Don’t DOUBLE-TRACK electric GUITARS… QUAD track them

- You've tried double tracking rock and metal guitars, but have you tried quad tracking? This is a fantastic way of recording huge, heavy guitars - so long as your playing is consistent and you know how to mix it.
I used a Kemper, but it works just the same with real amps. I'm using profiles from The Amp Factory: TAF Fan De'Lux Clean (plus the Kemper OC Drive) and TAF ManRock800.
The guitar is a stock Blade 'Players' Durango, which was £185 from ebay.

Hey Jon, great channel and great content. Can't wait to see your channel grow - you're doing some really cool work. Cheers!
Cheers! Glad you’re enjoying the vids 👍
I really like your relaxed approach, plus your clear and concise explanations!
I appreciate that!
Great video! Awesome song you put together there! I have been doing the same exact thing with quad tracking too; double tracking with one amp, and then double tracking again with a different amp to get four tracks all together AND a tone blend between the two amps.
Thanks! Cool isn’t it!
Couldn't have timed it better Jon! Was preparing to lay down guitars for a mighty heavy track today, and this was the perfect little nudge that I needed to really get into the mix a bit more. Have tried out a lot of what you've recommended and I'm delighted with how things are sounding. I was going for a very heavy, but very bright Dimebag-esque sound, and this quad tracking method has really filled out the mix. Used a Joe Meek VC3 to give the Marshall Valve a nice big commercial boost. Thanks for making my music better! Looking forward to more know-how...
Absolute pleasure to hear that Kai! I've heard your stuff so look forward to the latest output...
Awesome content here too. I am not a guitar player but I learn a lot. Please breakdown your video recording process. I don't see no MIC but the sound of your is just perfect. Please teach us how you achieve that.
Sound of my... voice? It does vary but it's usually a mic just out of shot, bit of EQ and compression
@@JonWrightMusicTV can you please tell me which one it was on this video?
I don’t remember!
Let's have a listen... no let's not let's move on. Haha good video man!
The pressure to keep thing succinct is intense (and I usually fail)
Love the clear and concise style of your videos. Your M/S recording vid brought me in. I really enjoyed that one and gave it a go myself over the weekend. Only issue was that my dining room is less than idea sounding and cranking ribbons likes to pick up bird calls haha. Subbed to see how you develop your channel. Best of luck! p.s. why are the tracks recorded in stereo? seems like a waste of HDD space...
Thanks very much. That M/S video is helping me out big time - glad you’re here. Re stereo - good question. I use SPDIF and occasionally record stereo from the Kemper, and it was also my live rig which was always stereo for IEMs - in a rushed setup I’d forget to switch back from Mono/DI (there no dual-mono option) to Left/Right so I just locked it at L/R. It’s a waste of space, but to be honest when you’re making videos in 4K, a few hours of 24/48 audio is a drop in the ocean in terms of storage. However you’ve got me thinking and there’s no good reason for it now.
Great video Jon! I’m getting the SansAmp Bass Driver in a couple of days. I think it will sound much better than the preset on my axe fx2 or the logic capabilities for the bass. Would be curious to have your opinion on this!
Ooh, good question... but you’ll be finding out the answer for yourself very soon! I don’t love the Logic bass stuff but have only heard good things about the Bass Driver so my guess is that you’ll be happy. I’m curious as to how it compares to the AFX
Great video! I've never really considered quad tracking, so much as I used to do a L/R/C - but in retrospect that obviously really hurt the stereo image. In your opinion are there genres that really benefit from this or others where it's less significant?
Glad you liked it! I quite like adding a centre guitar to an L-R pair in sections where there's no vocal or lead instrument. Doesn't sound as wide maybe but can fill the 'hole' where a vocal was (if that's desirable, it's not always). I don't have any fixed thoughts on genres - though the quad tracking I've done here works pretty well for anything with heavy guitars.
Inspiring!
Yes! I'm so glad if this inspires just one person!
Good one..
Thank you 🙂
Would like your thoughts on why you are recording in Stereo, as apposed to mono. Is the kemper using some room reverb?
Just a habit really, in this example there's no benefit to it. I have the Kemper permanently connected via SPDIF and probably about 40% of the time I might want stereo, so I've just got used to recording in stereo. With no stereo effects there's no issue with panning - it's just a waste of disk space.
No! Octa track them!
Next up: "32 tracked guitars or die!"
QuaD TRACKING IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET TO 11.
Always the goal!
