  • Why use ribbon mics on guitar? Recording techniques for getting the most out of ribbons in the studio, why they're not ideal for some things, what else you need to know about them, and why I used the ShinyBox 46MXL Lundahl to record the acoustic guitars in my last video instead of an SDC.

Sounds great, trying to decide between these and the Cascade vin-jets. Any more details on the mono drum sound? Also great

The Vin Jets look good value, though I’ve not heard them. Mono drums: initially the self recording drummer made a mistake and only got one overhead recorded so I mixed the drums in mono. Then I realised for this type of instrumental track where the guitars are hard panned and there’s lots of LR info with no vocal down the middle, having drums central made sense and sounded quite nice!

Very helpful video! I recently bought an AEA N8 which is an active ribbon. I am going to check out the pre-amp you mentioned in an earlier comment. Still learning the best spot to place it. I like recording vocals and acoustic guitar together. Any suggestions on placement? Thanks!

It's a tough technique. I'd always go with two mics for guitar and voice where possible.

Very informative. Thank you. Recommend a preamp for ribbon or mics in general? I use a sm57 for eeeeverythang...

My pleasure my treasure. Yes. The DAV BG1 - two channels of handmade Decca-esque goodness - extremely clean and big and insane value for the price. If you want coloured though... different story.

@@JonWrightMusicTV lovely stuff. Thank you. These are really good jon. Watched this on my tv last night, the video image and sound 'oozes' quality.

@@cosmicnelly8902 That's great to hear! I'm shooting (mostly) and posting in 4k so it has the best chance of coming through the YT compression and looking decent. Appreciate the feedback, thank you mate

Wow, ALL ribbon mics are figure 8? Mid/side recording with ribbon mics is a thing? Can't wait to try that.
I have an SE VR-1 (I hope that's not the one you hate? I've always kind of liked it, but it's the first and only ribbon I've ever used ...)

YEP! Hours of fun. VR1 I've not heard (it's not the one I hated though).

    M160 is not figure-8 FYI
