- We went undercover in India to reveal the pitch made by some education recruitment agents with financial connections to colleges in Canada. Lured by the promise of a quality post-secondary education and a chance to build a life here, thousands of foreign students arrive every year and find what they were promised - and what their families paid for - often isn’t what awaits them.

The UK faced the same situation about a decade ago, which resulted in the closing down of all colleges that were there only to provide visas to international students.
How many students studying at those private colleges were actually serious students? Do yourself a favour and watch Border Security UK on youtube and you will see how many fake students were "studying" at these private colleges , just to get their post graduate work permit.
Indians don't belong in the UK either. Go home.
Has the situation improved now? Please enlighten me. I want to study abroad. And I don't want to fall into traps like these. Some days ago I saw a post on IDP's page which stated that students can now work for longer hours in Canada to boost the Canadian economy which had collapsed after the Pandemic. After seeing this video I have a feeling that it was a trap to attract more students.

@@MarinafromPakistan In the UK, the situation improved now. However, the number of students coming to the UK after re-introducing post-study visa (PSW) has gone up by several folds. Further, the UK economy is also not doing very well at the moment. So, it may be difficult to get part-time work during the studies and a full-time job after completing studies. This year >1L Indian students came to the UK for studies. If each pays 10K pounds per year (I know students pay much more as a tuition fee for masters in science/tech. subjects), which is equivalent to 1 Billion pounds. So, the UK and other Western countries are interested in improving their economy by attracting overseas students, who pay higher tuition fees than the home students.
There is no incentive to stop this because the universities and colleges are banking a fortune on these Indian students. Not only education institutions but landlords and local businesses take advantage of the situation by overcharging and exploiting them for very low wages. it's become a big problem and it needs to be addressed more.

The landlords have hurt even Canadians who found themselves having to move during these tumultuous times. The government talks a great deal about solutions to the housing problem but have never mentioned anything about correcting the rental situation! Those who cannot afford to buy a house are being gouged by landlords. The next generation of middle class Canadians is going to have to live with their parents for a long time, won't be able to afford the rent, the education, let alone buy a house!

the amount of international students Canada is accepting is not sustainable. There's not enough student housing or part time jobs. The colleges and universities have taken advantage of both domestic and international students.
Working with hundreds of Indian international students over the past year has shown me that there is no way the majority of them have legitimate university degrees.

This makes so much sense and I understand why there are so many international students in canada. I knew a guy who would recruit people for work in Canada and he would get paid 2000 or so per person. It's like importing slaves and slave labour. I guess we all get exploited at some point.

This is very sad. As a canadian, I hope this tuition scam stops because it's not only hurting individuals coming to Canada with false hope, but also hurts the canadian house/job market greatly for locals.
As a university educator, this has been going on for years. Education has become commoditized. It is taking its toll on educators as well.
When I was in college studying in a postgraduate program in international business. I found that most of the class can barely speak and write in English. When I was doing group assignments, I had to do basically 100% of the work cuz my group members can hardly write anything readable. I was not enrolled in one of those sketchy private colleges, I was in a legit public college for god sake🤦🏻♂️

I graduated uni in Canada in 2010. Since then, the school and neighbourhoods surrounding it are unrecognizable due to the massive increase in int'l students.

The system was not made for international students' benefit or local Canadian students benefit. As a local Canadian I was homeless during university. It all just goes to landlords, politicians, and retirees.

When i went to Canada for my studies in 2015 at Fleming College, the class had only four international students. Three Indians and one Nigerian.
In 2017, the same class admitted 100+ Indian International students and 3 Canadian students.
I left Canada in 2016.
It's not worth spending so much money to live in a Tundra, just to pay taxes.

As a former international student in Canada who’s gone through all of that; the harsh winters, super high tuition, homesickness, employment uncertainty..
my advice, RESEARCH BEFORE YOU COME TO CANADA. Getting here is easy, staying here and thriving is a whole different story.
You will have to work doubly hard, adapt quickly, have a fortitude of steel, and please TAKE CARE OF YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH.

My parents arrived in the 70s. It was harsh and worse.
Fifth estate is actually one of the last credible and legitimate journalists around. Im proud you guys are still able to dive into these issues with cited stories and supporting evidence.
It sucks we can only get so far before it gets too messy to follow or it’s a “legal” loophole, at that point it becomes theory without proof so it’s hard to nail down whatever establishments are responsible.

Thank goodness I chose the United States for my education. In 2010, I had two options -Texas A&M University and University of Waterloo. I thought of Waterloo at first (being top university in Canada vs 15th in US) as I was naive, but Texas A&M gave me teaching assistantship which meant 100 % tuition scholar and monthly stipend. Being from a lower middle class family in India, I took the option.
Even 13 years down the line, that was the best decision of my life. I had chance to work with best researchers and professors in world, work in highly funded research labs, publish papers and patent and later get good job in my domain.
I never aimed for green card and moved back to India. I applied for Canada and even received ITA but didn't go ahead. Things are not perfect but even today in India, most people are impressed by some niche work I did in US.
I am thinking about doing MS in USA .

I didn’t know this documentary would trigger me so much but I couldn’t hold back my tears. I came to this land in hope for fulfilling my dreams. I have faced it all, shady employers, crazy landlords, sharing bathroom with others. I have felt so lonely here and I had no one to go to.Thank you so much for making this documentary. I really wish people back home research before coming here. It’s really sad how much we give up to come here.
Update: Everyone asking me to do my research or give up, I have already passed my initial student phase. I did not go to a sham Uni. I went to Algonquin College. Currently I am an assistant teacher and living a very comfortable life in Ontario. My comment wasn't to discourage anyone or gain sympathy, I just happen to get so emotional because I felt represented atleast in one way or the other.

In my country, it's an open information that "studying" in Canada actually means mainly working while studying on the side. Canada needs the cheap labor.

As I have commented earlier, all the Canadian government has to do is bring in contract workers, like what the countries in UAE have been doing. This way, education is not used a front to enter, stay and work.

@@Whatisnottaken the way you frame it makes it seem that the UAE government is actively invovled in signing contracts with individual workers. That's not the case. The law simply allows a private company to present a job contract to a person and sign it and bring the person on a a visa. The employer need not prove if the person's job cannot be filled by a local unlike a sponsored Work Visa in Canada
I really feel for students who are scammed. But being an international students myself, and as a young adult, I did my research on the rent, job market, living costs of the city I was going to: Vancouver. I knew it wasnt gonna be easy from the get go, I struggled but dedicated to school and to my part time job. My personal experience was that most of these students do not focus on their assignments and rely on others to do their part. It was 10x more stressful and, sadly, my strategy to survive (and my friends’) school was to avoid doing school projects with students from one particular country. And worst yet, professors would turn a blind eye to this systemic situation cause I guess everyone was paying their tuition fees.

This guy lives on a beautiful farm in India, obviously makes good money (if he can afford a western lifestyle for his child) and wants to send his daughter to Toronto where 99% of people are depressed work horses living paycheque to paycheque in a dystopian concrete jungle LMFAOOOO like whaaaaaaaaat.

I am a part time lyft driver I had this passenger once he was Indian, he told me about himself and this was about a year ago who had come to Canada to "study" he literally told me he was working two jobs and at the same time having someone else attend his online class that was in Kelowna. He was living Surrey, I asked why can't he attend it himself and also said he has a lower chance of passing the class so he a rather pay for it and have someone else achieve his grades for him. This country is going in the wrong direction. Shame on people who come here and take advantage of the genuine system we have.

In the USA you basically cannot work as a student unless it is on the campus itself. It's very hard to get a legal job as a student here on student visa, of course you can always get a job under the table.

I heard about the suffocating pressure, loneliness and high suicide rates of international students from a university admin over 10 years ago and I'm shocked it only escalated!
Why "shocked" that it has escalated? Obviously, if the number of international students in Canada has increased so will the number of suicides.

It’s just that these people can’t even afford there tuition fees so why come to Canada .

@@eduardotorres3457 I remember one guy in my program was from Chile, it was 4x more expensive for his registration fee and tuition, he didn't pay the bill for the last year and never officially got his degree. I think he was fine with it, in the end we realized nobody cared about that piece of paper that much. As far as I know he's doing great now!
I did agree with the loneliness part. It stuck me as a international student. Till then I never experienced loneliness in my life so never knew the true meaning of it

Another reason why Canada has a housing crisis (lack of & expensive) is due to colleges & Universities wanting to make more money from foreign students. On average Vancouver area see's about 8 thousand international students taking up local housing making it hard to find & more expensive !

I guess the students want to live in Toronto because there are lots of jobs for the unskilled there? It still makes no sense to me at all. This happened 20 years ago in China. I was one of them. Back then, there was no work permit allowed while studying. I worked under the table for $4 per hour in a restaurant. Luckily I had tips to compensate income. It got me through university. I was lucky to get a good job after graduation. Everything was good afterwards.

We have hosted home stay students for 20 years from all over the world. First it was mostly from Japan and Korea to a private school in Vancouver, and now students from all over the world to the local university. Great experience for our family but it was a real school.
There is a university professor at Toronto university who can’t even find an apartment in another news report. How much of a scam this country has become inside out?

I lived in India because my parents did not have the money to send me abroad. I am supposed to travel to Canada in another 5days with a work permit offered from my current employer in India with a salary which is above average in Canada. As an experienced professional worked in Indian IT market for more than 7 years, I want the Indian students to know that if you are planning to work in core subjects like mechanical, civil, electrical or electronics, only then you should consider this difficult option. Otherwise in India, there is a massive shortage in the IT & Software market. With 5+ years of experience, with right skill you can earn 30-40LPA easily. So be careful before putting your life & your parents' only means of survival at risk.
I left India for work overseas 35 years. We didn't leave home with money, because we left home to earn money not to carry money to a foreign country.

And how are those people going to get PR without atleast a somewhat good education? You need to be in a skilled job to get PR. Those private career colleges won't help. There are many government vocational institutions you could go to like BCIT

I spent 6 years in university and 7 years in college after that.
I had absolutely no idea this was going on. I also didn’t really understand why international students had to pay such a high tuition fee. As a domestic student, I already struggled to pay my tuition fees.
Really? Im domestic too and OSAP grants pay for half my degree + OSAP loans that pay the other half.
It’s heartbreaking. But I wanted to go to ivy leag university but my family could not afford help me so I went locally. You cannot afford foreign education you can’t afford it. Thats that.
Its basically because the government wants to limit newcomers and if the tuition fees werent this high for international syudents Canada would have a flood of students.
That’s unfortunate. There are so many highly skilled people from all over the world.

Where do these people get the idea that just getting any degree in a non-name college is a ticket to success? Be smart. Do your homework. Don’t put your family under pressure. It is really not worth it.
still think most of them do it for the PR which still doesn’t make sense. Have a few internationals in engineering classes who do basically the bare minimum. thankfully for us most internationals do try their best in engineering courses since it isn’t a scam college, but still nuts that there are some that barely try in our engineering courses
The students from Punjab think of Canada as an extension of their state. But sadly the reality is far from the expectation.

This is why I quit my job of 19 years to work for a nonprofit and help international students in various ways and to help them adjust to life here in Canada...thank u for doing this documentary!

So I’m sorry these ppl think that going to school in Canada is some magic ticket to a successful career making great money, but why should Canadians feel bad for these ppl? As each year goes on, I no longer recognize my own country. Our apathy will be our downfall.
Just do one thing, limit number of international students to 60% - 70% in every college. And college cannot be started if rest 30% - 40% of seats for domestic students is not filled first. If any college wants to go for international students only, then their admission process/audit should go through Canadian government. So there is no exploitation of international students.
This is primarily happening in private career colleges which are shady degree mills. These private colleges are nearly 100% foreign students in a generic office building. Yes, private colleges should proabbly be shut down, not sure why the government allows them.

Wow!!! This made me so heartbroken and sad, looking at the plight of International Students and experiencing it firsthand myself, I just want to appreciate the true Journalism The Fifth Estate is doing. This is What true journalism is Putting light on social issues and projecting them for people to think and make corrections in society.
My sister went to Canada to study animation because it was a quarter of the price, faster, and had better employment numbers than our schools in America. Everything went very smooth, she got steady employment that was willing to sponsor her visas and a reasonably straightforward path to dual citizenship.
When we road-tripped up to Vancouver to get her settled, her landlady got upset with us when we pulled out the tools and started to adapt for her a custom bedframe riser. When we checked in to see what we had done wrong, we found her crying on the porch. She said her parents sent her away to Canada without guidance, help, or compassion, and that she was homesick still even 25 years later.
I think the path from America to Canada is still easier... Cultures and language commonality help. If you come fresh off the boat from Punjab India the culture and isolation shock can be a lot .

Currently, I'm studying in Canada and this video opened my eyes to the dark side of Canadian college that I never knew about. What I can say is never let your guard down. I did the research, I picked the right college. Even in Canada, I stay alerted. Only by staying strong and resilient, the Canadian dream might come true.

This is truly heartbreaking, I feel so sorry for International Students who came here with dreams but were given something far below that. I am a Canadian born student, brought up and raised in Brampton but I made friends with many international students. I don't understand how International students have to pay 3-4x our tuition, cover their living expenses, and have work restrictions on their study permit. The truth is competion is everywhere and companies are competing for top students who go to credible universites. I don't see how international students are suppose to compete with these students when there is a shortage of high-paying jobs. I truly feel bad. I advise students to tell their stories to their younger siblings and cousins back home and prevent them from living a hard-working life with little reward. Advise them to complete their studies back home and find a job in big cities back home. As a domestic student I struggle to pay for my own expenses and I could not imagine if I did not have my parents support. This is fraud on another level!!!

Actually, the top Indian colleges are very competitive and difficult to get into. Most of these students you see going out of India could not actually convert the better Indian Universities. With growing "social" culture, there is always a need to show a better life to the community. You can't do that with an average life in India. So a lot of these kids choose to go outside with the hopes of the New World. Alas, the reality is the same everywhere.

High tuition fee is not limited to Canada alone. I came from a South American country and our tuition for foreign students were higher that that of our citizens
