The Truth About American Towns That Welcome Refugees

  • Immigration has proven to be one of the most divisive issues in the 2016 presidential race. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have expressed that the system is broken, but a consensus on any solution seems untenable. In this video, Atlantic national correspondent James Fallows and contributing writer Deborah Fallows ventured across the country to bridge the disconnect between national political rhetoric on immigration and the realities in migrant communities. They travelled to three American states-Pennsylvania, California, and Kansas-to understand the economic benefits that immigrants bring to the small towns they most often reside in.
This documentary was produced for American Futures, an ongoing reporting project from James and Deborah Fallows. The couple has spent three years exploring small town America by air, “taking seriously places that don’t usually get registered seriously.”

I live in Ontario Canada and our Prime Minister did exactly the same thing...he did say he was letting in 5000 refugees in our city but three days later just before Easter another 3000 were snuck in...we have no housing for them and what housing we do have isn't good enough they say so they are put into the most expensive hotels we have which has upset alot of people here...they are not true refugees they are migrants who were already in other countries...many refuse to work saying they are here for free money...we have had other young girls sexually attacked but the media pretends it doesn't happen ...noone gets charged people are told to understand they are used to that...so no one is intigrating the migrants...many have flooded over the border in Quebec and also Manitoba as well as Vancouver once Trump said no more welfare to them there....I do not agree that our country can support these people and they want sharia law here which is going to start a civil war.... Trudeau had better go ! Let's have eight thousand of them in his hometown in one week and see how he feels then when his wife and daughter are assaulted.

Well you also dont hear about why some of the refugees exist and why they are here. Take the Hmong people, i am one of them. Our people aided the CIA during the Laos Kingdom’s Civil War against communists from both the Vietnamese and the Laos Governement that soon followed suit in being communist. I dont really care for the what political parties people line themselves up to be with, but what you think you know is often less than what’s really even provided to you. Our people have long been oppressed by larger governments like China and the USA with layers upon layers of propaganda as well as Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. After the WW2 which also spread into Indochina, most of the world did not hear about how truly horrible it was for the people in south East Asia during US operations and after US operations. The Hmong people were the first of the massive waves of refugees that came to the USA, not because we wanted to-but because what little of our population we had as minorities in Laos barely recognized as citizens, we faced genocide and many that are here today in America or other 1st world countries had to cross the high tides of the Mekong River with children on their backs and to avoid soldiers parents would give opium to their babies so they wouldn’t cry and be revealed when swimming across the river, not all of these babies made it. Bear in mind, we Hmong fought a war we never asked to, but because we had to all thanks to the CIA forcing it upon us with someone who is seen as a leader, but also a drug lord because we had nothing leaving China. We aren’t Chinese but we are from China. When you talk about people using resources, its the government making these big choices, not the victims who had none other than where they can survive in the next place. Our people have had centuries of being 2nd class citizens being banned to practice our own language and culture. I’m not speaking for or against policies, but its not a clean picture like you’d like it to be if you actually did your research like speaking to people who had to deal with the aftermath of these military operations destroying economies of other countries and inflicting genocide after they’ve decided to disband operations and US involvement. I’m glad many of you think about money, but it’s sad many of you dont think about the lives

Please educate yourself. Refugees do not choose what country to go to. They are placed in a certain country after years in the camps, and their fate is decided by the countries themselves. Our government sets priority for certain people groups, and (after a long process of security screenings and interview) the state decides which families will be placed in what city. It comes down to Resettlement agencies capacity to help certain cultural groups (for instance, a city with kinyarwanda speaking resources will get more Congolese refugees), and other factors such as the family's health needs, etc.

Know where they do work though? Construction, food industry, house cleaning and a bunch of other jobs that Americans would love to have. On top of that a lot of them don't work at all. 75% of Central and South American immigrants are on welfare assistance and 100% of illegal immigrants that cross the border are homeless and unemployed and guess who picks up the tab. 200 billion dollars spent every single year on illegal immigrants. I think we'll be all right without them. I'm sorry but saying employers will be forced to pay a legal minimum wage doesn't exactly tug at my Heartstrings. It was a valiant effort though.

It’s about time that the UN were brought under the spotlight, especially how they are funded, the background of the hierarchy their objectives and how they meet those objectives. The worldwide issues associated with multiculturalism and refugees seems to stem from the UNs failure to do the job for which it was originally formed .... i.e. to help maintain peace and order where needed so that major conflicts are avoided. Why the UN is failing, is unclear but all those that are involved in the unsustainable refugee industry seem to be doing very well out of it, largely at the expense of the UN signatory countries and the long-term misery of the refugees who cannot out run the conflicts and those that can, end up becoming increasingly alienated in the places of refuge. Time to put a stop to the moral blackmail and to call the UN to account.

They came in the spring and worked ranches and farms and left at the end of harvest. Some came for 20 years to the same people! There were virtually no crime as all wanted to make money to send home. Migrant = temporary movement within the borders of the same country, or cross international borders.
Immigrant = permanent residency, when a person crosses an international border and becomes a permanent resident in another country.
    Economic migrant-
choose to move in order to improve the future prospects of themselves and their families

Topics like this interest me. Wonder what is a country? Is it fixed or is it in a state of constant flux? Not wanting immigrants suggests something very conservative to me. Everybody kind of knows everyone else without having met them because they are all the same (generally speaking). Allowing immigrants changes that because they bring another set of beliefs. And maybe they will accept everything the host country gives them or they might reject all of it or just some parts (and just use economic/safety/stability advantages, if they exist). This video was made in 2016, I'm writing in 2020 so I wish there was a follow up to watch.

Old fashioned immigrants came to the U.S. through an orderly process that included screening for diseases and also the ability to contribute to the country. However, most of today's immigrants are just a bunch of welfare cases (like low income families with 3,4,5,6 children) who come here to get social services. If mass immigration is such a good thing, why is California a socio-economic and environmental dump?

Erie Pa muslims seem different, i live in Erie and Erie has a very conservative minority population of muslim here. Have talked to a few of them and they admit there are violent verses in the koran but they refuse embrace those verses and teachings of violence. They have assimilated themselves into Erie's society and work in careers that are forbidden for them to work in like the gambling industry the horse racing industry, medical industry and other places that they have to treat non muslims and fellow muslims alike with respect. I have observed one particular mosque here where the front entrance is used by men , women and children, where traditionally i have seen videos where there is a separate entrance for men and another for women and children. But at this one mosque all muslim parishioners use the one front entrance together and from the conversations i have had with muslims, the men women and children all worship in the same room, not separate rooms as traditionally i have seen elsewhere. Now when i go to other place in the Erie county area, they have the darkest cruelest looks they give you and it burns right through as if you know what they are thinking. The difference between Erie conservative muslims and the more liberal hardcore muslims from other areas around Erie county are like night and day, so different. Explains why in muslims countries there different factions of muslims the more peaceful ones that embrace freedom and the very violent hardcore ones that will kill you on a whim if you looked at them crooked. That same scenario plays out in the Erie county area, the peaceful ones that refuse to follow the violent teachings of the koran and the more violent ones outside the city that are very stout and hardcore and won't hesitate to hurt you. One only needs to look to Dearborn Michigan where the violent sect of muslims live to see the vast difference between hardcore muslims and the ones in the city of erie who chose to assimilate into american soceity.

I agree--why not mention Deerborn and Minneapolis, because they tell the truth about immigration. Small amounts like the towns mentioned, it works. But mega masses like Minneapolis and Deerborn did not. The immigrants in the towns shown had jobs and seemed to want to be in America. There are others who hate America .
As far as stopping illegal immigration, from Mexico and afar, let them come in legally. The first system where documented farm workers came in seemed to work. But Obama's seemed to open a can of worms.
Also, if farmers paid the American workers a decent wage, maybe they wouldn't have to depend on illegal workers.
As a young girl, i am now 67, i worked picking peas, beans, cukes, peaches, plums, cotton and peppers. The pay was very low and made me determined to get an education.
If the farmers treated the nisi local workers better, he might get local help. In the south, employers and farmers still believe in the right to work law - which basically means you either accept whatever low pay i give or you don't work.
The system in England with documented migrant laborers is much better than the one used in America. The documented immigrant in England gets a fair wage for work done---America still pays like slave labor.

Mr Jones That isn't what i've found out about the net result of immigration financially. It costs the U.S. more than is generated by illegals and middle eastern refugees. At least, though, the middle eastern refugees in the U.S. probably are actually refugees, unlike the huge wave of "refugees" that forced their way into Europe's countries in the last couple of years. Many of them were young men who left their women and children back in the war torn countries. There obviously is no one simple truth about this immigrant situation, but to say the net result is that they add to a country economically is just nonsense.

What the hell is "DEMOGRAPHIC VITALITY" anyway? We never used such terms before during many waves of immigration. There is no assimilation encouraged any more, multi-culti has taken its place. And today's immigrants turn out to be the least likely to assimilate anyway because their culture and ours have been incompatible going back a thousand years. They study that history, WE DON'T. I am speaking of Muslims. Today we are Balkanized and there is no cultural adhesion. Many Muslim groups actually work against compatibility with Americans. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is a perfect example, and now, she is actually using ballot harvesting, (bought) to collect thousands of illegal votes for herself. $200-$800 a pop. She is either going to prison or headed for deportation OR BOTH, along with her colluding cohorts. So much for "DEMOGRAPHIC VITALITY"...shoved down our throats for decades and we are finally vomiting it up in the faces of the libs. I hope they choke on it.

There is also a huge difference between Legal and Illegal immigration! As they say some workers are necessary but what about the rest who flock to the cities and feed gangs, crime, poverty. Etc? Where is the interview there?

I had to stop after 4 min. Like he said, 'it's not allowed', so the more Muslims that come in, the more mosques are built, the more Islam is taught and he won't be a dealer in a casino anymore. In fact, he could be the next jihadist to cover his bad deeds as a dealer/trainer. The end goal for any Muslim is for Islam to rule. Lebanon of the 70's was a Christian majority democracy and fell due to the welcomed invited peaceful acting Muslims who seemed to enjoy vacationing there, doing things not allowed in Islam or their home countries. Lebanon is now an Islamic state. Once they feel comfortable with their strength in numbers, the call to jihad is given. Lebanon saw professionals and neighbors who worked and came over to cookouts one week were killing the next in the workplace and neighborhoods; even Dr's in the hospitals they worked at. The 'religion' allows you to lie and befriend the 'infidel' long enough to get your foot in the door, multiply through outbirthing the 'infidel', infiltrate government positions like as mayors and higher-ups, and end up being the majority where laws are then changed. Then those seeking a one world government (United Nations, European Union), as does Islam, the 'left' join them and we find ourselves in the Book of Revelation with Islam as the enemy, worship to an image (probably Mohammad) with the threat of beheading (Islam's favorite go-to) for not submitting. The 'mark' in the hand or forehead will guarantee sharia-compliant business transactions with no others allowed. And the world just gave into Satan's plan and hand; some not knowing any better and some not trusting God to begin with, yet all are defeated by Him in the end, including Muslims because 'Allah' may mean 'god' but he isn't God The Almighty, the God of Abraham (his wife Sarah), Issac and Jacob because Islam believes Ishmael was the child of promise, Hagar (the bondservant) was Abraham's wife, therefore, Ishmael's half-breed descendants are jealous and fight for inheritance that doesn't belong to them, even the whole world. Mohammad thought he saw and heard from Gabriel, but Satan 'transforms himself as an angel of light' and Mohammad didn't know any better but... being a descendant of Ishmael... and the fight continues while you feel sorry for the millions of military-aged men that walk, boat, and climb thousands of miles and still have the strength to kill, rape, fight, and take over whole cities yet they 'were fleeing a few thousand ISIS members'.
