The formula of water is H₂O, so because there are two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom in water, and twice as much hydrogen is produced as oxygen, this means the formula is H₂O. Twice as many hydrogen molecules are produced compared to oxygen. A Hofmann voltameter electrolyses acidified water. This is dilute sulfuric acid. Hydrogen ions are reduced at the cathode. Hydroxide ions are oxidised at the anode.
