Amazing technique. I became friend with an american drummer from LA in the 70s as I was touring Tunisia with the Tabarka festival. He shown me ways to practice this. This guy was not as fast as Ramon but he was damn fast. He was touring too, drumming with a latin fusion band from the US. I have practiced this, in and out since and it changed my playing to the best. But I never truly focused on it. To get to such speeds... rent a hut on a beach in Thailand for ten years and only take your pad and sticks. Don't come back before you're done! This is hard work man! You've all my respect Ramon..

Yes absolutely, if one asks me I think very few people actually realize how insane Ramon's playing really is, especially with the push pull. He's a phenomenal artist as far as musicality goes & with the next level technique he's in a league all by himself! Another thing to is that in another vid Ramon says he's been practicing/using the push pull for 20+ years! That's what he's sooo proficient with it, to have the capability with push pull like Ramon take multiple years to master, I've been practicing push pull for around 7+ years and barely can push 16th notes @ 130-140bpm. I've been more consistent with practicing the technique the past 2 years which has been a big help. Therefore unless one is literally practicing this technique for 30min+ every day for years on end, to get to the level Ramon is at will take extreme persistence & patience, and even with serious dedication it will take years! With that being stated, I still find it incredibly inspiring and hope to one day be able to do what Ramon does and more, all the best to all the drummers/artists out there! 💯🙌

I don't at all think your genes are what's limiting you. I think it would help you to watch and listen to the video more. Try to be sure you are doing exactly as he does. Keep in mind the importance role of gravity in this technique. Try hard to utilize gravity maximally. Notice the slight change in hand-wrist angle. I think early learning on this is best done with a soft roll as it will help you more easily learn the feel of the physics of what is happening that makes this workable. Most people probably can't be as awesome as Ramon with it, but I feel certain you can do better than you have so far...technique.

This is very helpful and empowering. I've been working in this direction and this gave me a great visual that I can use my brain's "mirror neurons" to teach my body to do it. Thanks! I truly believe that we also learn drumming subconsciously as we see other drummers execute things we have not thought to do. A video like this is great proof of that. I noted, too, that it's not just the fingers lifting, but in a subtle way, the entire forearm working behind the hand. Great stuff.
