'La Soirée du Hockey' on CBC/ Radio-Canada: First game at newly renovated Forum in Montreal on Nov. 2, 1968 Posted for educational and historical purposes only. No copyright infringement is intended.
I had a horrible toothache when I was there. The habs won and I waltzed down to the players bench (Montreal) and sat down. No security bullies, no glass behind, just a quiet building. What a great feeling. Next day I went to the Dentist.
Still can’t believe CBC sold the rights to that intro song to TSN... only to have TSN cheap out on the next NHL tv contract. Now you’re lucky to hear it once a month during the season.
CBC didn't sell the rights to the song. The composer kept the rights, CBC licensed it for 40 years. Then the composer wanted a nice retirement and so asked the CBC for a million bucks to sell the song to them. CBC was like "hell, no, we're not paying a million bucks to buy a song that's only famous because we played it on our network". TSN, in a drunken stupor, was like "hey, we'll take that amazing offer, it will be great to have it once we get NHL TV rights in a few years". Then they both lost TV hockey rights to Sportsnet. So now the song is gathering dust in a TSN basement.
Sorry, you're wrong. The old forum is not a museum. It's nothing but a building with a movie theater and restaurants and offices I think. I should know, I live in Montreal.
Love that classic hockey night in Canada theme music. This must be the first game at the rebuilt Forum. They eliminated the poles and built a beautiful front entrance.
@@euchalobcool, all those years 70’-‘95 (?) watching Montreal on tv they would always have a shot of those. I never knew they were escalators. The rabbit ears weren’t great I guess.
At the very beginning of the video there's a butterfly logo. The whole 14+ minute clip is in black and white, so I don't know what the colours would be. It's beautiful to see in colour. When did SRC used the logo and for how many years did they used it? Merci in advance
Whoever was responsible for not keeping the old Forum as an historical building, has no class at all. Just like the tearing down of Blue Bonnets, it's shows how classless the city of Montreal is. Since the Canadiens moved to the Bell Centre, I'm glad that they never won another Stanely Cup. I also think that the old Forum ghosts, are happy too.
I so agree with you my friend. I wasn't a Habs fan growing up in the 70.'s. But they were my favorite hockey villains. When I came back to Montreal about 10 years ago and found out the only thing kept was the center ice area I just about cried. The Forum wasn't just hockey history, it was Montreal, indeed Quebec's history. You might as well have torn down the Roman Coliseum to make way for a mall. Same effect and same mentality.
Yes. I truly believe that. You may not believe or call it ghosts. But 'negative energy/ rapacious greed still has the same effect. You reap what you sow.
It was a colossal error in judgement, absolutely!. They could have easily kept it intact and turned it into a practice facility + Montreal HOF/museum. It's a damn shame.
Terry Sawchuk played in just 13 games for Detroit that year. This was one of Danny Lawson's first NHL games (#18, Detroit), and one of the few that Bob Falkenberg (#3) played with the Red Wings that year. It's interesting to see both Mahovlich brothers (Pete is #11) playing for Detroit in Montreal, where they played together as Canadiens a few years later.
Anyone remember the name of the smoked meat place right next to the forum. It had paintings of former Montreal players. It was either Swartz, Lester's or Dunns.
Do you notice back in the good old days that when the play was whistled down they quickly went and lined up for the face off and got the game going again. On the other hand they were aloud to freeze the puck along the boards to force face offs.
Thanks, Daniel. I saw a color version of this ad, and the piano is yellow with red lettering and designs. The piano is, as they say in Montreal, "C'est Magnifique!" By the way, who is this musical group, and did they do any English songs?

Helmets have actually been around the NHL since the late 1920's. Even Maurice "Rocket" Richard and Elmer Lach wore one for awhile and in the early 1930's the Toronto Maple Leafs attempted to make them mandatory for all their players after one of their star players, Ace Bailey, suffered a career-ending head injury after being checked from behind by Boston's Eddie Shore. However, they didn't really start to catch on in the NHL until the league suffered its first player death as a direct result of an injury suffered during a game midway through the previous season. Minnesota's Bill Masterton struck the back of his head on the ice after being checked to the ice in a game against Oakland on January 13, 1968 and died 20 hours later. They began popping up afterwards and the league made them mandatory for all players in 1979.
Back when the reffs let them play the game instead of controlling the game. The game sucks big time now. Haven't watched a full game in a few years and none this year. Iam done with the bullshit. Loved the video though.

Frank Mahovlich in the picture, too. Love watching these old games!

There's a few names from my youth!
Are you sure this is the Forum? Where are all the silhouettes standing and blocking the cameras?
Maybe a dumb question, but at 3:35, why is the opening faceoff NOT at center ice?
Likely because of editing purposes just for this person's CZcams. I'm sure the actual game began with the opening faceoff.
Back in those days the façeoff took place where the puck may have been shot out of play or a two line pass by Detroit.
At 10:10 was a hand pass from where the façeoff takes place.
Who is the P.A Announcer at 13:53 ?
