We would be playing in the street and could hear the DDT truck coming. As soon as it turned the corner and started down our street we would scatter like cockroaches and run into the nearest neighbor's home. Once the truck past by we would wait until the smell dissipated (about 5 minutes) before heading back out. I was always intrigued by the guy on the back of the truck spraying that stuff in a big cloud of poison. This was the mid to late 1960s in the suburbs of Baltimore.

Imagine questioning this and being described as “not believing in science”. We live in the world where you cannot
    question science with impunity.

All that the spraying in my neighborhood (maybe once a year) has done is make the mosquitoes bigger and kill the butterflies, bees and lightning bugs.

You dirty conspiracy theorist. This DDT method was approved by scientific authorities by specialists of the CDC! The politicians and TV guys approved it! What are you going to say next, that Crispr m-rna modifying vaccines are not safe?

While the side effects are regrettable, completely eradicating mosquitoes is not the goal of space spraying (as that is almost entirely infeasible). The purpose of space spraying is to eradicate enough disease vector insects that the infections die out due to the statistical improbability of host being found.
Even for all of its negative effects, DDT was really a marvel of its time. It eradicated malaria in most of Europe and North America, caused a drop in bed bug infestations from 30% of homes to ~3%, and more. It is truly a shame it turned out to accumulate over time.

The government used to spray children with DDT and claimed it was preventing polio but it gave them polio. They sprayed them while in the public pool and along the sidewalks. Some of my friends were sprayed and got polio and now they died a long time ago.
