This video covers: - What electrolysis is - The equipment of electrolysis and how it should be set up - An example of electrolysis with a molten compound
Hi everyone, please be aware the lines on the battery are drawn the wrong way around. The shorter line should be on the left (connected to the cathode), and the longer line should be on the right (connected to the anode). Apologies for the mistake :)
something about electrolysis is so hard for me that i never understood it. this video was my last hope and i was literally about to give up when i understood it after tons of vids so THANK YOU
Thank you so much for this. I did really bad on the last test about electrolysis and have been stressed loads about learning it but you teach in such a calm and clear way, THANK YOUUU !!!!
I couldn't thank you enough on how much these videos have helped me throughout my learning journey where my school teachers really arent helping at all. Your explanation are such wonderful in a way that it is straight to the point, but also understandable and quick to understand. Props up to you and your teams for all this wonderful work!!!
My teacher recommends using the acronym ‘PANIC’. Positive Anode Negative Is Cathode And ‘OILRIG for oxidation and reduction: Oxidation Is Losing Reduction Is Gaining
In electrolysis +ions > cathode(-) > gain electron > reduced . And -ion >anode (+) >lose electron >oxidised. However , Fuel cell cathode (+) and anode(-)
You guys can also watch Tyler Dewitt's videos on Electrolysis,Electroplating,Galvanic cell. But some topics are left out there like Electrolysis of Aluminum Oxide and Electrolysis of Aqueous Solutions. For that you can watch free science lessons videos.
don't you just note down what you see, my chem teacher said anything you can describe with your 5 senses, like if you see bubbling that's an observation, if you see a layer of deposit on the bottom that's an observation, if it makes a particular smell that's an observation too
So just for anyone who wants to remember the reduction and oxidisation meanings you can use this simple mnemonic OILRIG Oxidisation Is Loss of electrons Reduction Is Gain of electrons
@@EthanLee-dv1ec I think it's not focused on one specific spec, it covers what will be on most of the exam boards and anything extra for your exam board that he hasn't done, you have to do yourself

It's OK everyone makes mistakes
OK
No problem, the sign of battery really doesn't matter that much in Chem
It's totally OK. Cause I didn't even notice it.😅
thank you so much for correcting yourself - i got scared i did it wrong in my test 😅
Thank you so much ..... never thought its so easy !!!! .... my chemistry teacher should be your student !!
Same here, my chemistry teacher is utterly useless
@@mopthefloorezard4699 I can relate
😂😂😂
My teachers are fine its just I just need a bit more explanation to understand the topic
@@account-21 i agree
My teacher recommended these videos for revision for my GCSE's and I can understand why! These videos are so useful

So glad we could help out Hafsa, thank you for the comment 😊
Cognito is the best channel for IGCSE science. I got 7A*s and cognito certainly helped make that happen. Thank you
Ma Sha Allah
For anyone it may help, mnemonic for oxidation and reduction at anodes and cathode

Ty that’s rly helpful :D
@@cheeseypuff9819 your welcome ;)
my teacher is so funny, he helped us remember with CATions are PUSSYtive, and anions sound like onions, onions make you cry, and so are negative

dislikes are from our chemistry teachers :)
fr cognito be saving us
😂
No, my chemistry teacher gave up- and just told us to watch cognito for revision.
What about people who are coming from there chemistry teachers
Harsh reality 😂😂😂😂
Your the only person who could explain this properly to me, thank you!
Thanks a lot. I needed this.
Very welcome Rashi, thanks for the comment - really appreciate it as it helps the videos get seen :)
Have my chemistry gcse today, never understtood electrolysis despite intensive lesrning on it but this video has helped so much

Thanks, glad we could help Daisy 😊
Drawing this diagram out with all the labels and half equations and other notes makes one heck of a difference
this was the most useful video ive ever watched genuinley. thank you 😩
These videos are so much better than my teacher's lessons!
God bless you! Because of your videos I’m sitting in higher paper this time instead of foundation Thank You😊!
this is so wholesome
U dont get enough recognition like you taught me what i coudnt understand and saved me a whole hour to understand from the book

You made the concept crystal clear to me!! Thanks🙏😀
what i would do to have this guy as my teacher. I understood my entire chemistry chapter because of him
i love you i love this channel idk what id do without this
man this is gold
my teacher literally avoided teaching us this, i’m so thankful you exists!
Thank you sooo much. I watched other videos but they were too quick. You explained it so clearly. Thank you once again.
OH MY GOSH. Thank you so much. These videos are really helping me. THANK YOU!!!!!
I’ve been focusing sm on reading the comments I gtg watch this video again
Thank you so much sir! Don't stop to help us. keep doing it!!
Very good video, the best chemistry teacher in my opinion!
excellent video you make it so easy to understand and don't miss out any key info
I HATE this topic i just dont understand itttt

Same bruhh , this topic literally sucks
It took me a whil but now I get it, just keep practicing and it will be easy you got this 😊

Only my school teaching this in year 8 and me sitting here trying to understand. Thanks for the help I got an A on my assignment
Great video
This is actually so simple ❤❤❤
he makes it so simple
the video is great really.....but there is a mistake at 1:47 where the longer side at the battery is positive and it is supposed to be on the anode
A mnemonic for oxidation is losing electrons and reduction is gaining electrons is
OIL - oxidation is losing
RIG - Reduction is gaining
I thank you very much!!
Great content! Just to check, is there a mistake with the polarities of the batteries?
Hi Marcus - yep! Explained a bit in the pinned comment :)

the video is great but i just have a question: how do you determine the observation after the compounds have been electroylsed?

Hi Cognito, just a little question- why do the bromide atoms only give two electrons to the positive anode? Thanks!
There are only 2 electrons in the bromide to transfer.

when do you use electrolysis for molten vs aqueous?? my chem teacher said electrons cant flow in molten but some books said it can...
