Fiery Crash After Suspect Flees Police | South Phoenix

    Phoenix Police Firebird helicopter noticed a Mini Cooper travelling at a high rate of speed entering the SR-51 Freeway at Glendale Avenue around 11:30 pm Sunday evening.

    The air unit notified ground units who located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from officers at a high rate of speed.

    Ground units pulled back and allowed the air unit to track the vehicle from the air. The suspect exited the freeway and entered the downtown Phoenix area where he drove recklessly, at one point wrong way on Washington Street.

    The suspect then fled south on 7th Street at a high rate of speed eventually crashing into a Hyundai sedan at the intersection of 7th Street and Southern Avenue around midnight.

    Phoenix Police ground units were on scene in seconds and pulled the suspect from his mangled vehicle as it burst into flames.

    Fire crews responded to evaluate the occupants of the sedan and the suspects injuries and extinguish the raging vehicle fire.

    Fortunately no serious injuries were reported and no one was transported.

    According to the Phoenix Police South Mountain Precinct Lieutenant, the suspect has been booked for felony flight and suspicion of DUI among other charges.
