    I've only recently noticed that BR would switch between traditional and matched grips while soloing. And yet, he would piss all over matched grip in interviews, equating it with the hated rock drumming.

    • @0Ploxx
      @0Ploxx Před 2 měsíci

      He softened up on it towards the end of his career, though before matched became commonplace in rock, he considered it a valid technique

    See, now I stayed away from that first tec. because I see Buddy lifting his arm with his shoulder to keep it level. You are dead on with your explanation and it makes sense. You look and sound exactly the way I see and hear buddy doing this so now I realize that instead of twisting the wrist to get out of it he lifts his arm, but you are correct, he has to be doing that. I wish to get your take on his whip cream tec. I do it but it get's out of control too fast for me. Even when I simulate his body movements. I can't keep the same size circles.

    I've worked on my left hand traditional grip always for a long time. In a right-handed grip I favor my left hand so much that now my right hand sucks!! For real!! I find I now have to develop my right hand more to catch up to my left in the traditional grip!! Go figure. So now I'm always looking for the right hand techniques. I know it sounds silly but it's true!! Thanks for the help buddy. It's always good to share what we know. 🙃🥁

    Man, that is cool how you can do that. My left hand is horrible and my right hand is not much better. It sucks cause I can learn Independence and can do some complicated grooves, but just not very fast. It's not for a lack of practice either. I just have fingers that don't work very well. Thanks for the video...that looks to me like what buddy is doing. Have you ever seen anybody that can do those rudiments with the speed and precision of Buddy?

    @loucontino4804 Před 3 lety

    Great! The 3’s, 5’s and 7’s make what Buddy did almost an illusion that his left hand was cruising right through. But those right hand hits give that left hand just enough rest to come back at it again to sound continuous. This is well done cause Buddy solo’d in this fashion a lot.

    Rating somebody the best in the world is an impossible task. There are so many that are so good at their own style of play. But I would also agree that Buddy Rich is the best of all time behind the kit. That we know of.

    A great example of this technique is when Buddy performed it on the chart Three Day Sucker. He keeps a steady single stroke roll for a while all the while filling it in with bass drum beats and cymbal crashes. Just incredible.

  • @jameskerr7439
    @jameskerr7439 Před 3 lety

    Just how I always thought of his technique. Friend in school taught me different hand exercises to improve motor muscles. Different grips. I change my grip as I play. Depends on song. Traditional, matched, and French grip. Faster cymbal work, more fingers. Play hard and loud, tighter grip and use wrist. I also learned to keep sticks in playing position on snare. Not raising sticks real high. Play slower, use a higher rolling motion. Swing the cymbal ride. I cannot stand how many drummers just hit cymbals straight on and hard! You glance them. Too expensive to crack or kill the cymbal sound. Cymbals need technique too. I wish I learned more open stick playing. I am left footed, right handed also. Good tutorial!

  • @jerrylawrencedrums8224

    I really do not see the need to play a trap kit/ drum set using traditional grip. The grip your teaching was used when the drums were hung on a strap over the shoulder and the head was about 90° out from the player, have you ever noticed how buddy put that weird slant on his snare away from his body? I like Buddy Rich so don't get me wrong here I had to play traditional grip waaaaay back in high school, I ditched it the day I graduated and yes I can do the wind machine just fine using match grip. Good Job though.

    • @stanislouse4168
      @stanislouse4168 Před 3 lety

      @@stanislouse4168 man that's awesome, I would love to see his set. Im not knocking any one for using traditional grip, I usually put an extra floor tom on my left ( im a right hand player) for extra lows on our punches and traditional grip for me is not ergonomically correct I seem to have more power using match grip but hey that's my weak spot i guess. . we all have em.

    Neil Peart did a nice rendition of traditional grip during his solos and I think he used the first technique you showed ( at around 2:09). I always wanted to play that way with my left hand. I can hold the stick with traditional grip but I have no speed control like you show here using traditional grip. I need to practice that more. It looks pretty cool when it's done right!
