  • Penalty kicks are said to be the cruelest way to decide a match...
    However on November 21, 2020 - the word ‘cruelty’ doesn’t begin to describe the drama of a shootout between Orlando City SC and New York City FC. Discover the stories behind one of the most infamous playoff matches in MLS History, that included a perfect storm of rule technicalities, combined with the pressure of a knock-out playoff match, and the twists and turns of a sudden death shootout.
    The drama of this match also extends to hotly debated topics across the world, including the use of VAR and goalkeeper positioning on penalty kicks, two items that are continuously evolving over time.
    Ultimately this type of pressure and drama are what makes the game so entertaining for those watching and yet so difficult to navigate for the players, coaches, and referees involved. Could you handle the pressure?

      From some research I did (not much) it seems as though people and the league felt like too many fouls were let go and some other mistakes were made throughout the game by the refs. It’s not about the line call it’s about the overall reffing. Also they were allowed to sub the goalie because they still had a sub slot left(the refs messed up that call). I don’t blame the refs just wanted to add some context

    • @heidimark
      @heidimark Před 2 lety +8

      @@Devotion10 ah, I don't remember much about the rest of the game. As for the goalie, they ended up getting that right as any player taking over for a goalie must be on the pitch for the shootout, which Rowe was not. That's why he ultimately came off and Schlegel took over. The number of subs remaining didn't play into it per the rules at the time.

      @GabrielHernandez84 Před 2 lety +2

    • @KCMaynes
      @KCMaynes Před rokem +8

      @@LafayetTheAwesomeOne the only thing he ACTUALLY messed up was the three whistle blasts one penalty early. He ALMOST messed up allowing the new goalie to substitute during the kicks from the mark, but since there's no provision in the laws for substitutions during that phase of the game, and he didn't restart play with the new keeper in goal, technically there wasn't a substitution and no laws were violated. He absolutely failed to project the confidence and authority a referee needs to in that situation, and was directly responsible for a hell of a lot of confusion, but up until he signaled the match was over one penalty early he didn't actually violate any laws of the game.

    2 big things they glanced over:
    • The ref initially allowed Rowe, the backup substitute GK for Orlando, to come on and get in goal to face the next penalty. He was then told to get off the pitch as they could not make a sub. The ref then again allowed him briefly to return on the field, only for him to finally say that Orlando were definitely not allowed to make a sub, and a field player who was already on the field would have to take the gloves and play GK
    • The only reason Orlando celebrated after the Schlegel save was because the ref had blown the whistle, indicating the game was over and they had won! It was not a mistaken celebration from Orlando thinking the game was over, it was a mistaken final whistle from the ref who thought the game was over.
    Really wished they explained that better in this video, because that is what truly happened. I watched the whole thing happen live at the stadium

    Chapman was 100% correct according to the laws with the keeper off the line and the red card. He clearly didn't want to do that, but he didn't have a choice.
    I wish he'd have explained his thought process around allowing the keeper replacement. That's pretty basic to know it's not allowed in this situation. My guess is that there was some sort of confusion because of the additional subs/windows allowed due to Covid.
    As for the celebration, that really was just a brain fart. Quite frankly, given everything up to then losing count seems likely especially with a different keeper in the net which may have thrown his mental count off, but he looked at his book and then blew it. I'm guessing he messed up back when the keeper was off the line. That would have been a miss for NY which then turned into a make. Not acceptable, but likely what happened.

    if you get an yellow card during the normal time, it does not add to a red card if getting another one in the penalty shootout.

    That was probably one of the WORST referee calls I’ve ever seen. That sideline ref needs to be booted from the MLS immediately

    • @choduffield
      @choduffield Před 2 lety +3

      Arguing the correct call of the keeper being off the line is pointless. He was off the line. There was a big emphasis on this (still is). There is a line to make it very clear. Complain about the rule but not how it was correctly applied.

    • @joseaste259

      The MLS needs to do a better job of “letting the players play”. They’re currently taking a very black or white approach to many rules.
      Which brings me to my next point, A referee will ALWAYS have discretion on making a call or not if he believes said action affected the outcome. That’s why the first thing that was asked to the ref was “what was the on field call?” before even going to VAR.
      In this case the goalie made an amazing play which is coming off the books because of a technicality, in no way did those .5 inches that Gallese was off the line were the reason why he stopped that PK. He made an amazing play that should’ve sealed the deal.
      Just my opinion, love the debate on the comment section

      @@joseaste259 This has been hashed out already. What is acceptable? 1 inch? 4 inches? There is a line drawn on the pitch. This is an international standard and enforced the same elsewhere. It's not an MLS black and white interpretation.
      That said, MLS has certainly been known to tie the referees' hands with their points of emphasis. The biggest example is the hands to the face automatic red from 5ish years back. That became a joke on how strict it was. The referees, wanting to keep their jobs and get assigned more games, gave reds which they absolutely knew were not in the spirit of the law.
      I don't believe the keeper being off the line is one of those. I don't want a judgment of how much being off the line mattered in the save. The keeper will always push the line. It's like not calling a sprinter for a false start because it was so close.

      Not true, I think he is one of the best, I mean that bar is pretty low but still, even if his calls are wrong, he always gives his explanation and reasoning behind every single call. And he keeps the game flowing, exactly what the ref should do

    As a European I can only smile about the hype in all the comments. We in the old world have problems with the rules of your football, but you in the new world have problems with our football. Every referee on a professional level in Europe would have done better than this one, and every spectator in Europe would have understood immediately what was happening and what went wrong (IF it happened, the referee wouldn't have let it happen).
