    Where do electrons live in atoms? They live in energy levels or shells, which are varying distances from the nucleus, and can hold varying numbers of electrons. The most important electrons in an atom are the valence electrons, which are in the outermost energy level or shell. We'll look at how to determine the number of valence electrons in an atom, based on which column it is in on the periodic table.

    Chemistry is such a colorful subject and its too bad that its typically taught in such a technical manner.
    This guy truly understands and appreciates the magic behind chemistry and it shows in the way he teaches. All science should be taught in this way. Feynman would be proud.

      I respectfully disagree with you but probably because I had an awesome chem teacher I think he goes way to slow and I watched this video expecting a somewhat high school level description with orbitals and things that have a level of complexity to them like metallic bonds and electron clouds but I got the stuff that I learned in seventh grade which left me very disappointed.I do agree that chemistry is a very colorful subject and love it just thought he could be much faster and not so basic.

    • @lewissison6557
      @lewissison6557 Před 6 lety +36

      Its not that its basic, its that he is actually teaching instead of just rushing and not thinking about the student's thought on it. This is better than reading an article she found online

      +Stephanie - me too, he's a great teacher... And a good looking one too, lol, so in any case, he's much easier to listen too ... and although he moves at the same speed as my teacher does it would seem my teacher moves way too fast just because he teaches everything in its most dense forms and so on... I mean, this Tyler Dewitt guy, he's just great because its not like he slows anything down but he definitely simplifies some things that don't need to be taught in such a complex sounding matter, thats just trying to sound smart... I mean, Idk, I believe a good scholastic journal doesn't make it's readers feel stupid, and a good professor is the same way... don't try to impress us, try to break it down and simplify it to a sense that we may quickly take grasp of and begin to understand as students, and in the long run when we someday look at complex problems/situations/tests, and have the ability to think them through as though they are simple, clean cut, organized, ideas like so ^^^, We'll look back and thank you for being such a good teaher/professor.

    Hey Tyler! I really hope you respond! I am in eight grade and currently taking advanced science, the topic for eight grade is physics. I've honestly struggled so much this year. It's been insanely complicated to comprehend this crap. I didn't understand anything! My science teacher just gives us guided reading and a mini activity to help us. Then when the test comes, everyone fails. Then she uses the same excuse, "advanced science students don't get study guides." I barely understood anything and that fact that we don't receive study guides made it worse! But thank you so much for taking some of your time to explain science to people like us. Your videos have been very helpful and I love the examples you use. You certainly know what questions students want answers to! I love your videos so much and they've helped me understand things like valence electrons, etc. THANK YOU SOO MUCH! Please keep doing what you're doing in! I hope you have a nice life!!!!

    When I first entered a chemistry class, I was often lost and confused due to the the way it was taught. An understandable outcome, given that the lecturer is presenting the material to a large body of people, rather than a single individual.
    Tyler does such a great job at presenting the material in an easy to digest fashion. Which was originally complex, chemistry is being pressnted in a new light for me -- one filled with wonder and appreciation. While most will consider chemistry to be rigid and structural, both of which it is, I choose to view it as something akin to art. Being able to see all the theories and principles that are the fundamental bodies for our world has illustrated a sense of interconnectedness that was previously unbeknownst to me.
    Thank you, Tyler, for all the work that you do.

    Careful some of the things are not correct for example 10 electrons per valence is not true you can only have 8 per valence because atoms gravitate towards 8(octet)

    • @tdewitt451
      @tdewitt451  Před 9 lety +17

      What? When did I ever say that there are 10 electrons in the valence shell? Also, after the 3rd shell you have 18 electrons per valence level, but never 10.
