I'm near 60 these days. Been around camp oven cooking, or have personally cooked in a camp ovens since before this bloke was probably born. My mother used to cook dinner over the open fire, in farm kitchen, in a camp oven. I could only watch until old mate put some paper in the camp oven. I've only ever seen city people dig a hole away from the fire or put paper in the camp oven to test the temperature. Personally, I light the fire, wait until it gets to coals, preheat the camp/bedourie oven and put in the roast. Walk away for an hour. Lift the lid to check it and add vegetables then walk away for another hour. Serve. Never lost a roast or had a bad meal yet using that technique. Over complicating things just scares people off from even trying and asking is the effort worthwhile. It was always a simple operation to cook in the cast iron oven, I don't know why people feel the need to make it harder than it has to be. Old man rant over.

The lip around the lid stops the coals from falling in when you lift it up, so you don’t need to keep taking off all the coals every time you open the lid.

You and I both know no one uses a brush, they just tap the lid and lift it up.

Mmm... not a fan of vegetable oil. I've heard you should NOT boil plain water in cast iron, as that will ruin the seasoning? I've also heard you CAN use modern mild soaps (not the ancient lye stuff) because the seasoning is basically a plastic, but the tiny holes in it is why boiling water will lift it off?

Mate, make your gravy using beer. You’re camping, don’t forget! 😉

Nice vid, but isn't "scratchings" deep-fried pork rind? I think the word you're after is "fond".

Your *scratchings* is a UK thing. When camping, what’s left at the bottom of the camp oven, is referred to as scratchings. 😊

That’s what I thought and his (scratchings) as he called it would of been just burnt charcoal

To much heat to soon your better off cooking at a lower temp for longer your meat will be moist and you won’t have burnt drum sticks and wings

I've owned 3 electric ovens, all of them offer top and bottom heat. So did my mum's old gas one.
