Residents shocked after hidden camera found in Southern California neighborhood

- Residents are dismayed after a hidden camera disguised as a rock was discovered in a Chino Hills neighborhood. The camera was designed to blend in with its environment and was carefully placed in a grassy area underneath a tree on a center median.
The camera was also pointed directly at James Dimapasok’s home. “It was a camera that was covered in clay that looked like a rock so it was very precise,” Dimapasok said. “It was on a power bank so it was a cordless camera.”
Dimapasok's neighbor alerted him last week after discovering the hidden camera outside of their homes on Glen Ridge Drive. “I was scared,” he said. “My wife was crying.”
KTLA’s Shelby Nelson reports on May 9, 2024.

Theres probably a lott of neighborhoods with hidden cameras where they shouldn't be.
Shouldn't be? Who says?
Where shouldn’t they be?
Start checking & paying attention
My downstairs neighbors have a camera pointed at the sidewalk, recording everyone who walks by... I make sure to "🖕🏾" every time I pass by.
why? cops got drones, helicopters and planes recording you all the time. be more scared of that.
thats a teenager , not an adult

What? That’s definitely a kid! 🤣 someone said a wife? Do you have eyes, friend? 🤣

You've just been promoted to the detective for that department
I would’ve left it and waited for that guy to come pick it up again.
And then done what? Asked him why he’s using his 1st amendment in an odd way? Nothing illegal about filming a house from a sidewalk. Google does it and no one cares.

@@aleuttrel2260 its a leave and forget cameras. The newcomer latinos are not that stupid. They know how to do home invasions effectively
What's a bigger crime? Filming in public, or, theft of property?
They should have put something in front of it, like a yard sign and waited for the person to come and move it then catch the guy.
Come on police... This is happening all over the world. You know exactly what this is, lol. Either they're playing dumb on purpose or they actually are dumb. Was the scooter not a dead giveaway?
This is a "porch-pirate". They often use scooters and bikes because they're quiet and can be taken right up to the porch, never leaving the thieves' possession. Park a van around the corner, so plates aren't seen by doorbell cameras, and use a scooter to go door to door because it's faster than on foot, and these guys cover huge ranges, 40-50 miles a day. They're not specifically looking at that house, they're watching the street for delivery vans. Then they know when to go down each street. "When" they strike is important, for a porch pirate, it's all about the "When". Too early and they get nothing, too late and all the good stuff is gone. They need real-time recon.
They used to just follow the vans, but now many of the vans in problem areas actually have rear cameras that can spot when there's a vehicle following for a long time. They're not ubiquitous yet by any means, but they are becoming annoyingly common for thieves, lol. Those follower cameras have led to quite a few arrests and convictions in the last couple of years.
Also a couple years ago, you knew for example that UPS would show up to a given neighborhood at 9AM, FedEx at 2PM, Amazon at 8PM, etc, with predictable routes and schedules. That made it easy for Porch Pirates, so most companies opted for some randomization in their routes in non-commercial, problem areas.
Thieves responded by ordering small $1 items to random addresses in a targeted neighborhood so they'd get tracking details and they'd be notified when it and presumably everything else in the area arrived. So services stopped real-time tracking for small ticket items. You can still track your new TV, but a 6-pack for hair ties just gets there when it gets there, lol.
So next the thieves opted to use public (usually DOT) traffic cam feeds. This was useful, as a still image can be AI-processed every few seconds to detect specific vehicles and send an SMS alert, so the thief is cruising the neighborhood and gets an alert for the big brown van on Maple Ave in real time, and that whole setup to monitor an entire city costs under $500 using the public cameras. Municipalities responded in a variety of ways, usually with a delay and some sort of time-out on the public camera feeds, forcing you to log in to see them, or enter a captcha every 15-30 minutes. That's still easily worked around, but requires a slightly more tech-savvy thief.
So then thieves place their own cameras in targeted areas so they retain control of the feed. It costs a little more, but they break even in a day or so, the cost of doing "business". And the cameras and battery packs are cheap (under $15 on Temu and Wish), the only real expense is the wireless communications, usually these are planted outside houses with unprotected wifi. Then wireless communication is just a $5 wifi addon to the camera. All-in $25-$50 per camera with a little DIY assembly, and ~$500 on the back-end for the computer the cameras transmit to, which detects vehicles and relays messages to the people on the ground. Sometimes they will use cellular connections tied to prepaid accounts (paid in cash) as well. It's still much cheaper and more efficient than using a human "spotter".
This is not new. This is not a mystery. This is not obscure information known only to insiders, lol. The police know exactly what this is, so why don't the home owners? It seems like something you could tell them to both put their minds at ease and help them to take necessary precautions. This is just someone trying to steel your delivered socks, USB charging cables and whatever other crap you order online, and they are still easily thwarted if you pay attention. And now you know where they're operating. You DO NOT put this on the news, just set a bait package and wait down the street and arrest him. It's easy. All this report and the police's silence to the homeowner did was tip your hand to the bad guys. Report on it AFTER the arrest, not before, lol.
Very interesting!

Should have put the camera back and wait for the person to come back and get it. Catch and question him or her. Now he or she knows they have it. The cover is blown.
Exactly. They would have to come back and replace the charger. It would have been max 2 days, for the battery to die out, and they could have set their ring camera to zoom in on it. It would have been so simple to catch the person.
Instead they put it on the local news... what a cracksquad of saavy, motivated journalists
@@TamTranTriZzle But if they set it to only turn on, on motion the battery could last as long as a month. I know cuz I like most people these days have a Ring doorbell cam and those batteries last a LONG time before needing to charge.
Yep
@@mlong9475 Sure, but anyone who does this, would not risk leaving it unattended for more than max a couple days. Even more than a full day is risking it. If it was a hidden camera inside, in a room, a car etc.. that can go undetected indefinitely, they could certainly leave it for much longer. But this is outside in a very public/high traffic area. Forget the grass growing and has to be cut, but just the fact that an area where people walk by, or even dogwalking etc... the chance it will be stumbled upon is high. If it was me, I would not leave it for more than 24 hours. At the least, they should have monitoted it for a day (maybe they did?)
This is the state of journalism. They read the words even when they conflict with the report from their own eyes. Every joke about anchorpersons you have ever seen is true.

I was wondering exactly how that phone call must have gone. “Yes I’d like to report a camera looking at my house and it’s got me all sorts of scared!” Police response…”so you realize just about every home and car in your neighborhood also has a camera pointed at your house right?! Do those also have you all shivering in your panties as well?”

They are called Ring Cameras. They are everywhere, and anyone can access them.
The hilarity of the home owner being freaked out about a camera pointed at his house than they provide a camera image from his home pointing out to the same place. Filming isnt a crime in public people.
Setting up a surveillance camera on your own home to monitor the safety and security of your house is not a crime. Walking down the street and recording isn’t a crime. Hiding a camera on someone else’s lawn and secretly recording their property can in fact be a crime.
@@HiThisIsMine Can be. or IS ?
@@KuramaKitsune1 - Can be. The act in itself is not illegal.

@@massv953 - lol, ok, it’s on an easement.. I bet the city shows up a couple times a month to mow and water it too.
The point is that surreptitiously recording someone, can in fact be a crime. This isn’t the guys home where he is monitoring for security. I’m sure he does know the laws, which is exactly why he was trying to disguise the camera so nobody sees it… and that’s a huge part of the illegality of it.
Were any laws broken here?
The filming itself, from a public place, is not a crime. However, it could be deemed a crime if linked to a conspiracy to commit a crime related to the camera's placement.

As someone who has volunteered in human trafficking awareness since 2010, This is absolutely nefarious, and most likely nothing to do with the home it was facing. The person who did it disguised themselves to look like a kid with an animal hat with ears and using a scooter. Human trafficking most likely to see which kids walk home alone. Broadband security cameras that run off cell towers are expensive bc most home-use cameras use a nearby wifi signal off a router. A needs a dedicated hidden IP address. Time for the neighborhood to surveil what's going on in their neighborhood too. Exact reason why the person was covered up the way they were.
This is a tactic sometimes deployed by private investigators and law enforcement or anyone trying to surveille someone but setting up on the house in a vehicle is not possible... When I used to investigate workmens comp claims we would deploy setups like this in a McDonald's bag that looked like someone littered their trash but we were always in close proximity ready to follow the subject if they left the residence, also if someone picked up our decoy because they thought it was trash or something then we would politely explain the situation as much as we could and retrieve our equipment.... I have only worked 2 cases where we deployed this method... And hundreds of cases where it was not necessary because there was somewhere we could park and monitor what we needed to from the vehicle..... That being said I don't think that is what is going on here at least not for any legal purposes.... Probably the target because he is a business owner.... Might have saved himself a violent home invasion.... Hope they get some answers

Scooters are a nice tool to move about quickly when you don't want to be tracked
Have you ever heard of bicycles?
Omg this happened in Temecula yesterday! Crown Hill neighborhood. Camera was disguised as a plant and the neighbor saw them do it and notified the homeowner. Bomb squad was called to make sure it wasn't an explosive.
If I found out that there was a hidden camera placed facing my home the first thing I would think is that someone might be trying to scope my home and learn who lives in my home and study the ins and out of people in my home so that they can make their move and rob my home. That’s exactly what I would suspect! We are living very scary times with the cost of inflation, housing, food, and gas up to the roof. It’s becoming almost nearly impossibly for average hardworking Americans even middle-class folks to sustain themselves with such high cost. It would not surprise me that things will only get worst, and we will continue to see an increase of home robberies as people start to become desperate. We are living very scary and uncertain times.
