers / wide 8's.
*I strongly believe that Sir Alex would have found a way to get the best out of McT + Fred + James.

McTomminay is an O'Shea, Fletcher and Anderson type of midfielder which is a valuable squad player who doesn't mind being on the bench and filling in specific roles when needed. It's clear as day they need a ball progressing midfielder who is comfortable receiving the ball from his CB's which is why ten Hag had/has such a hard on for de Jong. They'd be much better off using McTomminay as a goal scoring option off the bench when they're chasing a win and blooding Mainoo into a first team regular like they did with Garnacho last season.

As a United fan, I love McTominay, but almost feel he's probably better off elsewhere. He's perfect for a team where midtable is a good finish. If I was a team like Palace or Nottingham, I'd shell out for him and build the team around him. As is, I think United are best keeping him unless they get a really good offer. He's handy for continental registration rules.
I'm glad he's in decent form. Hopefully Ten Hag keeps working towards a system that allows Scotty to score.

5:36 disagree. Eriksen doesn't have the legs or physicality and losing the ball close to the goal is a sure fire way to get over run in midfield. Even losing the ball up the pitch, McTominay doesn't always track back. McTominay staying up exposes Eriksen or Casemiro or anyone else that is playing on their own in the middle. We keep getting ripped apart through the middle. The defence equally is exposed.

Always thought it, Box to box old school - not an out and out Ball winner. He can pass a ball long range, which should be utilised more, in my opinion. First player at the club i've seen since Rooney and Scholes that can pass a ball long range - just has a 6/10 on it, whereas Rooney 8/10 and Scholes 11/10
He doesnt fit the ETH philosophy long term and no surprise he was touted to leave. I hope he doesnt, he plays with an extra 10% because of the Man Utd youth route.

In FM terms he’d be a Segundo Volante. I’m a bit dubious about pairing him with Eriksen in midfield though, at least with teams on par or stronger than United. They would leave the defence unshielded and that was why we brought in Casemiro and Amrabat.
The plan could work for weaker sides that defend deep though, or who just don’t have the attacking quality.
He could also be used as a box to box with Eriksen or Mount beside him and a dedicated DM behind him; it would be like the midfield of Matic, Herera and Pogba, which won us a few trophies.

The real thing this video tells us is that Steve Clarke is a better tactician, and better at setting up his players, then Ten Hag is - and Clarke doesn't have the 'luxury' of being able to buy players.
Also, for people talking about McTominay's technical limitations - most top class players will have mental, physical and technical skills. When manager's then need to fill out their squad with players who have limitations, then technical skills are usually the least important.

5:35 would allow the opponents to bypass the midfield, wouldn't it? The midfield getting overrun has been the issue for United this season imo, Casemiro hasn't been able to replicate what he did last season and Eriksen can't play the role of DM in the above formation because he's a creative passer similar to Bruno and he isn't fast or physical enough to command the midfield, although I maybe wrong as I am not a big football expert or something.

Honestly should be an inverted winger the way he plays. I’m build up you can use him how Newcastle use Dan Burn, trying to pass out but it the press is on they can send it long and wide where he will win majority of the headers against any fullback he faces. Then in the attacking halve he can come inside towards the box and allow a full back to occupy the wide area. This way you don’t sacrifice in the midfield in terms of quality on the ball

Mctominay has never been an above average footballer. He’s terrible on the ball and terrible passing the ball, and doesn’t make good decisions either. His style is good enough for a bottom half of the premier league club that defends most of the game and has a few chances throughout the game like a Palace Fulham or West Ham, that has been and always will be his style
