Carbs and sugars: what’s the difference? Find out!

    0:25 Carbs vs. sugars clarified
    2:22 What is fiber?
3:01 Processed foods and the glycemic index
    3:42 Starchy vs. non-starchy vegetables
4:22 Bulletproof your immune system *free course!
In this video, we’re going to talk about the difference between carbs and sugars.
On a Healthy Keto diet, you want to keep your carbs under 50g per day-preferably around 20g per day.
Carbohydrates are a combination of starches, fibers, and sugars.
Sugars are smaller carbohydrate molecules. For instance, sucrose is a disaccharide, which means that it is made up of two (di, meaning two) simple carbohydrate molecules.
Fructose and glucose are monosaccharides, which are made up of one (mono, meaning one) molecule.
    Starches are complex carbohydrates.
Complex carbohydrates are broken down into two categories: oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. Oligosaccharides have between 3 and 20 molecules, and polysaccharides have more than 20 molecules.
Then, we have fiber. We deduct fiber from the total carbs because, even though fiber is a carbohydrate, it can’t be broken down by our digestive systems.
Microbes can break down fiber, so fiber is great for supplying your gut microbes with nutrients.
Fiber does not affect your blood sugars like other carbohydrates.
Let’s talk about the glycemic index (GI). The GI tells you how fast a particular carbohydrate turns into blood glucose and affects your blood sugar level.
For example, a raw potato would be relatively low on the GI because the starch isn’t going to break down very quickly. However, cooked potatoes or a bag of potato chips would be much higher on the glycemic index because they are broken down much more quickly, thus causing a spike in blood sugar.
The goal is to consume foods that are low in sugars and carbs but higher in fiber to help keep your blood sugar levels normal.
Some vegetables are very starchy, which means it is high in carbohydrates. Potatoes, carrots, and beats all have higher amounts of carbs compared to leafy greens, asparagus, celery, and broccoli. You don’t have to count your carbs when it comes to non-starchy vegetables.

Love Dr Berg’s approach to healthy eating through understanding the science of our bodies. After jumping on the intermittent fasting keto diet bandwagon, the 20lbs of weight I gained during the pandemic is slowly starting to come off. It’s difficult because the people around me are not aware of this science and they eat purely for pleasure, but I am encouraged when I see my health improving and sadly their health declining. All you can do is work on yourself.

I'm 35 years old expat living in Chennai southern India I've never been to America my entire life so i wish to visit america one day and meet this amazing doctor personally and touch his feet to show my respect for him. I was someone who knew nothing about intermittent fasting or insulin resistance at all so being unaware n habitually food craving I used to eat a lot of ice creams, sweets, cakes multiple times a day because of which I gained lot of weight about 96 kg at 5'8 and I struggled to shed it but one day I happened to see Dr Berg's intermittent fasting video that changed me completely with regards to my diet especially made me very cautious towards sugar, refined carbohydrates consumption ultimately i not just started following intermittent fasting with exercise but also cut down sugar completely because of which I'm in good shape at 80 kgs feeling gr8 most importantly helping myself fall a victim of diabetes

These short videos are very helpful because they concentrate on one thing and explain it fully. I've been very low carb for less than a year and this information is so important. Adding these small things together is a great help in seeing the broader picture. One of the things that truly hit home was from Drs. Michael and Mary Eades book The 30-Day Low Carb Diet Solution. They say that just one good sized potato is the metabolic equivalent of eating a quarter cup of sugar. This helps me explain to a dietician what goes on in my body when they try to explain what healthy eating is to me! Thanks for all this information. I do soak it up and can vouch that it contains zero carbs and does not cause a spike in my blood glucose numbers! This information puts me in charge and keeps me on a steady path to continued wellness.

I saw a documentary recently and the presenter held two skulls. One had perfect teeth and the other had rotten teeth, with many missing. We were asked to guess which skull was oldest. The skull with rotten teeth looked older so most people would assume that the one with perfect teeth was younger. It turned out that the skull with rotten teeth was only 200 years out, while the one with perfect teeth was more than 10,000 years old!
Simply put, sugar has only been with us for a few hundred years.

So, the conclusion is that the guy that ate sugar lived longer, and since the guy that did not ate sugar had a shorter lifespan, we should eat more sugar to live longer. Only that we will die with rotten teeth. LOL 😂

Today I made a step toward Keto. I ordered my grass fed proteins. I get my free range eggs from a coworker. Just trying to eat healthier and if I lose a few pounds along the way, a bonus. This was educational before I do my produce run.
