    When was the protocol created/enacted for dealing with abuse that the referees don't hear? I know I had to deal with that a couple times back in my referee days; and although me and my crews handled it much as you described it, actually having a protocol would have make it a lot easier to work with the coaches and players - whenever something like that happens emotions go through the roof, but it might have helped, even a small amount. I'll put my old man stick away now.

      @WesleyHoy Před rokem

      As a referee, and one who started at 13 years, I've seen a lot of abuse in my days. There's a good NYT article about how many young referees along with vets are leaving the job in droves, and it shows. Assignors are always begging, and if you say yes, you're going to be doing games all day. This past recertification there was a large emphasis on referee and player abuse, so I hope this issue starts to get treated more seriously.

      My assessor gave me high grades. The assignors said I wouldn't go far calling all this stuff. Let them play.
      Amazingly, my games were controlled and the temperature of the game held.
      I see other games of loose rules and the games go bonkers. The refs are the ones they promoted that let them play. Lack of control, behavior, heat, etc.
      A lot of young refs quit. I would AR for them and in the end, they just give up with parents and coaches. I tossed enough of the problem children. Leagues don't want it.

    As a DC United fan, it's obviously frustrating to have two controversial calls go against them, but your rationale in both cases is reasonable. I was sort of surprised that nothing was made of the Columbus keeper going for a punch, completely missing and absolutely clattering into a United player. Is this just a special privilege for keepers? I always thought the standard was the keeper needed to make contact with the ball before they can legally go through a player.

      I'm a Columbus fan and agree about that foul from our keeper. When I was watching, I figured he would have been called over to take a look at that. He took your player completely out and didn't get the ball. But the other two goals I believe were correct. Matan did dive, but the contact before was a foul. I don't know if there was sexism involved (which has zero place in the game), but I'd prefer to look at it in light of a somewhat similar call last week. In that call, the handball was initially waved off, but VAR showed the referee (coincidentally? also T. Penso) an angle that looked like arm extension and the PK was given. PRO later came out and said that was the wrong call, as the arm was extended behind the player within their frame. You could be right, but I'd like to think this was a case of referees and VARs trying to calibrate their handball decisions before I jump to patronizing. Penso is an excellent referee in a challenging position.

No clue why the VAR official called her over to look at it but she was right on the pitch and she was right after reviewing it. They kept showing the play on the huge screen while she was reviewing it which surprised me but they showed a couple angles and it was so clear and obvious that she made the right call that to flag it was a joke. However, I seriously doubt sexism has anything to do with it. This isn't her first game, or even her first season.
