  • Electrolysis is a process where you use electrical energy (electricity) to make a chemical reaction happen that wouldn't happen otherwise. Electrolysis is often used to break a chemical compound down into the elements that make it up. Here, we'll look at the electrolysis of water into hydrogen and oxygen, and the electrolysis of sodium chloride into sodium and chlorine. In electrolysis, electrons get pushed by a battery into the cathode (the site of reduction), and they get pulled by a battery from the anode (the side of oxidation).

    I'm going to be honest... Whenever I watch a chemistry video, I always click off within 4-5 minutes, it just gets so boring. But with this guy, I didn't even notice that I had watched a 30-minute video talking about Electrolysis without any pause. This guy has to be the best teacher I've seen. Keep it up :)

      Hey Tyler,
      I understand that there are 2 hydrogen molecules for every oxygen molecule in H20 but why would the volume of hydrogen be twice the volume of oxygen? Doesn't oxygen have a larger molecule size, so it takes up more space (and therefore more volume)?

    Well done! My son got a chemistry kit for Christmas and the first experiment was electrolysis of water into hydrogen and oxygen. The kit had almost no explanation of the chemistry and this was a lovely supplement to a fun experiment.

    I have been searching for videos on CZcams that explain electric chemistry but I have found nothing useful of them. And fortunately, I found your video and I quickly said this video is gonna provide me with as many information as I want to learn.

    Sir, I don’t know if u know the English education system but at the end of year 11 (10th grade) we do a national exam called GCSE on each of the compulsory subjects plus 3 more optional subjects. You sir have saved my Chemistry GCSE cus my teacher weren’t making the cut!

    After watching this video I think I'll never confuse between oxydation and reduction again.
    your way of explanation is amazing! I always felt that chemistry is hard and I can't understand it, but now I see that it's easy and enjoyable.

    Thanx alot sir! This helped me a lot during my paper.. I always use the stories u tell and that totally works in my case..thnxx a lot.. just cuz of u I got A grade in chemistry. .. I wish i was ur student..I really need a professor like ya!
