Umm excuse me Jen why are you saying Vintage?! 1983 was just a few years ago not vintage years 😂😂😂😂
Attacked! 😂
I agree. I graduated HS in 1984… that was just a few years ago!
I was born in 81. Does that make me vintage?😂
yep, I was thinking the same thing LOL😂. I graduated high school in 1986
83 was 40 yrs ago 25 is what classic 40 antique isnt it in cars value
1983 was my first year of high school. I was 13. I can remember that my mom, newly single after my dad died in 1981, struggled to feed six kids and would make nearly everything from scratch. She also taught us all to cook, and we'd have one day a week when it was our responsibility to make dinner.
Mom was a very good cook, but she'd resort to shortcuts on occasion. When Mom was in a hurry she'd feed us Top Ramen with diced Spam and peas. (It was not my favorite meal.)
I loved the history lesson you gave as well as the recipes!
The nostalgia was definitely fun.
Haha thank you I had fun putting that together 😂
@@Jen-Chapin😊😊
My mom served canned fruit cocktail back in the 60's. She would evenly divide up the cherries amongst us kids.
My Mom served the canned fruit cocktail too.
Because the cherries were the best part, lol.
I think my cooking might be stuck in the eighties. 😂😂 This was a lot of fun. Thank you.
This was so much fun!! Really cute that you included the history with it! You were spot on with the look! Scrunchies were everywhere! It would be nice to see recreations of 50’s or 40’s dishes too!
Jen did the 50’s a few months ago.
1983…my NYC rent was $375 for a 1 bedroom apt in a private house, contracted my new home build for $79,000, my entire wedding with 175 guests, four limos, a six piece live band, and fancy soup to nuts catering hall, including ten days in Acapulco was $4300! What a difference 40 years makes!
LOL! Canned fruit cocktail was used in every church event potluck salad when I was a kid in the 80’s!!
Oh my goodness…what a fun video! As a child of the 80’s…I LOVED this!!
Fun fact. I was in a K-Mart and won a Cabbage Patch Kid. Elwoood Cyrus is his name. The best day ever for a kid
Great job giving us the fun facts from the 80's. My mom made that salad dressing all the time. I occasionally make it too. I remember my mom, grandma, and aunts using Cheese Whiz
Elwood Cyrus! :)
Fun walk down memory lane! I was 23 in 1983! Not married yet! I’ve never had a crustless quiche! Looks delicious! My mom made Swedish meatballs for holidays!
This was so fun & great research it was spot on - I remember it all feels like yesterday
Love it when you do videos like this! So fun!
You really brought me back to my childhood. Your energy and enthusiasm made the 1983 good journey more special. Thank you so much.
I was 8 years old in 1983! I love and miss the 80’s!
Great video! Thank you for putting so much time and effort into the intro- that was fantastic! I was 8 at the time and remember the cabbage patch kids craze.
I love this video. I was in middle school and remember the Cabbage Patch Kid Christmas craziness. Thanks for the memories.
I’m diggin’ your fun facts! Lots of great memories for me that year as my first child, a daughter, was born in 1983. ❤
Great vid Jen! I thought your take on 1983 was spot on...and now I'm singing " My bologna has a first name..." So thanks for that 😂
Love Fraggle Rock and still watch with my grands. Thanks for the memories!
I can remember this year quite well, I was 11 years old then, boy what a time the 80's were, I really miss it.
What a great idea for a video! Thank you for all the fun factoids and memories at the beginning. In my mind I often think that’s not that long ago but then I do the math. I suddenly realize I am indeed vintage.
Jen ,I love you!!! You NEVER disappoint ❤ Love your outfit and how you always dress the part for your videos🙂
🥰 However, I didn't feel like 1983 was that long ago...seems like I just graduated in 1980😂...then I figured it up and it was 40 years ago😮 ...now I am 61...time flies by fast😢 Thanks for taking us back in time with your meals and the history lesson too❤
I also graduated in 1980, and I don’t think of it as that long ago , but I guess it truly is 😮
@@angelaforcier378 my mind says I am young and 1980 to me truly doesn't seem like that long ago...but like you I guess by others standards it probably is...
We had a huge MASH last episode party. I even took my small TV. Such a good memory.
Oh my goodness, what a blast from the past! I remember everything but the homemade quiche. 😊
Thanks for the walk down memory lane, and the inspiration to try some old recipes. I was 10 in 1983, and I remember most of that little history lesson very well. My mom had a bunch of cookbooks at the time and I loved to look through them! The photography was always so epically bad!
LOL that Kuhn's flyer is from the stores we frequented growing up. Random but made me scream/happy!!!
I was ten years old in 83! I grew up in the best decade ever!!! Loved this...thanks for the memories!❤
Omgosh this was so fun! I was raising my kids in the 80’s so all of your recipes today brought back memories. I love lemon so the cake looks delish. I haven’t made a quiche in so long I’m definitely going to make that this weekend! Thanks for the fun and good memories.
So sorry I am behind! I just added the link to the recipes here: www.jenchapin.net/pl/2148023463
I finally scanned those cookbooks into my cookbook folder - but I LOVED those register cookbooks! We added several recipes to our cooking rota and I use them to this day! Thanks for bringing back the memories.
I love all of your videos! Thank you!
Jen, next time you want to line cake pan with parchment paper simply place pan on pared, trace around, and cut circle inside the traced line to make it a titch smaller to fit pan😉.
Awesome job Jen, I was a junior in high school. The 80’s were the good ole days.
What an amazing year! Thank you for all history and flashbacks for me! I was 2 then. 🤣
I thought this popped in my feed as an old video, since I've been watching Cooking the Books the last couple of weeks (just discovered her.) How exciting that it was just now released. The nostalgia aspect of this is so stinking good.
Great year! This was a fun video.
Thanks, Jen! 🧡
The graphics! So good!
Such a cute baby picture. You look like your Mom, she looks sooo young.
Jen, I really am excited when you do these blast from the past cooking videos. I just turned 62 now. I graduated college with my BA in English and secondary Ed, that year (then I decided that I didn't want to be a teacher after all. So, I put on my big girl clothes (high heals that they called pumps) and went into Manhattan and got a job. That computer you showed is what I worked on. But, my office did not have internet yet. We worked with a program my company installed. Thanks so much for the memories, lol. It was a crazy time and a bunch of fun. I've got to make that potato quiche later today, since I already have all the
Ingredients. You made me so hungry now! 😊❤
This was such a fun video! I absolutely loved the little history lesson also. I remember my mom making a BLT salad. Lunch always seemed to consist of some type of soup and sandwich. Thanks for this great video.
I loved your video. The recipes brought back a lot of memories. I'd love to see more videos like this one.
Love this! I was 7! Nice history.. and awesome food! ❤Take care
What a yummy day of eating!!
I graduated from high school in 1981…I guess I’m vintage too!😂😂
Good memories from your overview🙂 my youngest was born in 1982, and it was kind of a nice time in the world. The cake looks yummy
I remember those recipes! Now, I’m going to research the most popular recipes from the year I was born 😃
Please do more content like this! This was wonderful 👍
I remember watching the Challenger, and we were in shock. So sad 🇨🇦💕
I think the recipe is asking for the Kraft Old English processed cheese spread. 🤪
I loved this video, you make it fun to watch.
I don't remember Very Cherry until a bit later, but I think in the 80s they just HAD more cherries.
If I’m cooking bacon on the stove top to crumble i cut the bacon before putting in the pan. It’s so much easier in my opinion to cut the bacon beforehand.
I loved this!!
Great idea finally some new content from people. Way to go love the idea.
I agree,but now they'll all copycat Jen.
Glad you like it!
Tip: When you spray a pan with oil do it on your opened dishwasher door. So when you wash your dishes the oil that got over-sprayed gets washed off.
What a great video! Thank you so much. We had mostly boxed meals and TV dinners when I was little. Lots of Hamburger Helper, with the occasional tuna casserole tucked in there. The introduction of convenience food was strong. Only on Sundays did we get a nice dinner like you prepared. I also remember my brother and I fighting over the scarce cherries in the fruit salad, lol.
I really loved this video ❤The lemon 🍋 cake ❤️your hair looks cute in a pony tail 😊
I was 7yrs old in 1983, that was only a few years ago, wasn't it?🤔
I remember a lot of these recipes & I'm glad that some of them *stayed* in the 80's!
1983 child here - my mom used to love cheese wiz sandwiches
I Love your pie plate I have several of them! Yes I enjoy your recipes I did remember some of them, thanks!
Loved it!
Such a fun video! 😂🎉
My birth year! Love this video!
I was 6 lol. Thanks for bringing me back to a time I barely remember ;)
Oh, the memories! I still make Swedish meatballs, and spinach salad with warm bacon dressing. So ‘80’s!
Good one - we thought that salad and dressing was super fancy back then! 😊
Jen, where did you get the cookbooks? That's so cool that you have them!!😊
Oh my goodness. I haven't thought about or made quiche or Swedish meatballs for years and randomly decided to make both this week. I think we're on the same wavelength. I might have to add that lemon cake to the meal plan, too.
I remember when my siblings and I used to fight over the cherries in the fruit cocktail.😂
Fraggle rock was a favorite.❤
Miss the 80's. Love the video
Those were the good old days! I love those prices.
Our meals were beef heavy in the 80s. Mom said it’s because they bought a 1/2 cow to save money. We ate a lot of burgers, spaghetti, chili, something she called Johnny marzetti, something else called shipwreck (might’ve been the same thing as Spanish noodles?) and the occasional lasagna for holidays. Oh- and meatloaf. I never had Swedish meatballs until IKEA came around in the 2000s. I loved having dinner at my grandmas because she always served something that was not beef. 😂
So sorry I am behind! I just added the link to the recipes here: www.jenchapin.net/pl/2148023463
Fun video 😅 It reminds me of the "Cooking the Books" channel, she cooks from different cookbooks from different decades
15 days ago I was considered retro, then I turned 40 and I'm vintage now. 🥳
I LOVED this vlog! I grew up in the 80's so it was so fun to see these recipes! Am I missing the links to the recipes? I don't see them. Thank you!
So sorry I am behind! I just added the link to the recipes here: www.jenchapin.net/pl/2148023463
Thank you!@@Jen-Chapin
This was a fun video to watch Jen! 🥰
Enjoyed the video the cake looked so good. We did alot of fondue.
Such a fun video!
Cheese dips and cheese whiz were popular in the 80s. I was in college (University of Northern Iowa) where they served quiche in the dining centers a lot. I didn’t eat it because I really didn’t know what it was at the time!
Fun fact. I grew up, one street away in the neighborhood Sally Ride lived in at that time.
Oh gosh that's cool!
Like TOTALLY COOL Jen...lol! I was a teenager in the 80's with all the valley girl types. Too funny. Like the song "1980 Something" it really was like that too😂 love and hugs from Texas 💕
Great video and recipes!
So sorry I am behind! I just added the link to the recipes here: www.jenchapin.net/pl/2148023463
Awesome. Love the video! TFS ❤️
Thanks for watching!
Love love love this!!
I was 13 in 1983 lol. I watched that final MASH episode. I watched that show religiously.
dont know why but the intro music is reminding me of richard simmons sweating to the oldies lol
Jen, I HOPE you READ this COMMENT...I have a GREAT CHANNEL for you to WATCH....HER channel is called Cooking the Books....she cooks from older cookbooks..wears vintage aprons...cooks a whole day of meals from older cookbooks and uses the older appliances as well as the dinnerware and casserole dishes etc..she's delightful 😊
Probably velveeta, my mom cooked it in soups, grilled cheese, salads- it was cheaper than real cheese. And the fruit cocktail she’d add cool whip as well. And jello seemed to be most of my childhood meals.
Where did you get those earrings? I love them. Did your kids ask what they were?
Well, shoot, I'll be making that quiche next week. It looks good!
I turned 21 in '83 - too much fun!! 😅
Good video! And great excuse to buy more cookbooks :) I have a problem too!
I love this my oldest was born in June 83 in London. I move there because my husband was in the army I hated it. I lived in a village where everyone knows each other and to move to a big city was daunting. I love the recipes you chose too. X
So sorry I am behind! I just added the link to the recipes here: www.jenchapin.net/pl/2148023463
@@Jen-Chapin thank you Jen x
Vintage haha- I was born in 85. 🤣🤣🤣 I didn’t think I was that old yet hahah- even though having a 18 yr old has made me feel old haha
I wasn't born for another 5 years but we defo didnt have lovely food like this even in the 90s. There was a massive recession here in ireland in the 80's early 90's. Food didn't start to get nice here till the celtic tiger years when we got nice restaurants and fancy stuff like ready made puff pastry 😂
My mom made jello molds with canned fruit suspended inside 😂
Yes! Omg I can rememeber my grandma making jello with all kinds of fruit LOL
I’m new here!!! Oh yes, the 80’s!!!! ❤
What I think about the meals is it takes me back🙂 But that lemon cake...I love lemon...it is 2:19 am as I am watching your video and if I had the ingredients I would make it right now ❤ and the fruit cocktail out of a can😆
Your green pan is so cute ✨ Where is it from?
Loved this video 😊 also is it weird using kitchen sheers makes me nervous I’ll slice my finger tips off 😂
That is too funny LOL!
well this video just s lapped me across the face with reality LOL 1993 "vintage" cooking. I am now so old that the 90's are considered vintage and I was in my early 20's. Seriously though, I enjoyed this video, I never really considered the recipes we cooked and the recipes I grew up on as vintage, but I guess time has a way of going by so fast you don't realize just how many years has gone by. My mom always told me not to rush my age because you blink and you are old,, boy she was spot on.
So sorry I am behind! I just added the link to the recipes here: www.jenchapin.net/pl/2148023463
I'm watching the cake recipe wondering if it's going to turn out because cake mixes are 3 oz smaller now than they used to be!
When I was a kid my Mom had this cookie pizza as we called it. I had been searching high and low for the recipe but couldn't find it anywhere. It used M&M minis in the ingredients so I kept googling the ingredients that I could remember (M&M minis, coconut, peanuts, caramel topping) but couldn't find it. One day, I realized they're called M&M BAKING BITS so I googled that instead of minis and WOULDN'T YOU KNOW! This lady had been publishing her family's favorite recipes online for decades. I emailed her to tell her I'd been searching high and low for this recipe for forever and finally found it. It was such a wholesome exchange ha!
Anyway, here's the recipe (circa 1996) from my girl Sue.
(Source: Brighter Baking with M&Ms(r) Chocolate Baking Bits)
**********************************************************
2 c all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 c (2 sticks) butter or margarine
1/2 c firmly packed light brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 c caramel ice cream topping
1 c M&Ms(r) semi-sweet or milk chocolate baking bits
3/4 c shredded coconut
1/2 c dry roasted peanuts
Preheat oven to 350 deg F.
In a bowl, combine flour and baking soda; set aside. Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla and fluffy; add flour mixture just until blended. Dough will be crumbly. Pat dough evenly into greased 12" round pizza pan (a 13 X 9" pan can be substituted). Prick crust with a fork. Bake 15-16 min or until firm.
Spread warm crust evenly with caramel topping. Combine M&Ms(r) Chocolate Baking Bits, coconut, and nuts. Sprinkle mixture evenly over caramel topping; pat down lightly. Continue to bake an additional 5 min or just until coconut begins to turn golden.
Cool completely before cutting into wedges. Store in tightly covered container. Makes 16 wedges.
(I have made this in a 9" fluted tart pan and just pressed all the crust into that and then added half the topping. Would do that again)
