  • There’s no point dragging this out; mechanical watches are not better than quartz-quite the opposite in fact. Quartz is objectively, categorically-and by a considerable margin-better than mechanical. It’s as simple as that.

    Actually mechanical movements were probably saved by something apparently even more fascinating than the movements themselves: Swiss watchmakers' marketing. Inefficiency was rebranded as " handmade" , and expensive production cost vs. quartz was rebranded as "luxury". Genius.

      It's effectively jewelry for men and practicality is thrown out the window. When you want something beautifully polished with minute little details being perfect it cannot be mass manufactured. Seiko are going off and making some very lovely 'high-end' quartz watches, and just happened to notice that I can now pick up a citizen Eco-drive that retains the solar power - put picks up the time/timezone from a GPS satellite..
      Then you have the "Astronomia" from Jacob & Co which are like beautiful little mechanical sculptures, that just happen to tell the time..
      I think all I meant to say was that I don't agree that "Mechanical is for those who want watchmaking" - just that it's rather lovely to live in a time where whatever you want from a watch is available, in a multitude of styles/prices/complexities.

      James Halliday Good points. I think if I’d have said mechanical is for those who want traditional watchmaking we’d be in agreement. There’s something incredibly satisfying about the way a traditional mechanical watch is put together, and that’s what a lot of folks like. However, some of us can also appreciate the technological marvels of quartz watches too: just in a slightly different way. I’ve got modern and vintage mechanicals together with kinetic and battery quartz pieces in my collection, and I appreciate them all.

    In my mind, automatics are cool only because they have the sweeping second hand and the see-thru case back where you see the mechanics at work. If an automatic doesn’t have a see-thru case back or open heart design, I tend to seek quartz due to accuracy, ease of use, and nowhere near as much service costs as even the cheaper automatics (like Seiko). And almost 90% of automatics on the market are mass produced, not hand assembled (even Rolex and Omega).

    For me, a mechanical watch is a metaphor for my life and a relationship. If I take care of the watch it will take care of me. If I stop moving the watch stops moving. I have to occasionally adjust the time and date. But these things remind me that the watch, like me, is not perfect and I need to stop racing around and take a moment for self care. When I look at my watch I am reminded of all the little things that makes life keep going which I use to take for granted. I find tranquility, harmony and balance in a mechanical watch.

    • @a_single_white_female
      @a_single_white_female Před 5 lety +18

      The only watches that a battery will last 10 years in are digital watches, which I personally find hard to read.
      In an analogue piece, you will be lucky to get 3 years out of a battery.
      I like the idea of solar watches, I have owned 8 of them. But 3 have failed. This is a bad failure rate for just my personal experience with them. Two of them the crowns just fell out (both Seikos) and the 3rd, the battery wouldn't charge and needed to be replaced (defeating the point of a solar watch). The Seiko quartz line seems in general much more cheaply made than Seiko mechanicals, which makes me suspect they are designed by different departments within Seiko. All of my Seiko quartz pieces have had truly terrible crowns that just pop out whenever they want to.
      I had another quartz piece, a Victorinox, that needed a battery change every year, and on the 3rd battery change, stopped working entirely.
      I had another quartz, a Seiko Chronograph, that after I replaced the battery the second hand began moving backwards. (And yes I did trip the circuit, it didn't help).
      So now I wear my Seiko Turtle, SKX007, or SNK809. Much better made than Seiko's quartz pieces, and no battery to worry about.

    I started to crave mechanical in the 1970s, as soon as it became virtually impossible to buy a mechanical watch any more. I mean, just a few years previous, you could buy mechanical everywhere. Then almost over night they were gone. It was then I started to miss the old mechanical watches. I remember searching through Manhattan looking for one. Everyone looking at me like, "waddya want a mechanical watch for when it isn't gonna be as accurate as a brand spanking new quartz watch...?" Because I want one, was my answer. I felt the workmanship in a mechanical. I wanted the quiet little city of gears turning in an orderly and peaceable way right on my wrist which was otherwise immersed in a chaotic world. So...after some time I found a jewelry story in Lower Manhattan which, for the umpteenth time I made my request and received the same reply but, as I began to turn to go out the owner said, "wait! let me check in back..." and after a few minutes he came to the counter with a small box containing an Omega automatic which, as he didn't plan to sell any more, he sold to me for about $150, as I recall. I still have that watch and have loved it ever since...No quartz (and I have them) watch can do that for me...

    It all depends: the only movement I dont have represented in my watch collection is Kinetic, so I cant really speak to that first hand.
    That said, I find with my lifestyle (working nights, always on-the-go, etc.), quartz just makes so much more sense than anything else...
    It is definitely more accurate & reliable-- and, yes, I'm taking battery changes into consideration. Thats why I have more than one quartz watch with staggered battery changes. Also, solar quartz watches are just awesome for that.

    What's the purpose of a watch?: Giving you the time. The more exact/accurate/precise a watch is, the better. The less maintenance it needs and, in such case, the fastest and cheapest, the better (less moving and friction/wear components). The more time it keeps running without the need of wearing it in a daily basis or otherwise to winding it, the better
    So yes, undoubtedly a quartz watch is better than a mechanical one. Morover, generally speaking they are even much cheaper.
    However I do love mechanical watches more than I do with quartz/battery operated ones (having both types, including Breitling Aerospaces and Emergencies). There's something in them (call it art, beauty, engineering skills, craftsmanship or whatever) that just keeps my admiration, because I can feel they are "alive" and need my care.
    Drawings made by a computer may be perfect in comparison to the subtle "imperfections" from those made by humans (Picasso, Goya, Velázquez, Sorolla, Monet, Rembrandt, Van Gogh...), but I just prefer a Sorolla or a Monet rather than that drawing made by Sonny in "I, Robot".
    Even though quartz watches are better, the industry of mechanical watches keeps going because most enthusiasts just LOVE them and PREFER them, even being anachronistic. The industry just produces (and makes profits) what clients demand. Period.
    Just my two cents.

    I'm a US Marine. I wear g-shocks. I've broken 2 of them so far from some of the things we do. I am starting to get into watches and i am looking for a mechanical watch. I wouldn't wear one into combat or during training. But i am fascinated by them. Anybody willing to help me out with suggestions on what to start getting? I'm poor.. ha. My max budget is $120. I'd really like a durable mechanical watch. Something that can handle being roughed up a bit and the high volume of shooting i do. Even if it's not mechanical, is there something other than a g-shock for $120 or less, or maybe multiple watches up to that point you'd suggest i start looking at to get into this? I am grateful for any advice.

    I've had a Seiko 5 in the past. A really accurate one, too. It gained one second per 24h. But it really annoyed me that it stopped after not wearing it for 2 days, so I sold it. As of right now, I only wear solar watches, because they also have an interesting technological aspect to them and are more accurate and in general more practical than mechanicals. I kinda get the appeal of mechanical watches but it just doesn't do it for me.
    And who even came up with that "Wrist watches are not for telling the time anymore"?? That's exactly what I use them for, so I don't have to use my phone. Never understood that argument.

    Well think of it this way. Got to live with the times. Technology had to advance at some point. In theory the quartz crisis should have never existed. Accurate time is a must. One must work smarter not harder. Eventually a mechanical spring will weaken. Things that work more efficiently should require less maintenance and with less friction. Quartz and digital watched are a living testimony to that. A mechanical watch always has to be tweaked especially if the lubrication oils dry. In a quartz or digital watch very little tweaking oiling or no oil at all is required. Technology is just evolving from gears to electromechanical and electromagnetic servos and stepper motors using a Rochelle salt Chrystal tuning for instead of an escapement

      I agree that a Spring Drive should be in the neighborhood of a quartz watch. I think Seiko says 1s per day, which is half the stated accuracy of my citizen. And that's perhaps due to the more complex regulation system in Spring drive. Spring drive is pointless as a purely practical device because a Citizen Eco can keep as good or better time with a lifespan of 10+ years, and will keep running as long as you keep enough light on it per day. But I would buy a Spring Drive for sure! I love it's complexity and how it marries a number of technologies. It's cool.

    • @hantms
      @hantms Před 5 lety +3

      Yes spring drive is cool; if only because the phrase that this video ends with 'we just don't care' very much applies to that technology, and to Seiko's philosophy. They even still make Kinetic Quartz watches, and that really doesn't make sense. (To have a moving rotor weight to charge a watch when solar is objectively better.)
      So what does spring drive offer.. it basically removes the battery from a quartz regulated movement, replacing it with a traditional main spring to power the movement. But it's anyone's guess as to why that's a good idea. While it still doesn't appeal to the purists to have a quartz crystal in there at all.

They finish even their quartz movements to a very high standard and the rest of the watch - you know, the parts you actually interact with - are on a different level in terms of quality.
    Don’t get me wrong, all things being equal, I’ll take an automatic over a quartz, and a hand wound over either, but those people who categorically rule out quartz watches are either profoundly uneducated about watches or just...wrong.

And for whatever it’s worth, I actually wear my quartz Royal Oak more than my automatic Royal Oak, because it’s thinner and more durable. So it is actually pretty dumb and not at all “commonsense” to say that no one would spend serious money on a quartz. Anyone with a basic knowledge of watches, a functional brain or access to a price list would happily swap me their Sub or Speedmaster for a quartz AP or Patek, and anyone with a mind of their own would care more about the craftsmanship that you get in every aspect of a watch from a brand like AP or Patek than the type of movement that comes in a mass produced watch, especially since most people will never even see it. None of my quartz watches survived, I think this has more to do with their cheapness than an inherent flaw in quartz designs. But I have inexpensive digital watches that are 30 years old and still worn today. Quartz watches can have both electrical failures and mechanical failures. Solid state is accurate and reliable, but not aesthetic.

      Nah, mechanical watches are so fragile, they can’t handle vibration.

    A quartz watch is superior in keeping the time, a mechanical is superior in entertaining.
    There's something rather calming to a smooth second hand.

    after buying expensive quarts for years i found an old hand winding watch that belongs to my father, i got it repaired to gift the watch back to him and .....................................now i have a collection of vintage mechanical watches so you sir summed it up clearly "we don't care" and might i add love this old technology.

    Quartz is only better at time-keeping. So if you watch exists solely for the purpose of keeping the time, then quartz is better. But most people who would ever be watching this video have a watch as a piece of jewelry, and all those shiny metal bits in a mechanical movement make for better jewelry than the electronic bits in a quartz watch.

      Yes, but to be fair, most mechanical watches do not have visible movements , especially when on the wrist. It is the knowing that they are there that makes them special - I have a JLC Master small second almost entirely because of this channel and the movement is only visible from the back. And I love it. To be fair, it is also very accurate - or at least as accurate as I would ever need!

    My wife recently replaced her 5 year old Tissot quartz for a new Rolex datejust. All she has to say about the Rolex is that she has to adjust it every week...oh and the bracelet is uncomfortable.

      And if she takes it off for a couple of days, the time AND date must be reset. A watch is supposed to tell YOU the time, not the other way around.

    • @LG-kl3co
      @LG-kl3co Před 5 lety +4

      Yes but she now has a worthwhile investment. Now if that Rolex had been quartz, well, it would have been less than worthwhile. It might surprise you to know that the quartz movement in the Tissot is actually about £18 to buy. So that illustrates the value of a quartz watch. Compare a mechanical movement , properly looked after with the occasional service will last for decade after decade. The Quartz movement will not....without a shadow of doubt it will not.
      I gave up with Quartz when my Omega Constellation Megaquartz packed up for the second time. I have had Orient/Seiko quartz , Casio, and Tissot quartz give up on me. My Rolex GMT master 2 will celebrate its 20 birthday next year.....and it's worth a great deal more than I paid for it. BUT, you pay your money and its your call.

    • @michaelhorn8962
      @michaelhorn8962 Před 5 lety +1

      @@LG-kl3co True, the value of a quartz watch is definitely NOT in its movement. And you should never buy one with the intent of it becoming a family heirloom. But that is reflected in the initial purchase price, and the cost of maintenance. (What does it cost to have a Rolex serviced through an AD these days?) I would agree that most quartz watches are, ultimately, disposable (although the one I received as a service award at work is still running fine after over 18 years of rough usage), so I guess it all depends on what you're expecting to get out of a watch, and what it's worth for you to pay. BTW: Have you SEEN what an old Rolex Oysterquartz goes for today?

      does she wind it up ever? Self winding watches need to be wound, when ever they are allowed to stop or when brand new. You unscrew the crown and in the neutral position rotate the crown clockwise 30 times, set time then the date.

      She is a person who values practicality in a watch rather than whatever it is that makes some of us love very high quality mechanical timepieces. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being that way but I am rather confused as to why someone who only has annoyance over adjusting a mechanical watch and doesn't like a jewellery-grade bracelet and watch would even buy one in the first place. It doesn't make any sense to me. She has something truly beautiful and a masterpiece of mechanical engineering and she is annoyed with interacting with it to set the time once per week? She really should have bought something else.

    Why hasnt anyone pointed out that the comparison is irrelevant? That was made intentionally, but, honestly, it can work out with noobies only. We had a 30k JLC and a quartz caliber from a 50 buck watch. Why wasnt that a JLC vs a quartz Patek? Or at least a Grand Seiko? And the same the other way: why not a bare Sellita vs that quartz one? The answer is too obvious.
