  • Earlier this week, Bulgari dropped the new Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic, an ultra-thin tourbillon that fits into the existing Octo collection. But this isn’t any old tourbillon, nay, it’s the world’s thinnest tourbillon. Period. Not only that, but it’s also become the world’s thinnest automatic watch and thinnest automatic tourbillon in the process. So that’s three world records broken in one watch release. I was finally able to see this watch in the metal earlier today and it didn’t disappoint. Here are some of my thoughts. For the full story, go to www.hodinkee.com/articles/bul...

I always respect a company when they try to push the boundaries of what is possible even if I don't like the look of the watch.
In this case I LOVE the look but can't get past the bad legibility.
Despite that, I respect the engineering behind it!!

I see the scientists have made significant improvements to CaraBot in v3.5. Before long, she will even be able to blend into society and host live shows.

Not only is it the thinnest tourbillon and thinnest automatic movement, they were able to do this without sacrificing the durability of the movement due to the use of advanced materials including titanium for the main plate and high strength steel alloys for certain other components. There is only one plate here, and everything is attached to this plate. The tourbillon here is attached only from one side, the cage being held in place with springs and using a ceramic ball bearing. Ensuring the thinness and durability of everything meant also reinventing the keyless works; instead of using a traditional yoke or a rocking bar mechanism a column wheel switcher- possibly the smallest ever made- is used with a pusher on the side to switch between winding and setting.

"Somewaht busy dial" - Ah Yea!!! "Relatively Easy to read...." Ah No!!! But then again this watch was not made for its legibility. Pick a solid Flieger for that. This was made to look cool and break records. Very cool indeed.

that is to set the time and to wind. The watch is so thin it doesnt have a regular pull-out crown.

Why dont you sit down with Bulgari and other brands behind the watches you cover at Basel? Look at Revolution magazine that get proper insight with the company behind the watch, sitting down with the makers behind the art of horology and explaining why and what goes into these watches. All the philosophy and thinking behind every brand just gets neglected and thrown to the side in favor of an editor's opinion of a piece that doesn't really matter when in the end everybody's opinion is different.

I think those are coming, there are quick intros to the products being released where there is literally very little editing involved. Hodinkee I’m sure still have high quality videos coming from Baselworld

Amazing engineering. But personally I think it’s ugly. Differing colours in the movement might break it up a bit.

Cara, you are beautiful but this new hairstyle / color just doesn't fit you, your previous hair color are 100x better! Respect your works very much girl and you are a talented lady, keep up the good works and talk to your hairstylist when you are back in NYC, cheers :)

I think it looks like someone put a broom on her head. And it's a shame because Cara isn't a beauty in the classical sense of it, but i liked her as a brunette.
