    The new Hoka Tecton X 2 is a decent update, but at $225 is it worth the steep price tag? I liked the first version and I like this update, but there are some concerns. What are your thoughts?

      Aren't most hyper shoes in this category?
      Lots of (light) foam, with limited rubber outsoles. Lots of exposed foam midsole serving as outsole (foam in direct contact with the ground.)
      Some shoes can handle this. I think the foam saucony uses lasts well. (Endorphin 2-3)
      I have a lot of hokas, but I do think their midsoles lose cushion more quickly than others.
      🤔

    Loved the 1s - so light and awesome. Used for several ultras and felt great, esp running up hills. But they are super slippery in loose dirt and anything wet. Just not enough lugs or grip. Definitely found myself holding back a lot on downhills due to that. Will prob grab 2s once they go on sale and come down to a reasonable price.

    I won these shoes in a raffle on Global Running Day. Took them out for a few long runs in the San Gabriel Mountains including Wilson and I've been extremely impressed. Haven't tried Baldy, but I'm pretty sure they'll do just fine. I'm saving them for race days now until I get a second pair on sale. $225 is too rich my ass.

    FWIW: i have higher volume feet that are just on the edge of being a bit too wide for a D in most shoes (hoka speedgoat 5s in wide are amazing for me). i got the original tecton x on sale this past winter and went up half a size and they feel great. the litebase is incredible, and i actually like the lacing system because it lets that slightly narrower toe box stay a bit looser for my feet. have not had trouble dialing in the fit.

    Just raced these in a 12-hour most-miles mountain race on the Navajo Nation with 7,500’ total feet of vertical ascent and corresponding descent. Works in nearly all conditions except thick mud, which happened during a thunderstorm. Shoe absolutely doesn’t shed mud. Otherwise highly recommend.

    The Tecton felt a little on the large side at the first try and I initially did not like them. After a few months I tried them again and loved them. For me the ideal road to trail shoe. Not made for technical trails but you can run easier Ultras in them or also use them for urban trails.

    I love the max cushion of hokas and I’ve had several pair of speedgoats and they all go flat too fast just like you said. I start to feel rocks and roots after only about 200 miles. Just did a 12+ mile run in about mile nine the midsole just felt dead and really uncomfortable. For a shoe that is supposed to be in the ultra category, I am really concerned I wouldn’t be able to run longer than a marathon in them. Like the outsole a lot but the midsole doesn’t have anything on the exodus ultra. I do like to split carbon plate, but I’m still not convinced that plates at all should be in trail shoes.

    I have the TX2 paired with the Inov8 Boomerang insoles, and it really helped dial in the fit and a little extra bounce/cushion. The carbon does seem like a glorified rock plate, but does give a little pop. Not sure I’d drop $260CDN if given the choice again, lots of shoes below $200, including the discounted TX1, that would do about the same, if not better.

    • @tommilam6320
      @tommilam6320 Před 9 měsíci

      What I wish they would have done is just pull the carbon plate out or fork it and or use a less harsh material. (Or just leave it out and keep the shoe as is.) Rift looks kinda odd, not sure it’s any better than Xodus, especially if they didn’t switch up the outsole rubber compound. Wish all brands would just suck it up and use VB megagrip.

    The grip is not as good as the Speedgoat II's, III's, IV's, or V or Speedgoat Evo. I find the toe box a little problematic on the outer edges, gives blisters. But I do like the shoe. I also like the first version.

    • @RowOfMushyTiT
      @RowOfMushyTiT Před 9 měsíci +1

      Maybe just find the OG TX1. TX2 not worth the price. At least with the Ultrafly you get ZoomX and more impulse from the plate. Both these shoes ideally need easy runnable terrain so use case actually quite limited for a trail shoe. For me a trail shoe needs to be way more versatile.

  • @jitesar
    @jitesar Před 9 měsíci +1

    Exactly my complains: bad lockdown, laces bite, thin and short and wrapping tonque. Might be my personal issue, but every run I'm trying to re-lace it somehow but still not good feeling with these shoes. Bad luck. Otherwise, midsole, cushioning great. Comparing with SG Evo, where I can forget about shoes during a run, this is not the case with X2.

    • @bikeinmotion
      @bikeinmotion Před 9 měsíci

      I still don't get why they have discontunued the evo sg. Had much better lockdown as the sg5 and durability of the midsole was way better then sg5. My sg5 are dead after 350km - had the evo over 800km

    For basically the same money Hoka is really a bad deal.

      Agree, too many shoe reviwers ignore the ride and transition of the shoe. For instance i like a more natural riding flexible shoe with ground feel for trail running rather than a stiffer rocker based profile. Rocker really interferes with forefoot striking. Liking the Kiger 9s over the Zegama at the moment for this reason. The Salomon R-camber (salomon trail pro 2) is also a nicer/gentler rocker than the Zegama.
