AIR! ALL about AIR and how we get it TO FLOW into ENGINES
We're taking a flyer on this one but we couldn't resist talking about AIR! True to form, Technical Editor Kevin Cameron starts talking about us breathing and how gravity holds air on the earth ("Which is really good for us.") and we take it from there. Poppet valves, pressure waves, exhaust and intake tuning, and so much more. Ever heard of an Aspin valve? Rotary valve? Sleeve valve? You can say yes to all those if you just have a listen to this week's Cycle World podcast. Join us in the air!

Can We Rally Race A Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Adventure Bike?
zhlédnutí 47KPřed 12 hodinami
Is it possible to race a modern adventure bike in a desert rally race? That’s the question we asked after watching Paris-Dakar videos from the early ‘90s. So we decided to create a modern version of Suzuki's legendary DR Big Paris-Dakar racer. We spent months building a 2023 V-Strom 800DE for the 2024 NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally, and now it’s time to go racing! Will we make it to the finish? Ride ...

Imho what killed triumph was vibration. You have to experience it to believe how bad it was. The sohc 750/4 was crazy smooth for not having balancers. The triumph was kick start but in power, build quality, and handling was as good as honda. BMW survived with an aircooled twin. The boxer configuration cancelled vibration. True, they had support of bmw car division.

Chain. Any 'tradeoffs' revolve around the maintaining and attention required which only whiners have problems with. Belt is a squishy rubber band that does soften shock in the gearbox but absorbs HP energy in the process. Shaft would be great if not for the horrible jacking effect it has on suspension when under load transitions. And the weight. And the inflexible gearing. Belt is acceptable for E bikes. Obviously I have strong opinions on the topic. Try to remember that anything that ever comes out of anyone's mouth (or is typed into YT comments) is only just opinion. Try not to be like the last douche who just wanted to argue without any new ideas or logic. Thought he was smart though. He got deleted.

Because it's going so fast that the valves aren't open long enough to get the air in. The inertia he mentioned is too high and by the time the air gets up to the velocity the valves are starting to close.

Professional Racer or professional Athletes are all a different breed of animal that us civilians will never understand. It's not just a switch they push and turn it on. It's burned into their souls, it came with the body and brain. Practice training lifes lessons only sharpen a rare skill set. All the new computer assisted controls on current race bikes make for faster lap times but less talented racers.

Roots style blowers don't turn for free. They are a parasitic drag so the idea was to instead have a free source of forced induction with the pressurized tank. Fair enough of a idea but I am sure the NHRA just saw it for what it was, a bomb.

Just to clarify a typical point of confusion: Boost modifies air density, not velocity. VE is a process of how well the engine can move air into the cylinder. While boost can increase the density of said air, the engine's ability to move that air is a function of (primarily) the cylinder heads moving air quickly into the cylinder (velocity). That's part of the reason why we've seen smaller ports make better power across the rev range time and time again. It is also the reason why a given size port (sized correctly for rpm range and displacement) will be the right size for an engine at 1 bar absolute (atmospheric) and at 5 bar. Also, Kevin had me in tears at 25:17. As many others have said, his talent lies in his ability to explain complex subjects in a digestible manner.

The different series are all great. And their rules work. You want streetbike based? Watch world superbike. You want unlimited F1 stryle tech? Moto Gp baby! With its aero, ride height goodies, launch control, etc. Thats how Martin drags his entire shoulder. Only the tech makes it possible. Moto2 and moto3 feed this series obviously. I only lament the loss of 2 strokes.....I roadrace a 114hp rz350 yamaha in American Vintage roadracing. Evil incarnate. But so satisfying when its right...and it wheelies in 4 gears to 140 mph.

I read an article that said the EPA said the camshaft gear teeth were too noisy on evolution big twin engine ..that is impossible..if you can hear gear teeth making any type of noise they are grinding together in a wipping effect that will wipe out the teeth in no time of maybe a weeks useage as the gear teeth will super heat when they are misaligned..gears have to roll off their center crowns and reengage the same way so the engagement does not slide together between the camshaft gear teeth and the crankshaft gear teeth. They will roll off of each other making no audible sound at all....there is a lot of evo engines with over 100,000 miles on the engines..this fact says the EPA is lying saying the evo cam gears made too much noise ..now days there are aftermarket engine builders like Ultima who build evo style engines that are very large displacement ..put one of these engines in an FX setup with dialed in Ohlins suspention front and rear and give it an unbiased cycle world complete test !

Kevin Cameron's tech knowledge has always been awesome. I've read Kevin's writing since the 1980s and apart from the knowledge he has acquired through his hands-on work and inhabiting the same space as other top tuners, what is special is his ability to communicate that sometimes arcane knowledge in an incredibly accessible way, to those of us who risk desiccation by trying to read dry texts or a brain hemorrhage trying to decipher mathematical expressions. What is becoming more apparent as this wonderful pod-cast series develops is Kevin's sense of humor and personality. This really is icing on the cake. The disembodied voice inside my head when I read his words back as much younger man, are now being fleshed out into less imagined and more human form. The internet for all it's foibles, sometimes actually enhances life, and broadening the communication band-width of a great communicator is a life enhancement.
