    Haaland is playing in the wrong team.
    Because Pep's philosophy is to never lose possession, he can never get the service he wants(it's only really de Bruyne that gives him it). He wants the ball played quick and direct. He wants the chaos of a transition, but that hardly ever happens with City.
    He would be the perfect player for Liverpool, the way they play on the transitions. He wouldn't miss half the chance Darwin has.

    They seem very reluctant to send the ball to Haaland. There was one time where Erling came back, received the ball and started a rush. Haven't seen that in a while. He passed it as they were approaching the box but it was goos to see him run again. I think he no longer fits into the style of play that City have adopted. They want a target man who draws defenders towards him and creates space for others. As much as I don't want to say it, I think it's time to move on so he is free to do what he does best.

    He is misfit, in that City want to walk the ball into the net, They rarely look to drop the ball over the shoulder of the defender and let Haaland run. Take last nights game, Madrid did sit off, but City also pushed them back and thus created no space for Haaland to operate.
    Although he scored a lot of goals especially last season, I don't think City's style of play is suited to his game.

  • @HelgeKS
    @HelgeKS Pƙed 12 dny +7

    "misfit" is a harsh word. Haaland's done ok with City (83 goals in 92 games isn't all that bad...) , but I don't think this team plays to all of his strengths. With Dortmund and Salzburg (and Molde for that matter) he thrived on through balls creating havoc with his speed and clever runs. He had teammates who fully understood him; Reus and Sancho, in particular. Haaland was also much more involved; drifting wide as well as being pivotal in link up play in the midfield. It seems Pep has asked him to stay up front, which makes him much more stationary and hence easier to mark. Haaland is perfect for counterattacking teams like Dortmund. City's obsession with keeping the ball ironically make Haaland look average. He still makes the runs and I don't know how many times I've screamed at the telly when a teammate chooses to make sideway or backward pass instead of taking the chance of a throughball. It is as if the team has decided that he is not allowed to be involved unless the ball is in the box.

    Finally hearing astute analysis on the situation from everyone in this video instead of the click-baity headlines we hear everywhere else. This new City love possession in the attacking 3rd, but suffer with chance creation against top teams. Haaland is a player who benefits with space behind the defense to attack at pace, but City largely forego this opportunity in favor of unproductive possession. In the first leg, there were plenty of opportunities for Haaland to make a run in behind the left back, opening space in the middle for Foden and others, but he rarely made the run, and City never took advantage of this opportunity.
    When City played 433, they always found a way to attack the half-space and strike on the counter attack. Teams adapted to this, and so did City. Now City have a new style, and teams have adapted to this as well. With Gundo and Mahrez, City were still able to attack this half-space on the underlap, something we still see a bit, but less, with Bernardo and Kevin on the right, now a bit on the left as well, though it usually results in a Bernardo chip to the back post that the defense clears away.
    This system can still work in the biggest games, and a player like Paqueta will help immensely with chance creation and finishing, filling that Gundo role that City miss this season. I think the best thing for them is to adopt a style more like Arsenal, who play in a similar formation, but rarely struggle with chance creation like City. This is all up to Pep really, as I know he runs the team autocratically, and players are hesitant to deviate from his demands. Maybe City are eyeing a winger like Raphina, or someone who plays like Demebele, especially if Bernardo leaves, and this could enable them to attack the half-space more often and more effectively, assuming they adopt a style more akin to Arsenal this season. But, it all starts with the manager, and it's up to him to recognize his deficiencies and opportunities. I hope that once Pep leaves, they will look to a manager like Nagelsmann, more inclined to utilize the space and assets available, while recognizing the value of high counter-pressing, as well as solid defensive structure. Cheers.
