Lovely review. Agree with all of that. Great to see the different elements you found within it and how different tracks reveal different things to different people. I’ll get to fifty plays eventually! :)
There’s so much to explore in the album. The two versions are so different but closely related enough to see some of the intricacies between.
Of the reviews I have written this year, it was the one I had to think most clearly about.
    And yes, it’s a masterpiece

I called the sound of this album as exquisite. I posted link for your interview on my video.

Hey buddy - I spun this album about six times over the weekend. It's pretty damn special. I knew there was some hype around this one, but this time the result outweighs the hype. Vibes of The Satanist crossed with Bladerunner for me. Ihsahn's vocals are superb throughout - incredible diction and clarity which makes for a much more engaging listen. BTW your interview with the man himself was far superior to the effort Metal Hammer did - well done! All the best buddy! S.

Oh man thanks so much Steve! You’re too kind honestly; it’s very very much appreciated and I have to say I didn’t think of combining Blade Runner and The Satanist but that is a fantastic spot and I totally agree. Glad that you enjoyed the interview so much and this is definitely front runner for album of the year! That’s definitely because I helped out on it either haha - I count this as something that I worked on before starting at Spinefarm haha

I loved all of Ihsahn's work up until Arktis. I kind of fell off after that, but after hearing "Pilgrimage to Oblivion" I was really keen to check this album out. I have gone through the whole album once, but I want to take the time to give this album a completely immersive listen, and enjoy the experience of taking it all in. I also have to shout out the album Life Promised Death by Farsot. It is a fantastic avant-grade black metal album that would pair well with Ihsahn's self-titled record.

Listened to the orchestral version while working today, looking forward to hearing the full version.

So now that it's been out for a good while, what did you think of the orchestral version and the metal version? Would love to see what you thought! Also sorry that it's taken me an age to get back to you my friend. Appreciate the support as ever!

An incredible album, it catches you from the first listen. Amazing.

I couldn't agree more my friend. I remember the first listen through that I had of this was in the Universal offices with Vegard present and it was a hell of an experience. I had no idea that I would be working it a couple of months later haha! But yes, it was really fascinating and I think that there are so many layers to this release as well. Truly a fantastic jewel of a record.
