Completely agree with you. I just posted this as a reply to someone else, but it pretty much fits here too: I just think it's hilarious that she mocks young boys sense of masculinity when we expose children to masculine and feminine things all the time (GI Joe, Barbie, cars/trucks, dolls, wagons, soap box cars, etc). Yes, at the age of 5 I guarantee that most children have a sense of masculine and feminine....and that sense grows, changes, matures each year....as it should. Even at the age of 5, I (a young boy) held Mom's hand and "safely escorted her" across the street after she had surgery. Partly because she was Mom, and partly because that's the job of me as a boy. Bri really needs to stop mocking kids just because they haven't gone through puberty yet. (Or, maybe my escorting Mom was just a rural country thing.)

Honestly it made me feels sorry for the men that watched it who didn't even realize that it was calling them simple-minded right to their faces. My main takeaway from the movie was that apartheid will eventually reach a boiling point and result in uprising. Somehow, I haven't met many people who saw that parallel for some reason.

    Let's be honest here
Since the inception of the Barbie doll in the 50's or 60's, when was it created to empower men? Ken never has any identity in the Barbieverse. I actually appreciated that the movie showed Ken's identity crisis.Barbie isn't a movie or concept to empower men
Never has been. It is for girls and women.

I didn't see the movie as it wasn't for me. I'll take Briahna's word for it. I saw it as the live action dream come true for women of all ages, like the Marvel comic book guys had the Phase 1-3 MCU...just not as well written. Now we have to see Robby Soave's Halloween costume.

Honestly, I can't think of anything else for feministic than what Shakira has done here.
Based on how she described this, after her son's watched Barbie, the portrayal of masculinity in the movie fostered a sense that, somehow, because they are male, they are tainted, disgraced, stigmatized and even inferior in society. The movie created this sense that men are "anti-human" and women are "pro-human." In other words, the movie promotes misandristic and gynocentric values.
Shakira realized that this is how the movie has made her son's feel and that those thoughts of being the "anti-human" of humanity, that mentality, would seriously cause harm to their mental psyche and affect how they view and navigate this societal world.
Her instinct to object, reject, and challenge this kind of destructive influence on her children exemplifies her feministic proclivity to protect and nurture, especially in regards to her own children. This is feminism it its purest form.
    Tell me I'm wrong.

In addition to Robbie’s criticism, the entire film pointed just about every man in a negative light-as either an idiot or a misogynist, or both. Imagine for a moment that a film in 2024 did this to its female characters across the board. It would be met with widespread condemnation. But Barbie was met with nearly universal praise. This is the state of feminism in the “me too” era, and echos the kind of neo racism we see today against whites. Empowerment of a historically marginalized group does not necessitate the disempowerment of others. This is not the way forward into a more inclusive and fruitful society.

I haven't seen the movie yet.. but is it not the point of the movie that Barbie Land is a fake world created for Toys .. and the real world is the world that matters. Barbie Land remains this unequal imaginary construct where the women don't have to deal with male power.. it's a safe space but the real world is an unforgiving place where the work needs to be done. Ken was NEVER a male role model. The joke about Ken that we've all understood is that he is an ACCESSORY to Barbie's life.. he's just a token "boyfriend" but he has no other point.. he's not a soldier like G.I. Joe or Steve Austin or a Transformer... he's just that guy with Barbie.

I no watch 'Barbie.' It one of those question in life, that if someone ask you . . you see 'Barbie?' . . and even if you a dude and you have strong opinion how it an awful movie, they still trick you, go see it. Margot Robbie calling women 'Barbies,' it a weak gesture of 'inclusion.' I do like Ferreira, though. Coupla odd movie, make big wave, last year, 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer.' I did see latter, and it that 'fool me twice' thing, that keep me from, watch 'Barbie.'
