- What Is Electrolysis | Reactions | Chemistry | FuseSchool
Electrolysis is electrical current flow through a liquid which causes chemical changes. The liquid can be a molten ionic compound or aqueous solution. The liquid will contain free-flowing positive ions and negative ions. The positive ions are called cations, and the negative ions are called anions.
Electrodes are submerged in the liquid (electrolyte solution) and connected to an electrical cell. The electrons will start to flow in the wires and this will cause one electrode to become positively charged (the anode) and the other negatively charged (the cathode). This has an immediate knock-on effect in the molten liquid, and the ions in it. The positive ions in the liquid (electrolyte) are attracted to the negative electrode (cathode). The negative ions in the liquid (electrolyte), is going to be attracted to the positive electrode (anode). This is because opposite electrical charges attract. When the ions meet the electrodes, electron exchange happens and this triggers a chemical reaction. Remember that electrolysis can also take place in ionic solutions as well as molten compounds. The more concentrated the solution, the greater the ion flow rate. Ion flow rate can also be increased by increasing the potential difference or voltage across the cell.

Thank you so much. This was so helpful. My chemistry teacher kind of rushed over the beginning of electrochemistry and electrolysis so when he moved on I was still confused about the structure of the beaker and power supply and why the ions flowed the way they did. This video connected all the dots for me.

Hello! I am a Chemistry teacher and I was looking for interesting videos to show to my lecture group next week. I know FuseSchool channel is one of the best out there!
For this particular video, I noticed a tiny error at around 2:14 min. The battery is placed the wrong way around with respect to the movement of electrons. (Same animation mistake at 5th minute)
The battery is correct at 3:30min though. :-)

The anode is also mistaken for the positive side and vice versa at 4:43

Thank you. Great video. Please note "current is the movement of charge". Perhaps consider the equations: and the relationship a charge has to an electric field as a mass to an acceleration field (both equations have the same form and were created by Albert Einstein see the charge - distance, and the mass - distance business. 'Charge' does not exist just like mass does not exist. Charge is introduced to an electric field and a force V is caused or appears somehow. Just as mass is introduced to an acceleration field and force F is caused or appears somehow. Electrical force and mechanical force are the only things we can sense or perceive they exist. Otherwise mass has no effect and charfe has no effect and we will never know they were there - hence their 'non existence'. Electrons exist. These little ( - ) charged particles flow as they are FORCED to flow by the charge/ electric field product; force (V). Electrons are particles from the mass/acceleration field business. Electrolysis means splitting by electricity. An electricity is applied to separate an ionic compound when it is molten or dissolved. There is a battery operated between the positive and negative electrode. Positive will attract the negative and negative will attract the positive during the process of electrolysis. At the down portion there will be electrolyte. For the main attempt of electrolysis, it should made of ions and it have to be molten or dissolved so, the ions are free to move. The positive calles anode and the negative one called cathode.
