    the green triangle is zongzi, a traditional Chinese rice dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves, usually eaten during Dragon Boat Festival. :)

      Dumpling is actually the wrong name. Dumpling is dough made with flour, for instance Jiaozi, or Wontons, or Xiaolongbao are dumplings. Zongzi is considered to be sticky rice, much like sushi rice or rice cake.

      But I do think Americans product is 100% safe. I hate conflicts and I really are surprised that you are respecting other cultures instead of blaming.

    The one folded at an angle are sticky rice, while the one folded flat are plain rice.
    And inside the rice are usually little bit of fatty meat like precook bacon, some beans, some red dye port and other ingredients.

    The “green triangles” at 3:20 are sweet rice with either sweet or savory fillings and wrapped in banana or lotus leaves and have been steamed. So they’re ready to eat after reheating (steamer or microwave) and they are awesome! There are many variants based on regions - different leaves, different fillings but they are the equal of comfort food. But Shanghai style is considered the best. Don’t leave Shanghai without trying them!

    Green Triangles are 粽子(zongzi, rice and meat or other ingredients wrap around by Reed leaves, most are pork flavours and Bean paste flavours),one of the traditional food to eat during 端午节 (Dragon Boat Festival), it is to memorise someone jump into river or something. Some of those are cooked and throw into rivers to let the fish eat them instead of his body or some story like that, now it is more of a tradition of families being together.

    I enjoy hanging around in the supermarket every time I go back to China, but many large supermarkets have closed down in recent years due to the boom of online shopping, young people these days tend to buy almost everything online (via Taobao or Tmall), for many years we used to have 2 big supermarkets near our home in Beijing but they both closed down for good last year:(

    14:40 Nah, the foreign brands are not of better quality per se. The difference between the pricing is due to the import tarrifs.

    • @lenny.winter
      @lenny.winter  Před 6 lety +3

      I know about import tariffs, but here I specifically mentioned Tide and Pampers, both P&G products. Didn't look too much into it now, but I know P&G has production plants in China, correct me if I'm wrong. Therefore, I'm pretty sure these products were made in China, just as the Chinese brands in the category, and are just more expensive because of the brands. btw I wasn't completely serious saying that the quality must be the reason for the price difference, I just threw it out there that obviously the foreign product is more expensive for different reasons (tariffs, stronger brands), but actually I have no idea how good would the Chinese brands be.

      This is pretty much the case especially in cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Grocery items cost almost as much as those in the US. Actually many of them of even more expensive than the U.S.. Cost of living in the first tier of cities is extremely unfordable for most of middle class people. I think the primary drive of the high cost is real estate prices. Today, a 100 square meters apartment in Shanghai may cost 1 to 1.5 million US dollars, depends on the location.
      If you go to a smaller city, things will be totally different. but in short, cost of living is roaring everywhere in China.

    The green triangles are called Zongzi 粽子, meat filled rice snacks wrapped in bamboo leaves which are steamed before eating. It's eaten during the Dianwu festival, also known as the Dragonboat festival, to commemorate an ancient government official and poet called Qu Yuan, who wrongfully got expelled from imperial court due to conspiracy by rival ministers and was sent back to his hometown. He committed suicide by drowning himself in the river, when he got news that his country has fallen into enemy hands. Qu Yuan is known to be a patriotic and well respected man. Villagers in an attempt to search for his body took wooden sticks and splashed them in the water to scare away the fish also they threw rice in the water in order to lure fish away of not eating his remains. Hence the tradition came to existence of eating Zongzi and Dragonboat races with the paddles symbolizing scaring away the fish.

    I was wondering why is Lenny taking forever to upload the next video? But after seeing the amount of time and effort that went into editing this interesting video...I now know why! :D Oh, and I think the gloves are for safe handling of those prickly durians. I'd love my hands to smell of durian, haha...
