In this video, we’re going to talk about the difference between carbs and sugars.
On a Healthy Keto diet, you want to keep your carbs under 50g per day-preferably around 20g per day.
Carbohydrates are a combination of starches, fibers, and sugars.
Sugars are smaller carbohydrate molecules. For instance, sucrose is a disaccharide, which means that it is made up of two (di, meaning two) simple carbohydrate molecules.
Fructose and glucose are monosaccharides, which are made up of one (mono, meaning one) molecule.
Starches are complex carbohydrates.
Complex carbohydrates are broken down into two categories: oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. Oligosaccharides have between 3 and 20 molecules, and polysaccharides have more than 20 molecules.
Then, we have fiber. We deduct fiber from the total carbs because, even though fiber is a carbohydrate, it can’t be broken down by our digestive systems.
Microbes can break down fiber, so fiber is great for supplying your gut microbes with nutrients.
Fiber does not affect your blood sugars like other carbohydrates.
Let’s talk about the glycemic index (GI). The GI tells you how fast a particular carbohydrate turns into blood glucose and affects your blood sugar level.
For example, a raw potato would be relatively low on the GI because the starch isn’t going to break down very quickly. However, cooked potatoes or a bag of potato chips would be much higher on the glycemic index because they are broken down much more quickly, thus causing a spike in blood sugar.
The goal is to consume foods that are low in sugars and carbs but higher in fiber to help keep your blood sugar levels normal.
Some vegetables are very starchy, which means it is high in carbohydrates. Potatoes, carrots, and beats all have higher amounts of carbs compared to leafy greens, asparagus, celery, and broccoli. You don’t have to count your carbs when it comes to non-starchy vegetables.

Thanks for watching. I hope this helped explain the difference between carbs and sugars. I’ll see you in the next video.
Looking at the back of product labels in the grocery store is scary.
It would be in America
Horrifying! If it has a label, I try not eating it! Because it’s not a whole food.
Its simple, you are able to buy just meat / veggies / eggs / cheese -> just real food 👍

Hey Doc, I have a quick question. So I take Metamucil and realized that on the ingredients list it shows as being a “No Sugar” product but has 10mg of Carbs. I am confused about this because I thought a part of what carbs is or contains is sugar. What are you thoughts about this?.
(P.s), I have learned so much from watching so many of your videos this month. Just ordered your Potassium Drink & a list of other vitamins which you mentioned. Which I should get tomorrow. Thank you so much sir for all that you do for us. 🙏
Thank you so much for this video. It was very beneficial. Keep up the Great Work! Much appreciated!
This guy makes me want to study medicine and be a doctor.
Good for you - go for it! We need more docs like him. I for one have the opposite reaction - it's all too complex and confusing to me so I just go for his summary statements and follow his advice, lol.
A great complement
Not really because doctors don't know any of this stuff... I wish they did.
Think not twice. .... but ten ..a hundred times before deciding to take this path.
hes not a doctor
Love Dr Berg’s approach to healthy eating through understanding the science of our bodies. After jumping on the intermittent fasting keto diet bandwagon, the 20lbs of weight I gained during the pandemic is slowly starting to come off. It’s difficult because the people around me are not aware of this science and they eat purely for pleasure, but I am encouraged when I see my health improving and sadly their health declining. All you can do is work on yourself.
Awesome 👏 keep it up! I've been doing low carb and IF since Sept and you're right; a lot of people just don't get it! But we'll have the last laugh you'll see. I've lost 5kg and maintain an ideal weight now even when I'm no longer so strict with my carb intake. I bake a lot so I still have my treats but I know just how much sugar I put into it which is so much less than shop bought. You'll benefit a lot on IF and low carb/keto lifestyle I can guarantee you. My mate went on weight watcher plan but her weight is keep yo yo-ing. IF and low carb or keto will not fail; make sure you exercise and sleep well though. You can do this 💪
Hello Dr Berg my English is not good but I watch your videos and very interesting my weight is 84kg and IAM 32years send me diet plan which is good for me IAM married and I have four children with sezior help me because I wish I lose my weight thanks
Same here when I first started doing IF and Keto. Everyone's telling me that I might get sick doing these kind of stuffs but they don't have an idea that I feel a lot healthier than eating carbs and sugary, processed stuffs..
It's great that you feel so empowered! Keep up the great work!
It’s so nice to hear a positive response! 😃

Dr.Berg deserves his statue made in gold!! These days medical industries conceal everything from public but he's changed that completely and saved lives of millions of people like me. I'm 35 years old expat living in Chennai southern India I've never been to America my entire life so i wish to visit america one day and meet this amazing doctor personally and touch his feet to show my respect for him. I was someone who knew nothing about intermittent fasting or insulin resistance at all so being unaware n habitually food craving I used to eat a lot of ice creams, sweets, cakes multiple times a day because of which I gained lot of weight about 96 kg at 5'8 and I struggled to shed it but one day I happened to see Dr Berg's intermittent fasting video that changed me completely with regards to my diet especially made me very cautious towards sugar, refined carbohydrates consumption ultimately i not just started following intermittent fasting with exercise but also cut down sugar completely because of which I'm in good shape at 80 kgs feeling gr8 most importantly helping myself fall a victim of diabetes
Well said & Gr8.😹☝️😂🎇
"...when you're reading labels..." ... I don't read most labels - I eyeball the number of ingredients, and if it looks more than 5 or so, I put it back... saves a lot of time ;)
And I avoid any ingredient with more than 3 syllables, lol
Same. Couldn’t be more healthier
I read the ingredients, and if it says "sugar" or anything artifical it goes right back.
@@TheRogueJedii yes and for those new to this channel, go find Dr.B's videos on the many different names for sugar, usually names ending in "ose" or "tol".

Dr Berg makes a video about avoiding processed sugar and the comments are like, but what if I eat a salad with my cake? 🤣
These short videos are very helpful because they concentrate on one thing and explain it fully. I've been very low carb for less than a year and this information is so important. Adding these small things together is a great help in seeing the broader picture. One of the things that truly hit home was from Drs. Michael and Mary Eades book The 30-Day Low Carb Diet Solution. They say that just one good sized potato is the metabolic equivalent of eating a quarter cup of sugar. This helps me explain to a dietician what goes on in my body when they try to explain what healthy eating is to me! Thanks for all this information. I do soak it up and can vouch that it contains zero carbs and does not cause a spike in my blood glucose numbers! This information puts me in charge and keeps me on a steady path to continued wellness.
Ist always nice to learn The little details about stuff like this when it comes to health and science. I've always wanted to know the exact difference myself.
Dr Berg is a great teacher 💖

WOW ~ I have so much to learn💗
I saw a documentary recently and the presenter held two skulls. One had perfect teeth and the other had rotten teeth, with many missing. We were asked to guess which skull was oldest. The skull with rotten teeth looked older so most people would assume that the one with perfect teeth was younger. It turned out that the skull with rotten teeth was only 200 years out, while the one with perfect teeth was more than 10,000 years old!
Simply put, sugar has only been with us for a few hundred years.
what is your point
So, the conclusion is that the guy that ate sugar lived longer, and since the guy that did not ate sugar had a shorter lifespan, we should eat more sugar to live longer. Only that we will die with rotten teeth. LOL 😂
Thank you Dr. Eric.
Sure! I'm happy to be of help.
