      He made it sound like *him* forgetting the rolling mechanic was somehow Mizz's fault. He programmed a Fireball spell in his own game and didn't have a single person figure it out. Meanwhile, every other person figured out how to Roll.
      Dude needs to learn the difference between ego and bad design. Complains about "Front-loaded with text", then doesn't bother to read basic controls. Comes off like a condescending douche, ngl.

      @@grapz2245 Nobody figured it out because it didn't make it into the game, guess I forgot to write that into the script. My apologies for the confusion.
      Nah, me forgetting about the roll mechanic was my fault. I'm just not a fan of introducing mechanics at the start of a game through text, because players tend to forget about them if they even bother to read it (many don't). Especially if you suffer from poor memory as I do. It was pretty basic criticism amongst friends, not sure why you're so upset about it.

      @@cityheron7106 He did critique a lot, but I would at least argue that it seemed genuinely constructive and gave good feedback with no rude comments. Considering that, I assume his game seemed slightly samey because he likes to take time with his code (evidence being his emphasis on his trigonometry based sword swinging and how his game had the largest character variety both with stats and with animations)
      Quick Edit: when I posted that I was pretty close to the end but hadn't seen that he added the sorcerer boss, so no it wasn't the largest character variety, but hey that doesn't change what I mean!

      @@aluas4654 I don't agree, to me the second guy came across as self-important and pretentious, up talked a lot of his extremely standard and basic stuff, and downplayed other peoples work in a short timespan. I had to actually skip most of his segment because I was getting bored of him going over every ling of code. Where other devs were fine with explaining thought process and concepts, it felt as if Game Endeavor felt the people watching wouldn't be smart enough to know how to do basic top down movement and went in detail about a handful of lines of code and spent far longer than any other dev talking up their own game and ideas. He talked up the trigonometry-based combat, but honestly nothing int hat combat was complicated at all, super basic trigonometry like that can be done in very few lines of code and is nothing to brag about.
      He may have had better telegraphing of attacks and animations, but other than that his game was the most bog-standard cookie cutter game of that genre of the lot of them, the others may have not have been as refined but they tried something interesting at least. He also offered basically no positive remarks about other peoples works and instead focused solely on ranting about attack telegraphing. His entire commentary was very one-note for me.

    Howdy, everyone. :) I'm seeing a lot of comments calling me out for how critical I was in the video, saying that I'm salty, etc. Quite the opposite in fact. These developers did a fantastic job on their games, and I'm thankful that they gave me the opportunity to participate in this jam.
    I am very critical when I play games, especially jam games. It's not meant to be taken as a negative thing. I wasn't bashing their games, in fact I thought they were amazing. Far better than my entry. I'm the type of person that values criticism over praise, that includes recieving criticism for my game. My aplogies for coming off as over-critical. It was never my intention.

Apparently I just made the mistake of reviewing the games as I typically do during a game jam rather than just Let's Playing the games. I'm not bothered by it.

      I agree that critique is something very powerful and helpful for any jammer and dev in general, but I think people complain about how your tone sounds as if you're bashing the game, when in reality it was quite the opposite. I did enjoy hearing how you could help them improve because you're watching it from a Player perspective (when testing their games) and that is something important. At the end, a game doesn't matter if players don't want to play it.
      People mistake honesty and being critical with rudeness when in fact you weren't rude at all.

    I can't be the only one that lowkii appreciated Game Endeavours critique, i think it is important to say what you believe would make a game mechanically more fun and such, and he did point out some of the things he enjoyed from the others' games. Greta video though, and i really hope to see more of these :)

      I appreciate it way more over the Let's Play-ish commentary some of the other people provided (not trying to say they all did bad, but I think Game Endeavour was the most constructive). I thought it was really interesting as well to see everyone's thoughts on it.

    Guys this is amazing!!! Thanks for using the art kit. Looks like you had fun working on those : ) I like it so much.
    The use of heightmap for more interesting walls; the use of little goblins and bouncing animations; the us of red fountains for replenishing health (which I believe was the idea at the start (inspired by the diablo) but I've never told anyone); and chopping the sprites to create more interesting designs (The main character uses knights' heads and I'm like "ok..., kinda creepy", but than I see the ogre boss, and he's using just ocrs as his armor XD).

    Seriously, guys. The purpose of a game jam is to make a prototype that can be improved later. Without the benefit of critiques, developers have to do all the play-testing by themselves. He's trying to help people.

      @@vapehut2326 I respectfully disagree on that front. Taking the intuition of newbie players into account is an important part of all game design. Consider, for example, how "Mega Man X" reinforces the wall-jump mechanic by forcing the player to utilize it in a safe environment after allowing some time to come to grips with basic movement and shooting. Or how the "Uncharted" games use color contrast and conservation of detail to visually guide players through the environment. These tiny considerations add up to help create a much better experience. Even some open world games--like "Breath of the Wild" do this.
      Furthermore, player feedback doesn't necessarily have to adhere to a standard of correctness to be useful, because the subjective experience of players is still data that can inform design choices. Note that I said "inform," not "instruct," because how the designer responds to feedback ultimately depends on his or her vision for the project.

      @@freya9107 That's true. Blanketly saying that the end goal of a game jam is to create a prototype may have been an oversimplification. It can also function as a way to get inspired or stretch your creative muscles. If you do end the jam with the start of a future masterpiece, that's great, but if you never develop the game further, it's still not time wasted. That said, listening to people's feedback is still a crucial part of the learning experience.

      @@user-hl7lr8ld2i Data Desk is just a utility that parses my own data description language. I can put a set of structs, constants, or declarations in a file, which Data Desk can then parse and generate an abstract syntax tree for. The powerful part about it is the fact that it allows custom, presumably project-specific code to be plugged in and be called back with information about what was parsed. This allows the user to introspect upon the data at compile time with their own custom code layer, which can allow for several possibilities, including: UI code generation to make a UI that modifies a structure's fields, generating printing functions, and other boilerplate code generation. A quick example is: You define a MapProperties struct, and in your Data Desk custom layer, you generate UI code, so in your game's editor, you can call the MapPropertiesUI function and have a function that generates UI to edit the map properties. This becomes particularly useful if you just add it as another build-step so that the generated code never becomes stale. The idea is to have the ability to change a structure, press compile, and have all of the correct code be generated (UI, printing, etc.). In Dungeoneer's case, my Data Desk custom layer did vertex data generation for the map _at compile time_, so the user's machine never actually has to do that work at runtime.
      This kind of just scratches the surface, so if you're interested in learning more, you can check out Data Desk's code at github.com/ryanfleury/data_desk

      I value criticism as a game developer, more so than praise. Criticism helps us grow and improve our craft. I prefer others to critique me just as I critique them. Me forgetting to place an invisible collision box doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to offer criticism that I think would improve their game. :)

    Really interesting. Favorite part was Miziziziz character creation.
    Since you could only use one sprite sheet, doesn't mean you couldn't draw a new sprite!! I'm like totally blown away.
    *Ryan's* 3d world had the foundations to be a beautiful world and a beautiful game. But the end product felt more like a super elite, best of the best, assassin sniper, doing a high stakes mission - took the shot after an excruciatingly long while of suspense and poof... missed. Failing the mission.
    *Game Endeavor's* game development skills - level designing, usage of assets, blending it all together, etc. was all pretty solid. like, SOLID. But the end product was just a bit too solid, it just stayed on the ground. Not much flair of creative juice or anything like that. Like some sort of x-factor that'll keep you interested in the game. And no, i'm not talking about the lack of game juice.
    *Pigdev's* - not much to say. The feel of his game is more or less like *Game Endeavors'.* More on the less part. Like, if there is a game dev class skill tree, both of them are using the same class. Only that *Pigdev* is halfway through that skill tree before he could reach *Game Endeavor's* current level.
    *Miziziziz* just blew everything out of the water here. This is the creative juice i was talking about. I'm an even bigger fan now! These are the times that make me proud that i clicked on the *subscribe* button way back when subscribers were just around 1K+.
    I mean, i love his video style and personality projection in front of the camera and especially, especially his blitz tutorials and all. But i didn't think the games he was showcasing was actually any good. (Sorry, but not sorry. xD)
    But OMG. This is the shit. Given the constraints on making this game - This. Is. The. Shit. *Game Endeavors'* points about the movement tutorial part are valid, but i think that's just something you put on game polish. Besides character creation, the level design was well thought out. There is enough variation and game elements that keeps the player interested. Not to mention, how *Miziziziz* must've racked his brain to give the player a feeling of closure after playing through the game.
    This video has motivated me to make my own mini dungeon crawler. I wanna put it up in 48 hours.

      Thanks for the kind words and the feedback! Creativity isn't really my strong suit, it's what I struggle with most in game development. As I make more and more games, I get a tiny bit better at it though. This was a good exercise for me, I learned a lot from seeing how the others used the assets in creative ways.
      As for character movement being polish, I have to disagree. I prefer to fine tune that early on because the rest of the game may rely heavily on that. The prototype needs to be fun to play while being as bare bones as possible, so I think character movement plays an inherently large part in the "fun factor".

    The only thing I was sad about is that the attack animation in Miziziziz's game was so quick and the sword is on his back the rest of the time, you never really get to see the blade. It's almost like attacking with a white spell other than a swing effect. Other than that, awesome work guys!! In a few months when I level up I'd like to join your jams :D

    If you get the environment and knockback effect of the 1st game, the AI and character of the 2nd game, the UI/fountain mechanics of the 3rd game, and level design of the last guy, this would be a really awesome collaboration.
    The 2nd guy and last guy combat system in collaboration would be great too.

    A nice tip I saw somewhere was instead of casting the inputs (is_action_pressed) to int you would just use the get_action_strength() method. Then you would not need to cast.

    I feel like that first game would work well as a binding of Isaac style 3D (ish) rogue like. Heck, if that was the case and the character art was done in the same cardboard cutout style as the legend of bumbo, I’d play the hell out of it lol
