    Nice mentality and attitude. I try to speak some basic local language whenever I visit some country. Its a form of respect. And usually the locals will start to speak english to you when they see you are struggling and they appreciate that you at least tried, its a guaranteed icebreaker!

    Love your big smile ~ As a Chinese, I'd like to speak English when I come across a foreigner on the street. It's the satisfaction or the confidence I get from managing making a conversation with them that make me happy, especially when I helped foreign tourists out. Maybe that's why you want to speak Chinese in China, too. Actually, I feel a little bit envious about Europeans because they can speak so many languages like English, French or German. Are you European?

    • @qjtvaddict
      @qjtvaddict Před 5 lety

      Jerry Hu the reason for this is that many European countries are landlocked together and on top of that are small in general so they have different languages right next door to each other

    Selling the same things on the same street is very normal in China, merchants gather together and form a phenomenon to attract people interested in those particular kind of things. There’s a saying called 货比三家, they compare all the stores, since the stores are gathered together it’s easier for them to pick the worthiest stuff :)

    It’s so hard to retain a language when you never use it. High school and college i was studying German and for a little while I had a private tutor for Russian. Every time i would try to speak Russian though in front of my Russian friends I would feel so embarrassed that I wasn’t saying it correctly. When I was in China I would try to learn a word a day because I can’t stand speaking English in a country that didn’t originally spoke it, but I was there was too many days lol. So btw when I would be at the bund I would always think about how it would of been so perfect if flying cars existed. That would of been so cool.

    I knew a few languages before going to China and have since learnt Chinese. I soon discovered just how commodified English was. People would thurst themselves in my face just to practice their English. English fever as they call it. So I soon tried to make friends outside of work in any language but English and there I found people were less interested in just practicing their language and more interested in developing a friendship. I'm generalizing, yes, but I still found it to be common enough for English to be way too commodified and soulless.
