  • Cycle World takes BMW’s Berlin-built cruiser for a ride. Its massive size and nostalgic character compel you to slow down and enjoy the riding experience.
1,802 cubic centimeters or 110 cubic inches-no matter how you measure it, that is a substantial displacement for a horizontally opposed boxer twin. Two 107.1mm bores firing left and right dominate the first few moments of your experience on BMW’s Berlin-built R 18 cruiser. It fires to life, jumping to the left before settling into a lumpy idle, rocking the bike side to side. Ca-chug, ca-chug, ca-chug. That 225-pound chrome and aluminum living monolith breathing below and in front of you is just one piece of a riding experience that is very much unlike any modern BMW yet somehow is so compelling because it is a BMW. It’s raw, bordering on unrefined at times, while simultaneously being sublime in its nostalgic elemental riding experience.
The R 18 is BMW’s second attempt at entering the cruiser market (BMW might prefer we forget the R 1200 C) and it’s been teased for 18 months with a series of customs from builders around the world. And now the production version is here. It is truly a thing of beauty. Not often does a production bike outshine concepts and sketches; yet from nearly every single angle, this is what the black-and-chrome First Edition R 18 does. From the long and perfectly proportioned black-with-white-pinstriped fuel tank to the massive engine adorned with an equally massive 1,800cc badge to the shining exposed driveshaft, never have I experienced a motorcycle that the form is such an integral part of riding function.
Clean lines and graceful curves lead your eyes through the entire motorcycle’s shape and architecture. Nearly every detail is worth a long look. The double-cradle frame’s backbone matches the swingarm triangle, emulating a hardtail. Cables and wires are tucked away neatly. The engine’s shape is uncluttered-throttle bodies, starter motor, sensors, and ignition wires (and spark plugs!) are all hidden away from the world. There is bright and smooth chrome on the fishtail pipes and cylinder head covers, but not so much to remove focus from the classically black shape of the R 18. And it’s deep, glossy black with just the slightest hint of orange peel.
To be successful as a cruiser, BMW knew the R 18 must be designed with ease of customization-not only with BMW’s own parts already available, but those currently available in the aftermarket. Therefore, many of the most commonly changed parts like handlebar risers, foot controls, and gas cap are interchangeable with American cruisers. This strategic decision immediately opens up the marketplace for buyers looking to change up the look of their German cruiser; no waiting for designing, testing, and manufacturing. BMW even showed us pictures of an R 18 with apehangers, and it wasn’t wrong…
Without the clues and callbacks of the 1936 R 5, you have a big-displacement cruiser that is, to be blunt, very American in its ride quality and performance. But wrap this hammer in the velvet that is the R 5 mythos and design, and it becomes something special. Even before the ride begins. But it must be ridden, otherwise what would we do with our time here at Cycle World?
The largest boxer twin ever designed and manufactured by BMW, the R 18′s engine is 21.5 inches tall and 24.75 inches long. Watermelon-sized air-and-oil-cooled cylinders and four-valve heads punch out to the sides proud. In viewing the bike from the front, BMW’s propeller logo has never been so apropos. A duo of chromed tubes nestle within the black cooling fins of each cylinder, providing the path for aluminum pushrods actuated by dual camshafts working rockers to open the aforementioned pairs of 42.2mm intake and 35mm exhaust valves.
Three main bearings support the longitudinally mounted crankshaft-one between the 180-degree rod journals. This increases the offset between the cylinders-the left forward of the right-and imparts the classic “rocking couple” vibration exhibited by non-counterbalanced boxers of yore. Only it’s greater due to the wider separation of the connecting rods by that center bearing. Add to this the strong flywheel effect that amplifies the R 18′s left-to-right shake at idle-and it’s pure cruiser. And like old-time boxers, there is no balance shaft in this engine-BMW’s engineers wanted you to feel that flywheel effect and a strong engine pulse. They got it, now you have it.

I took one of these out for a 4 hour test ride and this is my thoughts. The bike as you say looks cool, to my taste perhaps just a little too much chrome however everyone’s different. The seat is hard, and really not comfortable and the pillion pad is even firmer. However there are a few seat options if you don’t like it. The bikes super clean looking, everything has its place and everything’s tucked away and out of view, most bikes I have seen have the horn mounted somewhere on the front of the bike but this is tucked away underneath the cylinder head so you don’t notice it, little things like that set it off. Engine wise it doesn’t egg you on to go super fast, it’s very smooth and absolutely lovely at “cruising” speeds. When you want to go nuts it vibrates and it vibrates hard. However to me it makes it feel like a machine, it’s not a modern bike in its feeing, it’s mechanical and visceral. Once up to speed or when you have over taken everything settles down again so it gives me the right mix of vibes and smoothness. You said your calves hit the air intakes, I see loads of reviews of Harley’s where the riders knee hits the air cleaner so I don’t really see it as an issue and everything your body comes into contact with is smooth with no horrible corners. As for your feet touching the underneath of the cylinders I do believe the levers are adjustable to give you more or less room. Most reviews I have seen I have heard continuously about lack of ground clearance, I scraped pegs once on a very very tight turn with a pillion on the back. It’s comparable to my Speedmaster 1200 but the rear shock must be set up for your weight. I took the thing down my favourite road and gave it a good thrash and it absolutely loved it, I’m doubtful I was much slower than on my Z900rs or that’s how it felt to me anyway. It feels planted and much much lighter to turn than I expected. On the weight front I was really concerned about it having never ridden anything this big and to be honest I didn’t really notice. I took the bike back after 4 hours and I really really wanted one. I jumped on my Z900rs to ride home expecting it to feel light as a feather and under powered but credit to Kawasaki it didn’t feel underpowered at all however it also didn’t “feel” much lighter off the side stand etc etc than the R18, not to me at least but the Kawasaki seat is much highest. I test rode a R-Ninet once having ridden to the dealer on a ER-6F (Z650 in America I think they are called) and the ER6 felt way underpowered and absolutely felt half the bike. So I’m now in talks with the dealer on a used R18. The seating position wasn’t wildly different than my Z900rs, but the suspension on the R18 is firm. I suspect that’s why it feels planted and sporty if you push it but if you hit a big bump then boy it’s not great. I think if you like the look of it, test ride one, and then look at getting the suspension upgraded and upgraded for your weight and riding style and the bike would be almost perfect, perfect for what I want anyway. If you want to go touring or long distance then one of the other R18’s with the touring packs and seats etc would be the ticket. Great bike, looks fab, makes you feel special and when you look down the engine just makes you smile. Let’s face it, most guys are just big children and this bike pushed all those childish buttons in a big, cool looking, well built package. Can’t wait to get mine!

This is a man’s bike. If you have decent strength, and are of average height and build, it’s not hard to muscle it around. The weight, because it’s slung so low, really goes away when you are moving. It is not designed to run at really high speeds. It’s designed to just enjoy the ride and look good doing it. Passing is effortless. The engine is very understressed and will last forever as long as proper maintenance at it’s prescribed intervals is performed. I own one. I love it. Some people are going to do some crazy things with it. Twin turbocharging and other crazy mods. I won’t touch mine. But it’s going to be fun to see what other people do with theirs. Someone has already built a dragster centered around that engine. There is a classic model available but there is a difference between a cruiser and a tourer. I love some people whining about no forward foot controls. But, this bike was built for relatively short hops. It’s not designed to compete with the Goldwings or full up Harley dressers. The bike has some character. Good job BMW.

It's a bike made to be gorgeous, but, It's well done too. The R 18 has a purpose. This is not a R NineT cruiser. I like that. It's to enjoy the engine vibration, the sound and to see each detail when you stop after 60 miles.

Beautiful motorcycle. BMW managed to create an original and at the same time classic design. FYI, the presenters are 5’10” and 6’4”. For the future, please try to position the discussed motorcycle in front of the presenters. Viewers do not really have to see their shoes but when talking about design it helps to see the whole motorcycle.

As an ex BMW R1100S owner I love it. But as a current Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400 owner I know my Guzzi is a better motorcycle more power more revs less weight(Audace is 300kg wet weight) I tried a HD Fat Bob 114 and my Guzzi accelerate better turns better and brakes better then the HD. I recon this is more of a Softail Slim od Deluxe competitor then the Low Rider S or a Fat Bob. I'm happy that BMW build it and I hope it will sell well!! Definitely better then the old R1200C!! It's a Lovly looking bike!! And if you Guys gonna do a group test make sure you take the Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400 / Eldorado!

To anyone who really likes the styling of this bike AND understands the intended purpose of a “cruiser” motorcycle do yourself a favor and go ride one. Don’t let someone else’s opinion based on their riding preferences sway you from at least giving it a shot. Just make sure the tires are aired properly and the rear suspension has been adequately adjusted. It really does make a serious and very noticeable difference. I love to ride and I love all things two wheeled. I would have NEVER paid MSRP for this bike. Too many other exceptional options available for $20k or much less.

I rode my 2017 Softail Deluxe TC to a demo ride of the R18. Did about 35 - 40 miles on the R18 and was left some what disappointed. I felt the marketing dept had more say in this bike than the designers. I was relieved to get back on my Deluxe and ride home. For me, this bike is "work in progress". I hope BMW will address some of the issues like limited suspension travel, very firm ride, too many vibrations though the seat, pegs and bars approaching 4000rpm, improve the front brakes so it brakes like my Deluxe, and add a fuel gauge and a range setting on the trip computer like on their other models. Cruise control would be good also.

You have limited lean capability, maby a different exhaust with a tiny bit of uplift after the peg will help......needs a heel-toe shift because its hard to get the boot under the shifter due to space.....gets lots of looks and has been well recieved for this. Its a "lets take this out today" kinda bike. HD baggers are way more comfortable on long rides no doubt.......this is a collection bike or a bike in your garage "quiver" ......all n all fun once n a while but you better have other options in your garage for other ocaasions.......i dont regret getting it though.

To be honest with you, I was expecting much more from BMW from the R18. (1) more technological features as they have in their other models (2) Lighter and more maneuverable bike. This bike is almost twice as heavy as the 1940's models and about one foot longer. (3) The ergos are awkward with the cylinders sticking out so much. Would actually be happier buying a modern reproduced replica of the 1940's model with a smaller engine rather than trying to ride a behemoth bike on steroids.

The best review. However, while you mentioned that it's a nod to the past in design and function, you didn't mention how expensive the bike is. For $21,000.00 plus taxes and related costs it is unacceptable that the bike can't take a turn without sparks flying, or that there is no fuel gauge, or that the foot/ leg position is a major problem. I have the desire for this bike (as I would customize it to my taste) and I have the money, but if I can't ride it without fuel anxiety or without suffering with ergonomics & poor seat then I pass.

Take a ride on the R18, and you will find that the low center of gravity makes it feel much lighter. I love Honda reliability. I went to test ride a VTX, and I was humbled when I could barely get it off the kickstand. so I purchaed a 2015 Valkyrie, which I loved, but I got tired of it over time. I wanted a bike with more character, so I purchased an R18 100-year anniversary edition, and it checks all of the right boxes for me. It's hard to compare it to any other motorcycle as it it's in a class all of its own. I never listen to the haters. I roll to the beat of my own drum. That's why I purchased the Valkarie. Nobody bought them, and Honda let them go brand new for $9,999 a few years after introduction. If you're looking for unparalleled reliability, silky smooth engine, 3rd only to Diavel and Vmax in HP, TQ and 0-60, incredible
handling, low center of gravity, then you should check out a 2014-2015 Valkyrie. You can pick up a good used one for ~7k.

It’s a great looking bike except for those horrendous, flower pot mufflers with the absolutely terrible stamping seams. This bike should have gotten a V-twin. The flat twin is a gimmick. Because of this layout, the engine required a massive crankcase and that no doubt is a big reason for the insane weight of this bike. It’s BMW’s version of a Softail, but its weight is closer to a Street Glide bagger. That’s crazy. Now back to the engine. It’s already getting overly buzzy at 3,000 RPM! It’s a large engine, but nowhere near the largest so the vibrations and low red line are inexcusable. The fact that your foot hits the cylinder while braking or the fact that it can get caught between the floorboard and the cylinder while cornering fringes on being dangerous. Being that this bike was certainly designed for the US market, cruiser heads would have been more accepting of a V twin cruiser attempt rather than this thing. I don’t see many of these selling. And there are few other markets in the world that will want this bike. For all of these reasons, I see the bike being killed in about 2 years. If you happen to buy one, you just may end up with a rare motorcycle in your garage.

Second, all that stuff about rpms and vibrations and feet getting stuck, weight, suspension, etc. That's not "character". That's just poor engineering and design. I mean there's a reason why the modern bikes have gone in the exact opposite direction of bikes like these: Because they're kind of dumb. Yet another overpriced, overweight, pointless, and "let's see how far we can push it and still sell it to our fanboys" kind of exercise from BMW.
