I love watching this. Pipe drumming you have no choice. I had jazz experience and corps drumming, but pipe drumming... Everytime I pick up sticks to this day, thirty years, I pick them up traditional. I was taught matched and on a set will go back, but ... I love traditional. I love the feel of it, and I'm a lefty so I like it more. You can crack it and do a lot.

I've worked on my left hand traditional grip always for a long time. In a right-handed grip I favor my left hand so much that now my right hand sucks!! For real!! I find I now have to develop my right hand more to catch up to my left in the traditional grip!! Go figure. So now I'm always looking for the right hand techniques. I know it sounds silly but it's true!! Thanks for the help buddy. It's always good to share what we know. 🙃🥁

You are a master! I've watched your playing clips which are fabulous, but you have helped me to get a handle on how to play traditional grip that is not only comfortable for me, but makes sense. Keep on preaching the truth, and someday I hope to get a Skype lesson with you.

I as a jazz drummer prefer to
use traditional grip over matched. Although I do use matched grip from time to time. I have some trouble playing a left handed one hand roll as my wrist doesn't really move that much. I use a push pull method when doing it but I can't play it very fast.
I want to found my own band and play charts.
I've been playing for about 20 years. I love Buddy Rich
and this video is helpful to jazz drummers who use traditional grip.

Amazing stuff my friend! I've been looking for a vid like this. To use my index finger or my middle finger or my thumb!?? I've been digging and digging and now I finally know what to practice. I'm going to use my thumb (for single stroke rolls)...nothing gets in the way and you're right where you need to be when you want to play anything else!
    God love ya!
    Thanks a lot!

This is perhaps one of the best videos on CZcams about the traditional grip. I have trouble making the thumb and the index work in unison though. Does these two have to touch forming a cross the way many of the other tutorials on traditional grip teach? This is in regard to playing basic single strokes. Thanks.

Wonderful. Thank you so much. Best left hand technique video EVER!
So, if you had kept going, from the point at which you said that you keep the wrist motion the same, but the stick goes higher when you remove the index finger....
Basically, so you can do accents just by adding or removing the index finger right?

Is the left hand fulcrum supposed to be a little higher than the fulcrum on the right hand, because your right hand fulcrum seems lower on the stick--than your right hand?
I have Vic Firth sticks, and the fulcrum for my left (and right) hand is between the flag and the 'H'; but slightly covering the H.
This is something I've been puzzling over since I started playing traditional (6 months ago). Buddy Rich had his left fulcrum very high on the stick. But Jojo Mayer keeps his fulcrum a fair amount lower on the stick.
If anyone has some advice/suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks... for me it seems as I trigger my index finger to throw the stick down .... the stick does not travel at a 90 degree angle to the drum head... just the motion of moving the index finger towards you makes the stick not travel up and down but at an angle toward my body... driving me nuts!!! Any suggestions? thx, Dave

I'm switching over to traditional grip because the best drummers in the world all have better control, speed and more techniques.
I watched Ted Mackenzie, but like I told him when i called him, I need to take lessons with a human right there watching me so i
don't do something wrong or develop bad, wrong habits. So, how is it possible to learn the correct way to learn traditional position when you
are not here to see what i'm doing every second?
