Can We Rally Race A Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Adventure Bike?
Is it possible to race a modern adventure bike in a desert rally race? That’s the question we asked after watching Paris-Dakar videos from the early ‘90s. So we decided to create a modern version of Suzuki's legendary DR Big Paris-Dakar racer. We spent months building a 2023 V-Strom 800DE for the 2024 NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally, and now it’s time to go racing! Will we make it to the finish?
Ride along with Cycle World as we race 1350 miles through Baja, Mexico.

It's a great book, my sister gave me a signed copy for Christmas. It's especially meaningful to me because I bought one of those first '83 VF750F Interceptors. I went to the Boston motorcycle show, took a good look at it, went home and put a deposit down. Then signed up for the Kieth Code California superbike school. I was riding an '81 RD350LC that I'd brought down from Canada. The RD had great handling too but the VF had so much more top end. One of my friends still has the VF.

This is PEAK CZcams right here! Absolutely loved it, and I wish this was what commercial TV was like for the last 50 years, instead of the packaged bites that really are nothing more than a tease. I've been watching your progress with the DR since it came up in my feed, (being a moto freak), and when I saw this come up last night, I got pretty excited. Unfortunately I fell asleep half way through. All day at work I was like, "come on hours, lets go, I got something to watch... Lol. THANK YOU TEAM CYCLE WORLD. 🚲😹🤠✌👍💪🙏👀 Edit - a post below reminded that this does actually remind me of those mini movies you'd get in the cinemas before a movie in the 1980's. Very immersive and personal. Probably just converted a whole new generation to wanting an Adventure bike. I'm personally second guessing my sports tourer purchase now. He he heeee... might have to get a second bike?

Don’t have a lot to add, other than the test ride I took left me really impressed with the engine and I hope it makes it’s way into a dual purpose and light adventure bike sooner than later. The 698 Hyper left me really impressed as a whole but the engine was a standout in how broad the spread of power was and the throttling. Yes, there were times when fuelling was a little fluffy at low RPM but in it’s element the motor was a gem.

Gents, my question is about setting tire pressures for street riding. For the purpose of my query let's use the owners manual figures of 36 front / 42 rear. Scenario: the bike is inside the garage overnight, where the ambient temp is 55 degF. The bulk of today's riding will be in 100 degF temps. Shall I set the 36/42 in the cool of the garage, without regard for the hotter temps that will be encountered during the ride? What would the protocol be if the situation is reversed? The bike is stored inside a very hot shed (95 degF) and the riding will be along the chilly Hwy 1 (60 degF). Again, shall I set 36/42 in that hot garage?

  • @BobJohnsonSince1970

First time tuning in to this podcast. I really enjoyed it. I've always enjoyed Kevin's columns in the Mag. My dream bike is a new Goldwing someday. Got to ride a 2015 model and then later a 2018 with the new front end at the Progressive Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, CA, both times with my wife as a passenger. Those rides cemented the bike for me as something I wanted to own. Until then, though, my 1974 CB750, & 2017 CB1100 EX will have to do. My wife, in 2010, decided after 100 miles on the back of my 750, that she wanted her own bike. I said, "Get your license and we'll get you a bike." within a month, she had taken the MSC, got her license, and then showed me a pic of the bike she wanted to get. I was staring slack jawed at a white Honda Dream 305. We found a black one (early 1964 model) that needed some work, but ran. I rebuilt the motor and did a frame-off restoration, had Jay Lossa's shop in Signal Hill repaint it white and re-foam and re-cover the seat in leather. It's a beauty, but doesn't lend itself to freeway riding, so she ended up adding a 2017 Triumph Bonneville T100 to our stable. But still, she says she wouldn't mind riding passenger anywhere, as long as it's on a Goldwing. Cheers!

Maybe the clutch issue has something to do with the type of oil as some oils cause clutch slip. I know this exists particularly with classic bikes synthetic oil worth a shot in testing to potentially eliminate this possible problem. Or it could be something as simple as the adjusters on the clutch being slightly to tight not allowing the clutch to fully in gauge course depending the type of clutch hydraulic< sticky slave cylinder maybe or the good old tried and tested cable clutch👍 safe to I’m not a fan of hydraulic clutch complete lack of feel particularly biting point it’s pretty much either on or off. The Yamaha T7 world raid has both the good old tried and tested cable clutch and cable throttle👍 If it ain’t broke don’t make it worse 👍
