- Few had reckoned on this scenario: another Gaddafi vying for power. Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi is the second son of the Libyan dictator Muammar Al Gaddafi, who was killed in 2011. Now, Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi is a candidate in Libya’s presidential elections.
Statements from relatives and political actors paint a portrait of an unpredictable and fiercely determined man. Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi’s presidential bid is a major challenge for Libya. The second son of the Libyan dictator Muammar Al Gaddafi has been convicted several times in Libya and is being prosecuted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi has had an unusual life: he grew up a clan that operated with a high degree of paranoia, suspecting conspiracies at work everwhere. Later, he led a playboy lifestyle in Europe, presenting himself to the world as a reformer. In the second phase of his life, which began with the Libyan revolution of 2011, he perpetuated the repressive style of his father’s regime. He was taken prisoner by anti-Gaddifi militias who made him stand trial -- but only allowed him to take part via videolink.
Everyone in Libya is talking about him, all kinds of rumors are doing the rounds, his life is under threat. People say he’s a crazy, sick mystic who’s absconded into the desert. What’s making him run for president, despite the death threats? Does he stand a chance of winning? What does he know about the secret machinations of his father’s regime? His eventful life mirrors the current chaos in Libya: a country divided, with one government in the east and another in the west, rival militias vying for power and foreign states influencing the conflict. As a Libyan, we would never think that would happen to us in million years, we never knew what war is, the country was one of the safest and has welcomed every nation through the years, we don’t deserve this .

But when it comes to Africa, they somehow find the time and resources to create a complex and misleading documentary.

Democracies dont work in middle eastern countries. Gadaffi stopped sub saharan migrants from getting to the Mediterranean shore. Since he was killed, Europe has been swamped by them.
This man bears the guilt of exposing his father to death. He literally designed a new democratic constitution in partnership with scholars in Europe and America. He convinced his father to reunite with the west. He is a democrat. I am not Libyan and I am not even a Muslim but what the west did to this man pricks my heart. He was ready to be as democratic as the west wanted him to be. But what he didn't know is that they didn't want democracy, they wanted oil, a lot of oil, all of the oil, even if it meant destroying what was Africa's most civilised and most prosperous country. Libya didn't rise against Gaddafi, NATO did.

True. Unfortunately, most of that man's supporters believe it is Europe's right to steaI from other countries even if they don't say it out loud. Even if they knew this would alleviate their frustration, they wouldn't want it, as that would mean less wealth and power for Europe. So the European left wingers (the real ones, I'm not talking about neo-cons posing as liberals) who respect sovereignty will end up being the ones to solve the issue, as only they will be happy for Europe to leave Africa alone. Despite what the other side claims, their unhappiness with immgrants comes from a hatefuI attitude towards other peoples, not from a desire to preserve culture.

I wish they hadn't removed Muammar Qaddafi. My attitude was if they were to remove him, then put boots on the ground and make sure the country doesn't fall apart and elections could be held. They overthrew him and let it collapse into factions.
"Boots on the ground" is the biggest problem-no country has ever solved its issues with bombs or Western intervention. Real change comes from within. The so-called Arab Spring was a web of lies spun by the Western media. Why is it that only the countries destroyed by the Arab Spring were the ones opposed to U.S. interests-like Syria and Libya? Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia remained untouched, and when Egypt's fledgling democracy was crushed, the West didn't bat an eye. It's clear where their true priorities lie.

Libyan here, it's true that Gaddafi was a dictator in political terms, but the country was safe and stable. Right now it's all chaos & crime in my country. Saif Al-islam was considered a progressive & he made a lot of good projects to develop the country in the last 6_7 years of his father's era. Meanwhile, I feel that Saif has changed after all what happened to him & his family and that he's coming to take revenge.

I despise Gaddafi, but you are misrepresenting that speech, even your translation isn't accurate, he discussed what happened and the nature of Libyan tribal society, and warned that if the central government collapsed, the tribes would fight over the country's wealth, and the oil will flame the fire that will burn the country, his predictions came true, and that speech is one of the reasons why many look up to him today, they say: Saif was right.
