      The conferences is mostly just an American sports culture thing. It's how the other major sports leagues in this country setup. Because of how geographically large the US is and how many cities/teams we have, it helps to separate them into conferences for organizational purposes.
      All teams play each other through the season like any other league. But your only competing directly for points against teams in your conference. At the end of the season, the top 8 from each conference qualify for the play offs and compete for the big trophy(MLS Cup). As a side note, there is a Supporters Shield for the team that finishes with most points in the league. But that trophy is considered secondary/consolation to the MLS Cup.

      The argument is that the ball was at his feet UNTIL the tackle occurred. The only reason it didn't remain there was because of the tackle. So if you deem the tackle to be a foul, then that occurred while he had possession at his feet. It only got away from him because of the tackle.

    In the Orlando v Houston game you can clearly see the right leg of the defender make contact with the right leg of the attacker. From the angle in this video it looks like the attacker went down really easy. That being said, as we all know, VAR needs to have cold hard evidence that it was not a foul. When I see that contact, my mind says "there's no foul there, he went down easy." But as a VAR, put yourself in their shoes. They are disciplined for recommending any review that, in PRO's opinion, is not clear and obvious. So it makes sense that the VAR in this game sees the clear contact between the players legs and says "I don't think there's a foul here, but there was contact that could be construed as tripping, so I can't recommend a review here."
    In the end, based on the angles here, it should not have been a penalty. But anyone who blames the VAR for this doesn't understand the process. Every review that a VAR incorrectly recommends lowers the score they receive for their assessment and puts their job at risk. Seeing the contact, no wonder he refrained from recommending a review.

    • @MrCho14
      @MrCho14 Před 10 měsíci

      We rarely see all the angles that VAR looks at as well. I can't tell you how many times there's something on here presented one way with 90% of the people agreeing only to see Inside Video Review and their angles which proves it wrong. There's no reason why MLS doesn't have access to all those other angles.

      @MrCho14 Před 10 měsíci

      @@adzter96 Regardless of the defender's touch, the attacker does not look offside at the kick point. We don't have anything but the midfield angle, but from that angle I don't think it's in question. VAR would have checked that as part of checking the APP leading up to the PK.

      That was my thought watching the replay as well. Yes, the SKC player deserves his red for retaliating like that. However, the CIN starts the fight with something between a shove and a punch. The refereeing crew should have reviewed the initial shove/punch to decide if it was worthy of a red card.

Second time the officials completely screwed the Revolution out of a result in New Jersey and handed points to the Energy Drinks. The league had to make an apology about the last one, will they even bother to acknowledge this one? Here, of the officials judged that the defender was instinctively reacting to block a pass, then the play will be offside. If they judge that the defender had time, space, and a clear line of sight to make a controlled play for the ball, then the call should be NOT offside.

    The penalty for Tijuana in my opinion probably shouldn’t have happened. If you look closely, the ball looks as if it touched his arm, and he was running for the ball so it most likely wouldn’t be natural position. Although maybe the foul was fully committed milliseconds before the possible handball, or it wasn’t a handball.

    • @andymuenz7499

      Neither penalty in that game was for a handball. Philadelphia's PK was for a push in the back. Tijuana's PK was for the high boot that made contact with the opponent. Both were on the edge of the box so the major question was whether they were inside or outside the box.

      @@MrCho14 First I should briefly mention my credibility: I have been a semi-competitive referee since 2015 and I am the head referee at a large football club in Canada. My apologies for the rant but these are my opinions and interpretations of the highlights. With that being said here's where I disagree with Andrew's perceptions of the rules:
      01:14 the foul did not happen in the box or on the line. Pausing at roughly 01:17 you can see the arm on the attackers back is clearly about 0.5 meters off of the line.
      02:51 since the defender made a genuine attempt to play the ball, the DOGSO call is "Downgraded" to a yellow card, as per the IFAB Laws of the Game page 107. The red card is the wrong decision
      04:51 The NYCFC attacker is considered offside because the second contact on the ball (when two players challenged for it) is inconclusive. Since the player was offside on the initial pass, and the second contact (if any) is inconclusive, the decision is offside. In my opinion the defender made the contact with the ball while under pressure, which in this case would not qualify as a deliberate attempt on the ball with it accidentally going to the goal-scorer. If the defender was uncontested and the ball went backwards accidentally, then I would argue the goal-scorer is onside because the "starting frame" would be reset (the second freeze frame MLS shows at 05:01).
      06:47 I'll give Andrew some credit, the Houston penalty should've never been called. That's clear simulation.
      07:11 this is not a penalty. There is no conclusive evidence that the defender tripped the attacker.
      All in all, I would prefer if someone with credibility narrated this show. Otherwise it's just the same as TV pundits or commentators discussing rules that they don't 100% understand.

      @@JonD00 All good on your credentials. I hung the whistle up a long time ago but continue to try to stay current in my knowledge. I honesty was curious why you think he has no credibility. I agree that he often gets reasoning wrong, but even when Unkel has been on she does as well sometimes. As for the detailed reasons, I think there's a lot of judgment there. I also question your law application of DOGSO.
      For the first one: I see at 1:11 the defender's foot on the PA line, his arm is at least even with that foot and is on the back of the attacker. In the end, it's a judgement call. Andrew decided it was in the area. Still, a judgment call. Personally, I think close enough that VAR probably shouldn't have been involved. (That's without seeing potentially other angles of other contact. This show often does not show all of them. I wouldn't expect PRO to put out an Inside Video Review segment for League Play where we'd see it better.)
      Second (DOGSO): Agree that a play on the ball was made, but it was outside the penalty area. Law 12 states that DOGSO is only 'downgraded' if an attempt to play the ball was made AND it was inside the PA. In all other circumstances.....the player must be sent off.
      NYCFC offside: The call was no offside on the field. Andrew has it mostly correct in that the last touch is what matters. He believes and constructs his story with the belief the attacker flicked that ball on or at least touched it. Given how the call was made on the field, I don't believe there is enough evidence to overturn. The video we are shown here is certainly not clear enough.
      Jumping to the last one, I couldn't tell if that was called a PK on the field, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. If it was, the CR didn't make it an obvious call. That said, if this was not called on the field, then I agree that it is difficult, at best, to say there was a clear error for which VAR should have recommended a review. Andrew gave his opinion the defender did hit the attacker's heal. If that's the case, then a PK is the right call. I'm with you that I don't see anything clear here. As such it's a bad judgment by Andrew but no misapplication of the laws.
      It's funny about getting a real referee to do this. That was done. The comment section felt no better about the conclusions. Andrew is rough in how he explains things which doesn't help his case though.
