Where do electrons live in atoms? They live in energy levels or shells, which are varying distances from the nucleus, and can hold varying numbers of electrons. The most important electrons in an atom are the valence electrons, which are in the outermost energy level or shell. We'll look at how to determine the number of valence electrons in an atom, based on which column it is in on the periodic table.
Chemistry is such a colorful subject and its too bad that its typically taught in such a technical manner.
This guy truly understands and appreciates the magic behind chemistry and it shows in the way he teaches. All science should be taught in this way. Feynman would be proud.
Nothing but respect.
I respectfully disagree with you but probably because I had an awesome chem teacher I think he goes way to slow and I watched this video expecting a somewhat high school level description with orbitals and things that have a level of complexity to them like metallic bonds and electron clouds but I got the stuff that I learned in seventh grade which left me very disappointed.I do agree that chemistry is a very colorful subject and love it just thought he could be much faster and not so basic.
Its not that its basic, its that he is actually teaching instead of just rushing and not thinking about the student's thought on it. This is better than reading an article she found online
It’s good

Wrong! The influence of Alcohol is Colorful. Quantum mechanics should be taught with the aim to oppress and subjugate the simpleton. Right? Or is alcohol very colorful,😵. Yay go lithium crystals!
Are people here like me? I have a test tomorrow.
My exam is in a month but I like to be prepared :P
*****
Lol guys my exams are next week now :O
So far my marks have been all above 90% for the most part so I am happy :D
Lol i have a final exam tomorrow
lmao yup

I am an old teacher and I just learned from you how to improve my classes. Thanks.
us students appreciate when teachers are willing to still want to improve their skill. TY !
Students will learn and enjoy your classes alot more when you make them fun and also appreciate the fact that you do that.
I would do anything to make you my actual chem teacher at school.
me too,my Chemistry teacher sucks :(
+Stephanie - me too, he's a great teacher... And a good looking one too, lol, so in any case, he's much easier to listen too ... and although he moves at the same speed as my teacher does it would seem my teacher moves way too fast just because he teaches everything in its most dense forms and so on... I mean, this Tyler Dewitt guy, he's just great because its not like he slows anything down but he definitely simplifies some things that don't need to be taught in such a complex sounding matter, thats just trying to sound smart... I mean, Idk, I believe a good scholastic journal doesn't make it's readers feel stupid, and a good professor is the same way... don't try to impress us, try to break it down and simplify it to a sense that we may quickly take grasp of and begin to understand as students, and in the long run when we someday look at complex problems/situations/tests, and have the ability to think them through as though they are simple, clean cut, organized, ideas like so ^^^, We'll look back and thank you for being such a good teaher/professor.
+Stephanie Tyler DeWitt is THE REASON why I am passing chemistry in community college, where contact hours are few and self-study is essential. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
SAME.
Stephanie agree
This man made me pass my final exam with a 91 and I was failing chemistry! WE NEED MORE TEACHERS LIKE HIM
I have over 40 absences in chem and my final is in two days, your giving me hope I don’t want to re do a class

This video moves so slow. Slow enough for me to understand!!!! People who catch on faster, may find themselves skipping forward a little bit, but it's nice to be able to follow along at a nice slow pace! 10/10!
Paul Valdez yup!😎
Paul Valdez ya
i just don't skip but increase its speed as i may not leave an imp. part

KWT .. Agreed. That was nicely done. I could most likely keep up in this guy's classroom.
I love way he talks and teaches everyhting. Keeps me interested in a boring topic
and makes a boring topic interesting!
me too
Chemistry is NOT boring!! It is just the way people and teachers teach it. They make it seem boring or maybe you just have a philistinal mindset.
@@serotonin9218 why are you getting so defensive?
It's amazing how Tyler teaches chemistry. The amount of effort and time he puts into these videos make chemistry my favorite and my most exciting class. You've made my and others year.
I love him and the organic chemistry tutor
to be honest everytime my teacher teaches im like lost (sometimes) but then i come here and im like OHHH. lol i wish you were my teacher. Keep doing what you do it's very helpful and much appreciated. Im watching your videos to study for a test
i luv you
The best instructor in the whole world! If I was an atom I’d bond with you. 😂

You are very very good. You must write a TEXTBOOK....ASAP!!!
Great question. Since Helium has a full shell with only 2 electrons, put the electrons next to each other on top of the symbol, like this: Hë.
I so wish to watch video for 1st years student chemistry at university
🙏🙏🙏
oh lmao, makes sense.
Is the Helium valency is zero? @tdewitt451
I'm a non-traditional pre-med student and this dude helped me through my accelerated Gen.chem class! (Entering medical school this coming fall!)
congrats!!
He sounds like he's blowing his own mind while explaining everything
Yes, it's just that I call it "unit conversion." So start by watching my video called "Converting Units with Conversion Factors."
Here is the right channel for all visual learners. most teachers confuse students by explaining these technics properly. THANK YOU, SIR!
Watched a video from 5 years ago, 8 years ago, to 11 years ago. You're freakin incredible man. 11 years later and your method of teaching is meticulously concise.
Thank you! I must say, I got a little emotional watching this not only because I completely understood and retained all of the information, but also because I have been watching chemistry videos all week that have done nothing but overwhelm and frustrate me. Your teaching style is amazing and I truly thank you for taking the time to make it! I cannot wait to watch your other videos 😊
this guy is an amazing teacher

I can tell you that I fell in love with chemistry when I watched your videos. Its not my field of study, but I like to learn more in my spare time. I wish there were more teachers like you when I had chemistry classes long time ago.
Damn... I took chemistry classes like 3 years ago and now my mom is back in school (since she don't really speak english she doesn't understand at all) and this video really help me remember everything and with that I was able to explain to my mom what she didn't understand... thanks so much!!! ❤️
Kind of late but such a sweet story! love your pfp btw.
"Already living in the nucleus." "one guy on the left." You're like the Bob Ross of chemistry.
Or the Richard Feynman
Tyler,
I want to thank you for your dedication to making science fun and understandable by telling stories that make the concepts understandable and interesting. I am a non-trad student in my early 40s and was that typical girl that was bad at math and science when I was younger. If I'd had teachers like you I know I could've gotten it then, because I do now because of your fantastic and fun videos. Again, thank you!
Cheri
You have the best chem instruction videos online. I read and annotate my textbook then I come here and watch a video on the subject. It helps me feel well rounded. Thank you Tyler!
My Chemistry teacher was all over the place confusing us for over an hour and you made it click for me so fast! He sux at teaching!

Damn, this guy is good. The dislikes must be from all the chemistry teachers who have all their students ran away from them.
There are teachers who know the knowledge, and there are a few "CAN TEACH"!!! Makes me wonder what the actual teaching courses teachers have to take to become a teacher.
You know it's about to get real when he says "Check this out." 😂 I get so excited
Love Star omg at the time i read this he said that LMAO🥲
I wish you were my chem teacher, you teach so well and you even make chem look interesting
This 15 min video has taught me waaay more than my teachers 1 hour lesson lecture
hi how are you doing 2023
Tyler, you explain Chemistry in the best way I've seen so far. You really help me get a grasp on the subject that I only partially understand when learning from my teacher. Thank you and keep doing what you're doing.
Dude thank you for being so organized! I think thats the most crucial part about learning math and science.
True dude
Hello! I'm a chem/math noob. Tyler, you really hold the attention of viewers in your videos, you do an excellent job of explaining (for me at least) and you are helping me slide through these classes with a little more ease/grace. Thank you.

I came here to learn about how you find the number of valence electrons for the transition metals.
Do you have such a video?

Wow dude your a genius I saw your Ted Talk and now i love watching your videos!! Keep it up bro your helping people everywhere with these vids!
This was so helpful!!! Thank you, chemistry god!!
I passed my chem midterm because of you, Your a king may god bless you
This video is still helping me and my classmates 10 years later! Thank you, it makes so much sense now!!
Hey Tyler! I really hope you respond! I am in eight grade and currently taking advanced science, the topic for eight grade is physics. I've honestly struggled so much this year. It's been insanely complicated to comprehend this crap. I didn't understand anything! My science teacher just gives us guided reading and a mini activity to help us. Then when the test comes, everyone fails. Then she uses the same excuse, "advanced science students don't get study guides." I barely understood anything and that fact that we don't receive study guides made it worse! But thank you so much for taking some of your time to explain science to people like us. Your videos have been very helpful and I love the examples you use. You certainly know what questions students want answers to! I love your videos so much and they've helped me understand things like valence electrons, etc. THANK YOU SOO MUCH! Please keep doing what you're doing in! I hope you have a nice life!!!!
Ps: I wish your were my science teacher, lol.

I watch a lot of these vids because I am so dumb when it comes to these concepts. This Tyler dude always makes me understand them. Thank you.
Hello, Tyler. I have to say, I am an older learner going back to school and your explanations are probably the best I've heard, and you are engaging and obviously are passionate about what you do. Thanks.
this was very helpful. thank you for making this video.
Awesome, great explanation!

This was one of the most beautiful videos I've seen today that helped me with my work. You are truly amazing Mr. Tyler. You earn my respect. Your teaching was like harmony to my brain. Thank you for your teaching.
Tyler, you're my man. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I am taking Micro and I have never had Chemistry and apparently I must be the only idiot in the class that didn't understand what the professor was talking about, probably do to the fact that she blew right through all of chapter 2 (chemistry principles). Shew! Thank you, your video was fun to watch as well and easy to understand.
sincerely want to comment on every single one of your videos to tell you how amazing of a teacher you are!
Dude, I've seen a lot of tutorials, videos about chemistry, phisics, lectures... And I must say that what you're doing is simply awesome and going directly to my top 10 of science channels!
The metpahors, the pase and rythym, and how you articulate are perfect to really grasp the concept.
It really shows that you reallly love to teach!
Keep it up Tyler, ver nice job :D

Oh my word I never understood like any of this until I watched this video. Now everything makes sense! Nobody likes chemistry, but with you it's not as boring! Thank you so much! I can tell you work very hard on your videos.
Sir, why did you stopped making videos
This video is a pog champ!
This video is absolutely AMAZING. I appreciate that you've more than likely simplified thing quite a bit but you've totally demystified the basics for me. For the life of me, I just couldn't get my head around what was or meant. Thank you ever so much. :D
I don't usually comment, but this is the second video I'm watching from this channel, to do a general review before my first ever chemistry exam. You are a phenomenal teacher! You're filling in the gaps flawlessly that I was missing from my instructor's lectures. Thank you!

When I first entered a chemistry class, I was often lost and confused due to the the way it was taught. An understandable outcome, given that the lecturer is presenting the material to a large body of people, rather than a single individual.
Tyler does such a great job at presenting the material in an easy to digest fashion. Which was originally complex, chemistry is being pressnted in a new light for me -- one filled with wonder and appreciation. While most will consider chemistry to be rigid and structural, both of which it is, I choose to view it as something akin to art. Being able to see all the theories and principles that are the fundamental bodies for our world has illustrated a sense of interconnectedness that was previously unbeknownst to me.
Thank you, Tyler, for all the work that you do.
This was a great video. You explained yourself crystal clear, patiently, and really well articulated. You did a great job.
I wish my teachers taught as clear as this
I love your channel so bad. Please replace my chemistry teacher.

+Sabre ™ mine is confusing
Thank you, my teacher did a good job of having you explain this to my class rather than having a boring lecture. You can really make a topic seem interesting, and I would like to say you did a good job. I hope you get to 1 mil subs!
Thank you for clarifying! The more I watch your videos the more I love chemistry!

This video made me so happy today. I have been trying to figure this out for two weeks. Why can't my teacher simplify it and explain like this? Thank you!!!!
You are amazing!! You are so much better than any professor I’ve ever had. You explain everything so clearly and slowly I am SO grateful for you 💛💛💛💛
You are the best!

can I just say that you're the BEST chemistry teacher that has ever existed?
Seriously! You helped me so much. I love all your examples and analogies. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos.
I get how to make molicules, but how do I craft a fence in minecraft??? xDDDDD
Two sticks on the bottom center and middle squares, and any wood planks to the left and right of those.
Careful some of the things are not correct for example 10 electrons per valence is not true you can only have 8 per valence because atoms gravitate towards 8(octet)
What? When did I ever say that there are 10 electrons in the valence shell? Also, after the 3rd shell you have 18 electrons per valence level, but never 10.
Tyler DeWitt he is right ,.....he never did say that there were 10 electrons.
anyways tyler...the video is awesome.....come out with more
